Making the Hidden Wood Dowel Hinge Box

- Illustrates all the details of how to make the wood hinge. This is a very unusual piece of joinery that I would love to see you make. The wood hinge is applied to this small box having box joints at all corners.
The unique feature of this box is the wood hinge, yes, the hinge is made of wood. It remains hidden until the box is opened and then disappears again when closed. I learned this method from Rob Cosman, an outstanding Canadian woodworker.
While the wood hinge can be made without this device, Rob's 3/8" jig is very handy: robcosman.com/collections/woo... I also used 1/16" brass tube (could use solid) from K&S Precision Metals, # 8125 www.ksmetals.com

You're welcome. It can be a bit tricky. Make some test cuts to fit the dowel. The one I made in the video was a tiny too far in, and, hence the lid did not open completely.

Thank you for your excellent demonstration . I have played around with wood hinges but generally they are klunky looking and mine don’t fit up well consistently . One aspect of wood hinges is that (for me at least ) I find it necessary to use 3/4 for strength/ clearance . Have you tried the Cosman method on 1/2 or smaller stock ? . I now understand how Cosmans system goes together .
Hi Bill Carson, Thanks for your comment and questions. I have used stock down to 3/8" with a 3/8" dowel. It requires a bit of playing around with the half round bit to get the right position and depth. It's very useful to test cut the side and back scrap pieces and then position a dowel in between and check for a small clearance (I try for 1/32nd) and then rotate the top and make sure you can tilt it back far enough (this checks for depth of cut). If not, then readjust the router bit. Hope this helps?

Drill a 1/16” hole in a3/4” piece of hardwood using a drill press.Now drill a 3/8” hole ,using a Forster bit using. the 1/16” hole to keep you entered about half way thru .I use it all the time and it works perfectly.
@waynetrojan. Thanks for your comment. Have you tried this method to make the hidden hinge? I have used your method and found it works initially, but over time the small hole gets bigger and out of alignment with usage. Hence I switched to the metal hole cutting method.

Jim thank you for checking in, I made about 10 boxes using this hinge method, I was very pleased with the results. If I could I would post some pictures here to show, but not option.

Jim. Speaking only for myself and where I am looking to go with my woodworking. I am wanting to build amazing boxes (keepsake, jewelry, stash)
I have a small shop and learning as I go. So for me my next logical step is going to be, slats, dividers, trays and as I learn those skills I will build more boxes and reinforce the skills I have learned.
I have the dovetails down as I have probably made 50 dovetail boxes over the last year.

Great Video and explanation! You said you would provide a link to which round nose router bit you used in the notes. Also, you mentioned it was a 1/8" round over bit (23:55) but somehow that doesn't add up. How would a 3/8" dowel fit in a 1/4" groove?

Excellent video! Does the Lie-Nielson dowel plate give you a perfect 3/8" dowel? Just wondering.
@jd2150. Yes it does if you choose straight grained wood, which doesn't change the diameter, but reduces tearouts. Thanks for asking!

I built a stationary jig from wood to drill the holes. Not difficult using a drill press

Hi mpephd. Thanks for your question. I would attach a picture that shows this, but UA-cam doesn't make this easy. If you hold your phone vertically (showing the video in the upper 1/3 of the screen), you will see text: "Making the Hidden Wood ....." To the right of this text is a drop down button "v" that you can click on. This brings up the "Description" which i referred to as the "links below". Let me know if you get this. On a desktop, it's much easier.
So, the wooden hinge is actually a brass pin hinge.

Thanks for your careful walk-through. I have to say I cringed when you rounded the dowel at the router table. Such a small piece and trying to hold it to the fence, I pray others will not follow your example and will use appropriate feather boards, push pads or something to protect valuable digits! I enjoyed your explanation otherwise.

James, your hands are way too close to the router bit when making that dowel! That's dangerous.
Tom York Hi Tom and thanks for your comment. You are correct, it was dangerous. Since I made this video, I have become much more carefful. The close proximity can disappear in a mini-second if the dowel is grabbed.

Seems like you would bring up that this is Rob cosmans wooden box hing kit and he is the one that came up with it.... I mean its nice you showing how it comes together and showing how yo do it and set it up... just seems a little disrespectful not to give the credit to rob cosman.

I'm a friend of Rob Cosman and respect his abilities and educational methods. Prior to making this video, I contacted him and asked if he would mind if videos were made about the wood hinge. He encouraged me to do so, stating that really everything is in the public domain, and, I said that I would give him credit and recommend the jigs he has made and sells (see above). No commissions or any remuneration between us has occurred.
