have an old 74 Marantz Model 2324 that I hooked up to Paradigm Atoms. That is the only amp I have ever owned that make those tiny speakers sound big. I personally don't like my gear being too neutral, engaging sound needs character imo.

Thanks for the review. I have owned this Amp connected to a pair KEF iQ5's for 7 years and have no issues what so ever. I agree what you say about the pro's and con's. I have not once thought about upgrading this amp as it does everything i need and it creates a very enjoyable sound stage in my living room. I have noticed that if I was to buy this amp today it would cost nearly twice what I paid in 2017. Seems to be a popular choice.

Great review. I recently purchased a pair of B&W 603 speakers which are matched with the Marantz 5005. Despite various speaker reviews that suggest a more powerful amplifier is required, we have been knocked out by the 5005's performance.

I've got the PM6006, really nice for the price! Lacks a bit of "ompf" though and it's a bit of a bummer that there's no pre-out for attaching a separate power amp. Other than that, it sounds lovely! No matter digital or analogue source. Saving up for the NA6006 (network player) within the same series, design, to complete my setup. Thanks for this review ZF, keep rocking!

    • @quicktoevil
      @quicktoevil Рік тому

I bought the 6006 mainly for the digital inputs and it's aesthetic was appealing for my office. Had no intentions of using in my primary system but thats where it now sits. Drives a pair of Klipsch Klf 20 (no sub) better than I ever imagined. Never thought 45wpc could impress me but this little Marantz is a gem.

I had these driving my Dynaudio DM 3/7, loved them together for 2 years, until I upgraded to Roksan M2, what a difference! the soundstage just got hugely bigger and bass had significantly more weight. They're good for the price, but should be limited to smaller speakers in my opinion.

    • @ZeroFidelity

That's the story with a lot of affordable components. While many components offer a lot of bang for the buck nowadays, you still tend to get better performance as you move up the hi-fi chain. Hell, that's why the chain exists in the first place! Enjoy the music.

I wanted a good integrated amp ( entry level or not) to drive some fairly inefficient speakers. I was leaning in the Marantz 5005 direction anyway before I ever saw this review. The review did it for Me. I have a room that might be on the small side of average size. This amp has good dynamic power also for those demanding peaks.

Another fantastic video Sean! Been looking forward to something from you.
Currently, I have a Rotel ra-1592 in my home on demo. It’s fun to listen to with a lot of features but I’m not totally sure if I’ll keep it.
I’m running it with a pair of 705s2 monitors from Bowers and Wilkins.
I wish I could send this one to you for a review. I may end up with a Simaudio 240i in the end.
Have you had any experience with Rotel???
By the way, I’m currently transitioning away from home theatre receivers and surround sound (still have my Marantz SR 7011). I’m just now discovering how great two channel integrated amplifiers are. I love the simplicity of it. Although, for watching TV and movies it’s a bit of a sacrifice. Centre channel speakers really do make a difference and I kind of miss the ability to set crossover frequencies and manage LFE signals.
    Anyhow, thanks for the video!

I owned both a PM5004 and PM6004 before moving to a PM8004. I found the PM5004 and PM6004 to be very similar, it not identical. Of course, this is before they introduced the onboard dac on the PM6004...(I always kind of thought they added the dac because otherwise they are too similar).
I ended up finding a killer deal on a PM8004 and it's a world of difference. Currently integrated with my AV system (thanks to the Power Amp Direct mode) and powering a pair of Monitor Audio RX8s.

Yes, you are right!I changed my system about 1,5-2 years ago,I listened and tested some models. Marantz 5005 is absolute enrty level, 6005 is better but mids are too highlighted. At the end I choose between 6006 or 7005 and no question I gone for the pm7005, absulute powerful sounding, very good in bass, transparent, not highlighted but perfect mids and clear treble.
      Another level, another world...
Now I thinking about the 8006 but I love "dac in the box" comfort option.

Hi... very informative and balanced review! I'm really tempted to get the PM5005 (here, in India, options are severely limited and import duties are sky-high). I have a question - is it possible to connect a very basic sub with a single input socket (something like the Yamaha NS-SW050) to the PM5005? If yes, how? I've looked at options online, but I can't seem to wrap my head around subwoofer connections in a stereo setup. Sorry for the noob question :(
I'm trying to put together a budget stereo setup to play music from my phone and laptop from. For speakers, I'm considering the Wharfedale Diamond 220s or the Pioneer SP-BS22-LRs (depending on what will sound good with the PM5005).

