I've been golfing for years. Sometimes just going back to the basics helps correct some bad habits I've formed. Your videos have brought me from a 24 handicap to a 12 in the 6 months I've followed you.
@@NickWagers-ln8ec Hi Nick. A handicap is a kind of "rating" that golfers get to say how many shots they are allowed per hole to make their own personal par. Par is the expected number of shots to get the ball in the hole (e.g. a par three hole allows you three shots as standard, a par five allows five shots as standard, and so on). Where handicap comes into it is when a player is allowed an extra shot, or sometimes even two shots, on top of the standard par for the hole. So, for them, a par four hole might actually be rated as a par five (or even a par six). Really good golfers have a low handicap (often a single digit number like a 4 or a 7, say), while golfers who are less skilled might have bigger numbers like 18, 22, 27, 36, etc. The handicap number itself tells you how many extra shots you are allowed over an entire round of 18 holes. Where you are allowed to add these extra shots is based on the difficulty rating of the holes on that specific golf course, which will vary from course to course. So a player with a handicap of, say, 6 will get an extra shot on the six most difficult holes on that course, and the rest of the holes will have to be played as the standard par. The reason for a having handicaps is to allow players of different abilities to compete against each other on a reasonably fair basis. So extending my example above, let's say the 6 handicap player was against a 16 handicapper. The 16 handicapper gets an extra shot, compared to standard par, on the most difficult 16 holes (which includes the 6 holes that the other player gets). But that means the 16 handicapper gets ten extra shots across the round, when compared to the 6 handicap player. The 16 player has an extra shot on ten additional holes, to make up for the difference in skill level. As you get better, your handicap reduces, meaning your extra shot "allowance" reduces. The very best players have a handicap of zero (0), which is known as "scratch" (because you don't write a number, but you just make scratch through the area where you would write your handicap). Scratch golfers get no shot allowance at all, and have to play the whole course as designed. To be a scratch golfer is one of the Holy Grails of golf, and is up there with getting a hole in one. Don't worry about trying to figure out your handicap, though. There are plenty of apps freely available to do that for you, just by entering your scorecard for the course. And it's probably more hassle than it's worth to understand the math of how it works when you're still new to the game. Hope this helps. Hit 'em straight, friend.
Just started playing golf yesterday! Clubs arrived and headed to the driving range. Been watching Ricks videos and have to say they have helped me. I’d never picked up a golf club before and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised at my shots. Thanks for the videos Rick it’s good to see someone as established as yourself still making time to help total amateurs like myself.
Wow thank you. I literally was at Topgolf trying to learn to swing and put this video on after failing miserably my first 20 swings. 5 minutes in to your video and already I was hitting the ball straighter and farther. I've never been interested in golf until now.
I just picked up golfing as a habit in my adult life. I scored a cheap set of used clubs and have no training/coaching in my life. Everything I know (and that’s not much of anything) I’ve learned from your videos. Thank you for taking the time to make these videos that many people would find too basic. They really help people in my boat a lot!
Don't see many comments on here about the editor. If you see this, just want to say a huge well done. The graphics on these videos are phenomenal. Keep up the hard work!
Top lad is Rick Shiels. I met him last year at Delemere Forest. He’s big time on UA-cam yet has time to speak to any level of golfers even giving hints to non golfers as this video proves. Deserves every success this lad. A credit to the game.
Rick I’m a single digit handicapper but I’ve struggled a little bit recently. Getting back to the basics is something I needed, and a video like this came at the perfect time. Thanks!
I'm trying to get my son into golf and this has really helped - I know its a year old but its relevancy is timeless. I'm thankful I don't have to go through the pain barrier of learning again but you never forget the first time you hit the ball well , the sound it makes and the smile it creates.
Been watching Rick for a couple of years, always been in awe and considered starting golf myself... THIS is the video that's turned me. Bought a second-hand fullset and arranged a day out at my local course. Never held a club before but the only way is up!! Thank you Rick!
I love these golf for novices videos because they're a great refresher in fundamentals. They always help me find something that I've lost sight of or some bad habit that may have crept into my swing. A good way to get back on track and rebuild my swing the right way again.
I have been playing on and off since 2007. Sometimes I come back to these videos when I've had a rough game to cool off and get back to the basics until I can get more time to practice and improve. Thanks for such quality content!
Took me weeks to figure out those items when I started almost two years ago. I'm glad you're doing basics. More people should pick up the game of golf.
