When Cook bought the Establishment, he tried to bring Lenny Bruce (arguably the originator of alternative comedy) over from the US. But the authorities would not let him into the country, because they said he was obscene. So Cook was trail blazer in those days. My favourite Cook moment, was when he was on a chat show with Zsa Zsa Gabor, who said that no artist wanted to paint her. As she was boring the pants off all the other guests, not to mention the audience, Cook pipped in with a very dour quip, I'd like to paint you. The audience fell about laughing because they got it, but Gabor didn't understand why they were laughing. Long live E L Wistey.
Everyone knows the story of how PC, when he inaugurated his comedy club, reminded everyone that comedians were not able through the power of laughter to stop the rise of Hitler to power. To think that this great man, who opposed nazism, is being complimented by Jimmy Carr... the man who thinks a heartwarming Christmas joke is to lament that Hitler didn't wipe out all gypsies off the face of the Earth. And that his audience heartily laughed along to this "joke". Hey, at least Berlin comedians were trying to hurt Hitler's rise to power, they weren't recommending him to the masses. No wonder PC drank himself to death, if this is the truth about the British national character.
It's form the documentary The Comedians' Comedian aired in 2005 on Channel 4 I think. It was about the top 50 comedians. More info (links) in the description under the video. :)
Funny as he was, for me Spike Milligan is #1 by a good distance. Yet Milligan isn't even in their top 10. Milligan, IMO at least, was THE comic genius of the last 100 years. Prolific and utterly changed the whole gamut of comedy; Cleese, who is 2nd on the list, has said on many occasions (as have all the Pythons) that Milligan opened the door for all that followed, them and others. Doesn't have Spike in the top 10? Gives you an idea of how useless their list is.
No, sorry, you're wrong, it's Peter Cook. Maybe you should watch it again, it quite clearly has Peter Cook as number 1 and not as you say, Spike Milligan.
Mali Nicole I assumed it was an attempt at humour or trolling. Otherwise it's just stupidity, and I prefer not to accuse people of that unless they've a proven record of it, lol. Cheers
Excellent. Cook was a genius, easily the greatest comedian to ever have lived.
And the No1 Cunt Kicker in in the world.
Peter cook is the funniest person I've ever seen. It's great that his peers agreed.
And the No1 Cunt Kicker-in in the world.
It's not often I hate someone but Jimmy Carr does it for me.
Me too....why did they choose him...the unfunniest and in the world?
Peter Cook said he was "the No1 Cunt Kicker-in in the world." So there's a joke in there, and maybe even two...
@@adriennethomasvoicechannel1353 That's easy... Contrast.
Cook's football manager Alan Lashley is fucking hilarious.

The greatest Englishman to have lived in my lifetime.

thanks you to the power of 500 for this post.
Does anyone know where I can get a copy of this? I remember watching the list when it was on channel 4 and thought it was dead-on with the ranking.