Ps. My wife has decided to start her audio journey ..into the 'Dark side' (just kidding) of audio, with vinyl. Considering she shares my tastes, which seem to be close to yours (vista spark/T50 combo = warm etc.) Maybe you could recommend a turntable /preamp/ Amp/ speaker combo in 3 segments..beginner..say low budget, mid tier, then psycho (just kidding) budget in mind. Could be fun..I fear going back to vinyl ..may draw me in .. it being the 'Father' of audio. Ok I'm done with the Star Wars references but seriously, consider it? Thanks

Hey Chris. I hate to say it man, but I completely forgot about where I sourced the main power supply (for the amp) from or what the precise specs were. I believe it was either Digi-Key or Parts Express. You'll want to reach out to Lars (Holographic Audio) to get the exact specs. I used to have that info on file, but it's gone now. Marantz PM5005, the amplifier that almost was... I'm new to the channel so I don't know if you have reviewed older vintage Marantz amplifiers but if you have had the pleasure of one... You would know that apart from the internal electronics which Marantz did very well, the solid weighty feel of the knobs are out of this world... You could tell a Marantz amplifier blindfolded just by rotating the volume knob.... These new Marantz amplifiers feel like the volume knob is going to fall off if you breathe a little bit to much into it... Apart from that it's pretty much perfect, Although I think that to appreciate this amplifier properly, it really needs to be connected to a set of 3 way speakers with 15" woofers... Just like you would have done back in the 70's and 80's... I was almost about to purchase this amplifier but like a lot of the amplifiers of that age... The plastic knobs are flimsy and feel like you can easily break them.... Such a shame..

    • @colinmaillard3850
      @colinmaillard3850 5 років тому +2

You're right, the old knobs were far better; you could feel quality comparable to fine zoom lenses. The flimsiness of the new knobs is what struck me when I went to the store, but the PM6005 was half-priced for a 3-day limited offer, so I jumped on the bargain. After 2 years I had to return the unit because the main volume knob and the bass knob were defective. It came back from repair last month (still on warranty for a little while) and all is fine now (I never use the digital input). It is connected to a pair of Technics 3-way speakers with 12" woofers (bought 21 years ago). They make a great match, I could listen to them forever.

Hi, very informative video, pls help if you can. I’ve got b&w606 with yamaha s201 amp. Both at around 100watts. Having maratz 5005, would that increase sound quality over s201? And would it be powerful enough if listening at 90decibel range? Or because of only 40watts per channel and speakers are 100watts each , marantz 5005 wouldn’t handle to much volume and only will play good lets say up to 70decibel volume. Thank you if you can reply 👍👍

How does this Marantz sound compare to the old NAD, not new class D integrateds. Looks like it might be a tad more forward. The 50 x 2 watt NADs did exhibit a bit of weight but are softer up top, IMHO. I have not heard these Marantz.

Hmm. That's a good question. I'd say vintage NAD gear has a slightly smoother, more laid-back presentation . Not necessarily smooth or refined, just less colorful. Both components err to the warm side of neutral, with the PM5005 being punchier than I recall vintage NAD being.

Would you connect an active Sub via high-level (speaker outputs) it will this ruin the sound of the main speakers? Unfortunately the Marantz does not have a designated lfe-output....

i have the pm5005 amp and is at high level input. there are a few problems i encountered but can live with.
      1. when you place your main speakers on speaker a and connect the active sub at speaker b, there is a buzzing sound when the unit is off or on standby
      2. tried to hook it up to speaker a with the my main speakers and the buzzing sound is gone BUT it would not auto power off
      3. tried the rca thru recording out 1 and it works BUT even when the amp if turned off, there is still sound passing thru the rca if the source is on, it will power on. plus its not a preout so volume is controlled at the sub which is annoying to say the least.
now i have to manually turn off the sub ever time since i like high level inputs.
its up to you if these would bother you but for me i can live with it since i turn off everything when im done using it.
with the sound being ruined, i would say no, it does not affect the sound.
      BTW, B&W 607 main speakers and B&W asw608 subwoofer.

With "40w into 8ohms and 55w into 4ohms": Does this mean that the 4ohm will be louder? Or does the difference in ohms and watts cancel out and just produce a little extra heat? Or is there any other advantage\disadvantage between 4 and 8 ohms? Or is it just that the "current feedback" reports the ohms back to the amp, and adjusts power accordingly?

Especially when you consider the marketing + distributor and retailer cuts. Makes you wonder why minimalist European or direct sale brands with much fewer features cost so much more.