I’ve been implementing what I’ve learned from your videos over the last couple of months. At first I was fairly frustrated. I stuck with it and today on the course it started to come together for the first time. Instead of struggling against my swing it now feels more natural and makes sense. Thanks man.
Rick I have to tell you I watched your video on strong grip and swinging, I'm hitting my irons now watching your videos it completely changed the next day I went out
New to golf never played never hit a ball, going to the driving range today gonna practise this stuff and hopefully learn how to hit a ball before playing for the first time at the course next weekend
Absolutely stellar instructions Rick. I am a newbie myself, and have been aimlessly going to driving ranges trying to work on my swing, but nothing was working. I could not swing for anything, and I probably hit the ball every 1 out of 10 swings. Like I said before, I had no idea how to swing, foot placement, hand placement, the whole deal. After watching this video a couple times and actually practicing the grip, as well as practicing my swing while you break it down in real time, completely changed my swing for the better. I went to the range after seeing this video and I was CRUSHING balls, more constantly and farther than ever before. You have gained a loyal subscriber. Thank you for the tips!
Finally, after hours of watching YT vids for beginners, this foreigner explains key points from holding the club, address and hitting the fn ball in one short video. Thank you.
I usually watch all of your videos even though I’ve played golf for over 30 years. It’s a great review and I occasionally pick up something that I can use in my game. Great work, Rick! Cheers!
One of your best. I’ve taught lots of folks to play and this is so simple and well diagramed -bravo. I have passed it along to help several beginners I know as primer for the season. Well played 👍🏻
Great video, Rick! I've been at this game (off and on) for 35 years. But it never hurts to get back to the basics. This video reminds me of really what a kind of odd motion the golf swing really is! Like the quote that is attributed to Ben Hogan: "A golf swing is an unnatural thing."
Just watched this video this morning. Been struggling with the irons. I applied this lesson the best I could this afternoon at the range and really did a lot better than I have been. Thank you !
Great video Rick the last one I watched was placing the line on the ball straight towards the target and as a left handed golfer strike the ball to the right of center , I played yesterday and all driver shots were straight and hit solid and I got better distance THANK YOU I will apply this sweep the ball brushing the ground approach when I go to the range or next time I play Thanks again
The golf swing displayed in this video is a captivating performance of fluidity and precision. From the initial backswing to the final follow-through, the golfer's control motivates me to focus on refining my technique. This video serves as a visual guide for enhancing my golfing skills and overall appreciation for the game.
Started a golf lesson today - watching this prior to the lesson gave me a real good idea of what to do - my pro was happy with me and as someone never hitting a golf ball in my life said I was doing good in my first 30 mins just wanted to say thanks Rick. I'm sure I now will get the confidence to go the driving range and practice my swing at home now
Awesome, thanks for the great videos Rick. Thanks for the grip explanation. I've always said a 'standard' grip is just fine, no need to interlock the pinky finger. I've never agreed with people that said you 'have to' do this.
I just started playing a few weeks ago and I couldn't find a good enough video to walk me thru the very basics....until now. Thank you so much for this! This is a favorite video that I think I'll be watching again and again over the years
I'm a bit late to the game....a complete novis and I found this video a great help! Got my first Golf session next week, we'll see how it goes! Thanks for your help, have subscribed! 👍
Getting better after every video! In a week my swing, contact and accuracy have greatly improved. Just need to work more on Driver and 3,4,5 irons. Speed, I need more speed.

Thanks Rick, only been playing a couple of weeks. Your name is always the first to come up when people give me advice. I’ll be trying this out at the range tomorrow 👊
I’ve just begun learning to golf (5 times) and my brother-in-law has been helpful about telling me to just pull it forward and swing it back when it comes to my drive. The idea of sweeping the peg never occurred to me. My thought process was that the tee should not be touched and that I should be solidly making contact with the ball alone. But now that I actually think about it that doesn’t mean that I’m going to end up with the ball in the center of my club. I’m knocking it straight down into the ground. Thanks for the tip, I’ll update after my next time out.
I started playing golf in March just because of Ricks videos started watching his driver and ball tests on Facebook now here I am down the rabbit hole!
Im brand new to golf, just played for the first time at a local golf course, this video is exactly what I’m looking for to improve my swing, I’m hitting too hard and not coordinated and missing the ball or hitting the grass too hard
Great stuff, just picked up a club again after 20+ years it is truly starting over. Great videos, not dry simple engaging, and fun, like hanging out with a friend on the course getting pointers.
