lol what do u mean underrated ? Hes in the Nashville musicians hall of fame, hes just not popular because hes been a play back guitarist and session record artist and isn't the front man or on a cover, but he has worked with lionel richie, Diana Ross, joe carpenter and a plethora of other famous artists because of his skill.
I grew up in Gary Indiana. I lived about 2 miles from where Michael grew up. Other parts of my family lived near them and went to school with his brothers. I LOVE this song and how cool this is to be played by Louie as an instructional video WITH TABS!!!. Thank you so much.
Hard too describe how he plays, so unique and too me quite complex. I am in awe, and then consider the incredible output year after year. A true master.
I just want to say thank you sir. Beautiful Chords you’ve played on that guitar, and yes, you are a pioneer… your Motown guitar ship will forever remain timeless, along with Wilton Felder / James Jameson… May he RIP… May God bless you all.
Hey.. this is a brilliant tan transcription of Louie Shelton’s superb playing… thank you so very much for taking the time and effort of doing this and posting it… very very much appreciated👌👌.. now where’s my pick!!
Love his playing on this Motown gem what an talented guitarist. He could literally play any style for example on The Monkees “Last Train To Clarksville” his playing sounds almost country rock like the later Byrds or early Eagles.
Playing like this is so special; to write something like this is even more special. One thing I wanted to draw special attention to is how his fretboard has worn. C# Minor pentatonic is the only place still fresh, and that is "the pocket", in my opinion. The string tension is absolutely wonderful there; there are so many good songs to shred over. I think it is hilarious that he stayed away from the pocket. That is my favorite spot to lead. C or C# minor, that tension is so perfect there.
I can hear straight away why this man was in such demand. Just listen to the many hits throughout the 70’s & 80’s that must have been influenced and inspired by Mr Shelton’s style. It’s all there in this demonstration.
From the first time I found that it was you , who played this on the recording, I was hoping ,some how, I could get some help, on what I couildn't figure on how to play this... I thank you from the Bottom of my heart... THANK YOU!!! Fantastic guitar work !!!!!!!!!
Simply wow.. There are no words to describe the raw talent you have at your finger tips. I’m from the UK and I can honestly say ( embarrassingly so) I had never heard of you til I began looking for songs I would love to be able to play well one day. I’m in my fifties and have been a fan of Michael Jackson since the Jackson 5. I’m also a big fan of musician/producer Quincy Jones. You are thee best guitarist I’ve have seen. You play effortlessly with great fluidity and ooze passion you have for guitar when playing. Your age doesn’t hinder you at all.and with that you set the bar even higher. I wish I had stumbled across you much earlier in my life, you’ve inspired me already never to give up. I started playing electric guitar about 3 years ago and in all honesty I cannot ever see myself getting to your incredibly insane high standards but I will continue on my journey. Have you ever done a UA-cam video, step by step play through of this song? I’d love to be able to learn to play this.. Take care, Darren
Really Cool. As an Ex-Drummer, I wish that I could have played with you on a stage. You remind me of a lot of really great guitarist that I was lucky to have played with.
Thank you so much for this! I was just about to downlod his original video, bring it to logic and start looping each part until I can get it all. But there is no need for that because of your video. If you don't mind sharing, what software do you use to create these tabs? Thanks
There’s a video that shows his original isolated track, what he’s playing in this video is different from what he did on the original. It’s still great though!
Are you kidding? The man himself showing us how it’s done? Gold. Generous to the hilt. You are a gem, sir. Thanks.
I keep coming back to this video over and over again. This is brilliant. What a master musician.
Thank you for this master class of rhythm, melody, and funk in one great song!!
Louie is so underrated. His style of playing is the very foundation on which all other R&B guitar players aspire to achieve. It's top self.

Embarrassed to admit, but just learning about this dude! thank you for introducing him to me! game changer!
Yep I'm with you. Never heard of the guy either until now.. this is quite a guitar lesson..👍
My same sentiments….thank god for UA-cam!

It’s crazy that he’s 80 years old in this and still plays like in his younger days!
Right there, that's what a legend sounds like--Louie Shelton. WOW!
Goosebumps. What a song, and what a guitarist. Thanks for tabbing.
The great Louis Sheldon one of many memorable guitar tunes he played in the wrecking crew
Sir, I can only confirm that this is 100% pure class, magnificent style and playing. Forever inspired.

Louie is still alive and kickin' (ass)
How in the world....this is a MASTERPIECE.
Incredible, of course. Would love to know how long Louie spent working out what he was going to play prior to the session.
simply beautiful
Imagine all the talent of Mr Shelton, Gordy Berry, and the Jackson's mixed together...no wonder that song grabbed the whole world
I had the biggest grin on my face from 0:00 to 2:57 of this video. 😀

Wow. Absolutely incredible. Knowledge of all those scales and chords with the ability call them at any time needed is remarkable. Excellent video.
Nothing beats experience when you already have the skills. Wow!!!

No way! I just dropped my guitar. This is great! Thank you!

Your style is so nice, such a perfect timing, swing. Amazing tastful playing. I want to learn your style.
Sixth measure 0:24, what on earth is happening there? Such a level of mastery hidden behind vocals all these years. I'm flabergasted.
One of my favorite bass lines ever, but such a cool guitar part too
Love your tabs Petrus, if another Redd tab should happen some day that'd be awesome, thank for this!
Hopefully soon, thanks for the encouragement JW!

Really Cool. As an Ex-Drummer, I wish that I could have played with you on a stage. You remind me of a lot of really great guitarist that I was lucky to have played with.
From the looks of that fretboard, that very well could be the guitar that made those wonderful sounds on the original recording.
Amazing!! Im just surprised he has so much control gripping the pick all the way back.
Il est pas là pour rigoler. TOP LEVEL
