The temples in Cambodia are the best and most magical. At one time, Cambodia dominated Southeast Asia, but now, it's smaller than Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Dumb race? Just because Cambodia is underdevloped in recent decades doesn't mean they're dumb. Historically speaking, Khmers built one of the most advanced civilizations in the history of Asia. Seriously, I'm NOT exaggerating. Here's a list of all the things that Khmer civilization has accomplished, some of which are world-record achievements.
Khmers built the biggest religious structure in the world. Angkor Wat holds the Guinness World Record as the largest religious structure ever constructed in human history. I want you to think of all the Great Pyramids of Egypt. All the giant cathedrals and churches of Europe. All the enormous temples of China, India, and Arabia. Now, realize that not a single of them surpasses Angkor Wat in size.
Khmers built TWO of the biggest pre-industrial water reservoirs ever constructed on the face of the Earth, called the East and West Barays. According to the Smithsonian, the West Baray reservoir is still the hand-built largest reservoir on Earth and is still in use today.
Khmers engineered the single biggest pre-industrial urban city in all of human history, the hydraulic megacity of Angkor. Angkor stretches more than *1,000 square kilometers* and is carefully laid out with a vast and highly sophisticated network of canals, dams, reservoirs, roadways, bridges (speans), and other infrastructure. By comparison, New York City is less than 800 square kilometers today. Additionally, according to the National Geographic, Angkor supported up to a MILLION people at a time when London had thirty-thousand (30,000) inhabitants.
Khmers constructed artificial islands hundreds of years before the Japanese built Wakae island, the first Japanese artificial island. Examples of Khmer artificial islands are the West Mebon, the East Mebon, and Neak Pean.
Khmers developed one of the earliest writing systems in the history of Far East Asia. The Khmer alphabet is so old that it actually predates Kanji and Kana, the first Japanese writing systems (Kanji and Kana were developed in the 8th century, whereas the Khmer alphabet was developed in the 7th century). The Khmer alphabet also predates Hangul, the current Korean writing system (developed in 1443 AD). The Khmer alphabet is still in use today.
When the Japanese and Koreans were building their royal palaces and temples out of wood and bamboo, Khmers were building theirs out of stone.
Khmer high civilization lasted for almost 900 years (the Angkor and Chenla civilzations) and up to 1,300 years if you count Funan. The ONLY other civilization Asia that has historically surpassed the Khmers in terms of development were the Chinese. Not the Japanese. Not the Koreans. Not the Vietnamese.

Making fun of the Khmer people for the genocide they've been through is like making fun of the North Korean people for being killed by their brutal dictatorship. It's like making fun of the Vietnamese people for killing each other in a civil war. It's like making fun of the Chinese people for being killed by Mao Zedong's genocide.
      In other words, it's tasteless.

    • @bluebird5173
      @bluebird5173 5 років тому +2

@Chris Nguyen Khmers built vibrant cities, artificial islands, colossal megastructures, and intricate hydraulic systems long before the Vietnamese even had a basic writing system (Chu Nom). Just saying...

I'm so lucky to have visited Angkor, and Halong Bay. Yet to visit Luang Pabrang, but it is on the list. I do my best to assimilate myself and respect the local cultures and behaviours, I hope I don't get frowned upon when I visit these amazing places. I sincerely hope that these places remain preserved for years to come. Bagan in Myanmar is a place where I worry that things like this will begin to harm the beautiful temples.

The Cambodia government should levy a "tariff" on all businesses that earn from the tourists to Angkor. The hotels around Angkor do not have to do any marketing - the tourists come to them automatically, thanks to the ruins of Angkor. So the hotels and other businesses should pay for the upkeep of Angkor and/or for the damage they cause to Angkor. Also a small tariff must be levied to the tourists, since THEIR presence damages the ruins. Using the collected money, the authorities can protect Angkor better. Also they should decentralize the locations of the hotels etc - they must have all (future) hotels relocate 20 kms away from Angkor and connect that place by 6 lane highway. That way the water table and soil AT Angkor will not be damaged further.

It's sad to see the demise and lootings of the Cambodian/Khmer temples. With the right methods, these temples can recover. The temples of Angkor are ancient glory in stone.

Imagination and sincerity are needed to protect and create revenues from these great monuments, the ancient man has created with his ingenuity.
US has done wonderfully well and has protected and is creating tremendous income for all those who depend on these human created edifices of History.

In 1978 Vietnam invade Cambodia. The Vietnamese army did not withdraw from Cambodia to this present day, they remove their military uniforms and dress a civilians. Cambodian are not in charge in Cambodia. That why you have all the problems in Cambodia. Angkor Wat are, they use the word " manage" by Vietnam.

Also tourism can cause an economy to become dependent on the tourist money which leads focus away from a dynamic economy. International travel can spread disease and is very hard on the environment. Also illegal immigration mostly takes place under the guise of tourism. Now that people can travel easily we are doing it far too often.

Unfortunately they'll eventually have to enforce stricter rules like the Chinese do for the forbidden city. I don't really see that happening though because Cambodia's government cares more about money than anything.

wow... I had visited Angkor in the 1980s and was thinking of coming back for another visit. No Way... watching this video was frightening- way too may humans now. I recall when I was alone walking through Ta Prom, and how my car out to Banteay Srei was overtaken and stopped by a couple of men on a scooter with AK-47s, demanding a bribe for using the road through their territory.

It's not a heritage cursing, if you known history all the five Buddha's all were born in khmer, mostly all a third budha temple's faced to the west. When the French took and Thai over the Cambodia were changed religion, the country was challenged too. Khmer believed budha first before any country's on the planet.
