    Russ, thanks for the recommendations (and reasons) to get Part 107 certified. I had gone back and forth about that for 2-3 years, but your reasons here really made sense to me. I'm working through Part 107 training now (though i actually went with Pilot Institute for several reasons), and have scheduled a test appointment for 4 Nov with the testing center (to keep me focused on the goal).

    Thanks for your help, Russ. I've been looking at Drone Pilot School for awhile now, and with the steep discounts offered through Labor Day, they will be gaining a new student soon and it will be great for me to learn new skills soon. I'm retired and looking forward to flying my Mavic Mini 3 Pro recreationally only, but maybe I can offer my services to those less fortunate who need some footage for their businesses. I like the idea of presenting a professional image to anyone approaching. I'll also be subscribing to one of your channel services to get the advantage of those excellent documents and other services you offer. Mostly, I wanted to let you know what an excellent job you are doing for all us less knowledgeable and how much I appreciate your great videos!

      Agree completely on all counts, Russ and @ccourtnier. I too have been looking at becoming a licensed *and professional* drone pilot for some time now, and the Drone Pilot School discount has pushed me to get out of my comfort zone and do this! During the Pandemic, the FAA testing sites were shuttered, so I would have to take my test in an isolated room with zero distractions, and be able to show the online proctor around the room with my laptop's camera... Just not possible in a 4-room 2 bedroom apartment, unless I was sitting on the toilet! Now, post-Pandemic, there's a new testing center only 90 minutes from home... score! I have already prepared a pre-operations checklist, settled on a business name, researched website domains and logo designs, et cetera. Just needed to hear about the latest FAA Remote ID news, and then this discount, to get me to move forward. Thanks again Russ!

      @@aureaphilos..ONLY “90 minutes”? An HOUR and a half..from home. I debated it too, going Part 107..THEN the FAA started pumping out their chest and REQUIRING MORE and more Rules & Regulations beyond Registration,etc. Just got tired of the whole hot mess! ALWAYS a more money, not to mention I ALSO live in a rural area..CENTRAL Texas. Always a drive to get ‘somewhere’ of significance, like a “testing” location. I’ve decide I’m REAL happy being a Recreational/Hobbyist drone pilot!

    Love the content. Keep it coming. My question to the FAA & the sole arguement for non compliance is that when a drone crashes from the sky and hurts somebody because of the added payload, who is going to be liable? If the module is not installed by a manufacurer with proper engineering, why would the consumer be requireed to make the change and accept responsiblity?
    Auto makers are required to do recalls when there are faulty or needed upgrades which are subjet to changes in regulations. Unless the manufacture recalls my drones, not changing a thing. Not worth a lawsuite.

    New mini 3 and mini 3 pro’s are made with RID per a DJI press release. It may not show up on a scanning app right now, but all it takes is an update and then RID is enabled, even if it’s under 249g. One could speculate DJI is manufacturing all new models with RID, regardless of weight, because they foresee RID being expanded to all aircraft

      The Mini 3 Pro I have is actively transmitting as is my Air 2S. The Air 2S wasn't transmitting until the last update. Using an older Android phone and a Karen app, the range is pretty much like Russ described. I flew it back and forth between the north property line and the south property line (650 feet) at various altitudes and stood about 50 feet from the flight path and the detection was pretty much a hit or miss proposition.

    If this is true awesome, I am not ready, and I am sure I am not the only one. However, I thought the FAA had already confirmed that the article that was circulating was fake and the remote id was still on track for Sep 16th. Fingers crossed though, I would definitely love some more time. 100% broadcast modules are way too expensive. There are too few companies making them so demand is outpacing supply, which is also drives up prices as well.

    ARGH! Three weeks ago, I contacted FAA and explained that I could not get a module before the deadline and that the firmware update for my Mavic 2 Pro would not be available until the end of the year. FAA replied saying there would be no delay of implementation or grace period for RID. I sold my M2P and bought a DJI Air3. Oh well, now I am compliant. As for sub 250g drones, they still need to be RID compliant if they are flying commercially.

