  • All you need to make a box with wood hinges is a table saw and of course a little bit of sanding. But you don't need a drill, a scroll saw, a router, a chisel or a dado stack. In this video I show you how you can make wooden hinges with my super simple single blade box joint jig. • Wie stellt man Fingerz...

Without any doubt, the best woodworking video I've seen in a long while. Teriffic idea. I'm going to use this technique for the wooden hinge on a gate leg table with a folding leaf and swing out leg. Thanks for sharing.

Great video, with music to suit inspired work ! Faced with a need, I made one search for Wooden hinges; first clik THIS ! INSPIRED ! That same night I drew an 180 offset version, and the next day I made it in red oak with a mahogany keeper. Thank you Stephan !

I was fascinated with how you "drilled" the long hole accurately for the concealed wire👍in both parts. Very clever way to do that, and hope I can remember for the future sometime.

@@robira1313, at 1:18 he shows a hinge pin in a channel and a strip of wood filling the gap behind the pin. It is not drilled but a perfect hinge channel being made with the table saw. It's brilliant.

That little box was gorgeous and the hinge really set it off. That plain clear finish was the cherry on top! My wife would love a little box like that. You did a fantastic build. Simple, yet elegant! Awesome, just awesome.

I do Stephan. I've used the Incra wooden hinge template for years and it does make beautiful precision hinges. But your technique incorporates the hinge into the very carcass of the box itself. I may change up a few things..........like letting the lid overlap the front a bit to create an easy lift lid. But I will definitely use this method on my next hinged box.
FWIW, I will be sure to send the credit your way. Thanks again.

I'll have to say that's the first time i've seen that technique used to make box joints! Too much math for me, I just make em with a jig and index key. Great video and brilliant problem solving skills!

I like your solution for getting the long hole for the rod. I tried unsuccessfully to drill into the fingers with a long bit but gave up and "cheated" by only drilling the outer three at each end and pinning them. I considered that this would be a strong enough hinge.

Love those hinges. I at first i was wondering 'How did he drill all the way through like that?' Great job!
One question, you created the finger joints then rounded them on a belt sander, would it work as well if you rounded them on a router then created the fingers? I know the focus of the video was only with a table saw, but I am new to wood working and thinking of different skills as I watch and learn.

    •  6 років тому +1

Of course, you can also use a router but for such a small box it is a overkill. It really works great if you sand it round by hand.

Interesting method of finger/box jointing; your own idea of the spacers to advance the blade? Or where did you find it?
How do you determine the DEPTH for your rod slot? Do you find PINE holds up well enough, or is hardwood necessary for hinges on frequently opened boxes?

Thank you for your comment Mark. Yes the spacers are my idea, but maybe it is not new. Here is a video about this Method: ua-cam.com/video/kbgnnsilyxM/v-deo.html. The depth of the rod slot is the half of the thickness of the board plus the thickness of the rod. For small boxes, pine works fine :)

I didn't see it clearly shown, but to keep the rod from the bottom of the slot you used a thin sliver of wood about half the thickness of the board and the same width of the slot that was glued into the slot in both pieces, then the rod was placed on top( temporarily ) of that and another sliver of wood was used to fill up the difference which was sanded down to flush...is this correct? I'm assuming this is so since the rod cannot be at the bottom. I really like this way...it looks so much more elegant and it's all wood. I have started making some small jewelry boxes and other types of small storage boxes with the box joints and having this jointed top will look great with the rest of the box jointed. Oh, I live here in in U.S.A. so I have a dado set that I use for my box joints...sure makes it easy. Thank you very much for sharing this with us, I really appreciate it.

I don't follow you here abotu the sliver of wood; have to re-watch it, but a wooden dowel is plenty strong, so metal rod isn't necessary. Separate individual wooden knuckle joint hinges, using long grain cuts (vs. short grain here) are sufficiently strong too, though a totally different approach. This one-piece (back & hinge unit) is unique.

Thank you for your comment. I don't know if it was all clear. so here is a short explanation:
First I made the slot with my table saw, then I put the rod, which has the same thickness as my table saw blade, in the slot, Then I glued the sliver, which has also the same thickness as my table saw blade in, to close the gap and sanded it down. I hope this helps.

Stephan Pöhnlein oh, the thin strip for the filler you mean, I understood that. I thought the other comment was suggesting some other sliver that I never noticed underneath the rod verses on top of it. I think I follow everything here. Great job.