This is the best beginner swing video I have seen. I watched a load of "swing for beginners" after my first ever golf lesson and session at the driving range and finally found this one. Really helped consolidate what I was taught and helped my technique when I went back to the range on my own. Great stuff.
This is the worst disconnected arm swing you could teach anyone. Ball contact is the most important thing in golf and you're teaching to aim at a tee peg? Wrong. Better to teach chop down on the ball leading with the bottom L of the club. This leads to better contact with ball and hands turnover naturally through impact, giving a nice draw and give it and follow through.
Love the channel Rick, has helped me a ton over the years. Went from slop golf shooting in the 100's to the low 80's just from following your tips. Keep it up my man!
Young golfer at Quebec are rare and you are the reason as a 25year old golfer starting this year , you motivate me such much to get better goign foward to maybe buying a real set of golf next year Merci beaucoup Richard =D
Rick, I just discovered your videos, they are awesome. My daughter is now golfing in high school and I am learning with her once again. Thank you for sharing.
I’m 46 yrs old never played golf ⛳️ but just this video I learned so much. I got blisters on both hands first time to driving range because I definitely held the club wrong. Instead of using club grip in fingers like the video. I was more in center of my hands just like a baseball bat. I also couldn’t figure out how to get the ball to travel at all. Literally the old guy next to me was driving the ball farther than me and I am 20 years younger. I’m now a subscriber thanks for the video
Super helpful! Heading to Roger Dunn now to pick up accessories because my 13 year old and I enjoy the driving range. Will definitely use these tips to improve our practice. Thank you.
I'm trying to start playing. The idea of unveiling my swing in public is TERRIFYING!!! I actually just watched his Playlist on the the golf swing breakdown very recently (Great instruction! Highly recommended!) His explanation is the easiest to understand but also really gives me what I feel I need to know! Many thanks!
Had my first lesson on tuesday. The coach showed me these exact steps only difference i was only going from the L position not full swing yet. Loved it and cant wait to practise on the driving range. I was feeling it in my sides at the end though.

Young golfer at Quebec are rare and you are the reason as a 25year old golfer starting this year , you motivate me such much to get better
goign foward to maybe buying a real set of golf next year
Merci beaucoup Richard =D
This video is perfect for me. I started out with a secondhand Wood [3], should have bought an iron. I am just starting out, I will be watching you.
This guy is the best at his golf videos and I mean THE BEST.
just sent this to 4 of my mates of have just started playing Thanks Rick!
Rick, I just discovered your videos, they are awesome. My daughter is now golfing in high school and I am learning with her once again. Thank you for sharing.
I started july 2020. Put in a ton of work and used Rick's channel. Shoot 85s on the regular. U da man rick!
I used to play golf A LOT and took a 10 year hiatus but I’m back now and this video was a HUGE help as a refresher course 😅😂
You are the best golf teacher. I watched 20 of different golf swings on youtube, yours are the best!... where do you teach physically?
Super helpful! Heading to Roger Dunn now to pick up accessories because my 13 year old and I enjoy the driving range. Will definitely use these tips to improve our practice. Thank you.
Back to this how love golf since young - 6 May 2023
I'm trying to start playing. The idea of unveiling my swing in public is TERRIFYING!!! I actually just watched his Playlist on the the golf swing breakdown very recently (Great instruction! Highly recommended!) His explanation is the easiest to understand but also really gives me what I feel I need to know! Many thanks!
Thanks pal, going to the driving range for the first time tomorrow here in Leeds - love the videos, keep up the good work
First timer here! Thank you for this video!
Much appreciated from someone absolutely brand new to gold
I'm just about to start on my golfing journey..
These vlogs are great for me as before I had no idea..
I'm so looking for ward to my first ever round
Just started golf and my clubs arrived today.
Going to the range tonight and this helps a lot.
Thanks Rick.
Had my first lesson on tuesday. The coach showed me these exact steps only difference i was only going from the L position not full swing yet.
Loved it and cant wait to practise on the driving range.
I was feeling it in my sides at the end though.
Showing this to my kiddos!!! Thanks Rick!! 🔥🔥🔥🇺🇸🇺🇸
Can you do a vid where you analyse people’s swings that they send in?
Great video, gave the game up 20 years ago but you make me want to start playing again.