What should my first or next course of action be? I have done a little research when I first heard about this remote id thing but was under the impression that the new drones come with all the newly required hardware and I wouldn't have to do anything being a recreational flyer. If the range of the transmitted ID data is limited, what’s the point? For ID purposes on sub 0.55LB drones, recreational use, I would think a printed SN or such taped onto the body of the drone would suffice. It would be lightweight, not use power, and would be observable by anyone if the drone got too close. It certainly could be photographed. Thoughts??

    I do think it reasonable to allow individual controlled airspace airports to decide for their airspace as to whether RID or ADSB is a prerequisite to even request LAANC authorization for flight, and basically just drop RID requirement for UAV flight in G class airspace. Then FAA personnel can focus on enforcement where it actually matters, and in the area those FAA personnel are actually in to even be able to enforce such rules.

    • @Shauny_D

    1. Do you recall a time when there was talk about RID requiring a connection to a third party site and a constant streaming of feed? If so what happened to that?
    2. Has the FAA clarified if the data transmitted by the modules that we can't find or afford was going to be your takeoff point or current location?
    Thank you

      I have heard different things about this. I have heard there was a switch, that once turned on, couldn't be turned off. I also heard it was tied to whether you registered the drone and entered the registration info into the drone. I saw a comment on the dii forum supposedly from a dji rep that if you're in the US, it's going to broadcast rid, but in the case of an unregistered drone, it would only broadcast the drone serial number as that all it has, but nothing to tie the drone back to an owner. Are you confirming, from your experience, if you own one, that out of the box, unregistered or not, it's going to broadcast RID?

    I'm not sure it's such a good idea to get the certification. I only have one drone that I don't use for income but I have a lot of RC planes. I understand that if I get certified that I have to register each aircraft, even the recreational RC planes. If I don't get certified, I only need one registration to cover everything. Is this not correct?

    QUESTIONS...Thank you for making drone piloting easier for beginners. I have a Mini 3 Pro and have been practicing for a trip to New Mexico. I have the B4UFLY mobile app and have checked out places where I would like to capture some aerial images. My FIRST question is: Can I rely on the app for accurate information? If it says "Clear for Takeoff", is it really okay to fly there? AND Can I take off and land in an appropriate area but fly over an area that does not allow take offs and landings as long as the drone is in sight?

    I have a question for US 107 pilots. As a Canadian Paraglider pilot, I need a HAGAR endorsement to use a radio capable of monitoring and communicating with airports and aircraft. I'm also a certified drone pilot but not in the advanced category (large commercial drones).Do you need a similar endorsement in the US if you are using a radio for advanced operations?.

    • @justplanefred
      @justplanefred 11 місяців тому

      Are you talking about using a radio to talk to planes and control towers while using your drone? Also what qualifies as advanced operation? Part 107 Remote Pilots can operate up to 55lb drone, above that a waiver is needed. As for operating a communications radio my understanding is any aircraft radio operated outside of an aircraft needs a license to transmit.

    • @flightographist
      @flightographist 11 місяців тому

      @justplanefred I am in Canada. You cannot legally operate vhf or uhf without a license and call sign. Advanced operations are anything in controlled airspace or anything in uncontrolled that involves proximity to people or infrastructure. Microdrones are a different story and legal regime.

    My drone fleet will never be RID compliant. There’s simply no reasonable justification (other than forcing us into FRIAs so that commercial UAVs can fly unhindered BVLOS in the < 400 ft airspace) for me to broadcast my telemetry and my piloting location to the general public. None.

  • @icon134

    I am willing to comply with RID but buying a 150 or more module for a drone that isn't worth much more than the cost of the module doesn't make sense so while I don't have an issue with RID as a concept it doesn't make sense for an older drone.

      The purpose is to allow Amazon and other commercial entities the ability to do drone deliveries and other commercial uses. If the drone broadcasts RID the commercial drone will be able to see it and avoid it. Not the official reason, but my best guess.
