Greetings from UK. I've been to Malaysia several times but there is definitely no place like Penang. The food is simply amazing, so full of flavors! The people are so united, it really blown my mind away.
Penang is the most lovely place to visit in the whole of Malaysia, kind, gentle, lovely and friendly people, lots of culture and great food!. Balik Pulau is highly recommended, especially the bus journey there & back, passing through so many different landscapes and sights.
I hope this video reminds us the importance of tolerance and we can achieve happiness with multicultural ethnics and religions in such a turbulance time in Malaysia. And street foods and stall foods are importance for our Malaysia identity.
It is very narrow-minded to celebrate multiculturalism at the expense of social mobility. As the video pointed out, these street food sellers have a tough life and a lot of them have been doing the same for generations. If Malaysia's identity was that of poverty, should we not change it? I don't want my children to sell pancakes or chicken rice by the roadside just because it is the nation's identity. I want them to have a better life (unless they really enjoy selling food on the roadside). There is something seriously wrong with society if a rickshaw driver couldn't escape their fate as a rickshaw driver for generations to come.
soonny002 Street vendors here are different although its a tough job the rewards are very high. I've once asked a vendor of a BBQ chicken wings before he said he earns roughly RM5000 a month which is above a lot of malaysians. If everyone thinks like you then there wont be malaysia anymore.
FlamerzZz, I think your comment reflects something more sinister and naive about the culture. If you think RM5,000 is good money, you obviously don't know how much it takes to support a family and give your children quality healthcare and education. That's why vendors have very little social mobility because their children usually end up doing the same job since these families can't afford to send their kids to school/college/universities. Also, street vendors need to evolve before automation becomes rampant. Soon, there won't be a need for human BBQ chicken wing sellers anymore, you get it? That's why it is a bad idea to insist that the nation's identity remain THE SAME! The world is moving forward, Malaysia needs to move forward, street vendors need to move forward as well. Bangkok for example just cracked down on their street vendors because the local people feel it's time to move on. They rather dine in restaurants than on the street. Malaysia isn't going 'DISAPPEAR' without the vendors, you must be stupid to think like that. Malaysia is only going to get poorer but it won't vanish into thin air.
Circe its easy just to talk. You should try FNB for once if you think its easy. Then you'll know how hard it was. Im not saying you will definately fail bcoz you still can make money on this line of you have money. But think about poorer ppl. Its not easy for them. Think from 1 until 10 of their problem. Moving forward? Wait... maybe you think about my question 1st. Who wants to be left behind? No but think about others problem. Not only how do you think. About bangkok. I dont think you should compare bangkok and penang. Look at both population between bangkok and penang. The demand of food or even buying power are way waaaaaaay bigger than penang. So do you think all these penang food seller must upgrade their business to restaurant level? They can but more than 50% or should i say 75% will end up losing money and close down their business.
Penang is a beautiful place, I love to visit and eat lots every time. The Blue Mansion is a wonderful example of how to recycle heritage buildings too. Definitely one of my favorite destinations anywhere!
Penang is definitely beautiful and known as one of the best cities in Asia. What steals our attention is the plethora of food the city has to offer. Its juz an island but offers the tastiest food ever...no other cities have pleased me as much as Penang.
Bangkok is a big city so it's hard for it not to get globalised. You could probably compare Bangkok Kuala Lumpur. Penang is probably more like Chiang Mai.
Mei wong, Why are you so confused, plus those who has clicked "like". Malaysia is a multi culture society, compared to Thailand, Indonesia, majority of the people are mainly of one race. They do have Chinese and Indian but their population is same in proportion in comparison to Malaysia 😂😂😂
@Kamwai Chan Maybe there are people who feel the same that’s why they agree. Personally I do like the documentary as well but as a news/documentary content, isn't it best to depict the subject or topic as accurately as possible? So as to say, will I hear indian music or instruments in a chinese temple?
Gurney drive is a tourist trap. Small tips: Char Kuey Teow - Ah Leng (Air Itam has night session with less people), Pasembur or Indian rojak - Jelutong morning market thats beside kfc.
Fascinating! And the street food culture of Penang and larger Malaysia is definitely vibrant and a national treasure that is greatly appreciated by the global community!🔥

Penang are such a heaven place for multi culture street food. My last visit there was awesome! real heritage of the mix chinese malayu & indian culture with an add of some other countries. I think Popular place like Penang Bistro restaurant was inspired by this. Even Malaysian friend of mine said if you cross the strait, they have the same menu, same restaurant brand, but taste different. Even not every food place there are tasty, but always offer a new story.
My birthplace @ Ross Road (general hospital/Padang Polo Secondary School and the bleurgh dental treatment. The dental nurse reeked of corn and i felt like i had a lock jaw throughout the drilling, tears just rolled down my cheeks, yeah like the removal of my birthmark as the Dr didn't test if the numbness kicked in. Ouch
Just for sharing, Due to advantages of our Malaysian gst and sst charges, Most of food vendors took this opportunity to earn better income and only middle and below income earner suffer. Food vendors earned very good income more than average income earner, even foreigner like Pakistan, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Vietnam, Thailand, India are into food business. It is because many of them don't declare income tax or don't know how that is why they don't buy big cars or houses but please take note that some of them does, you will see them owned high properties even buy properties in their home countries or able to send their children to international school and even overseas to further their studies. Just take your time to look around and calculate their daily profits you will be surprised. Some example street vendors like selling nasi kandar, nasi lemak, hokkien mee, satay, chicken rice, roti canai and many more they really really earned good income... Tq
sadly, recent immigrants in the form of refugees from other parts of Southeast Asia can not benefit as did the immigrant ancestors of people who are today's Malaysians ~
Pedrosa's accent is so distracting, like a weird mix of British, mid-Atlantic, and Visayan. She must have worked really hard to acquire something that ridiculous.
Why did it say "meat is slaughtered"? Tell it as it is - animals are slaughtered! If people feel bad hearing about animals being slaughtered for meat that they absolutely don't need to eat, they should not eat it. Don't water it down!
The opening statements is filled with BS, and unexamined assumptions. Food culture is not always an indication of the cultural surroundings. Everyone in Malaysia communicates an English, and a third of the population is Muslim. British and Islam are the biggest influencers on the Malaysian Island. Yet the presenter failed to point that out the travesty. Food does not always represent cultural influence. Rather it is only a convenience.
Man, you dubbed Chinese uncles with Indian English, then there’s the terrible translation from hokkien to English and you showed Chinese temples with a kind of ‘Indian / middle eastern music’ background. This is a terrible terrible production.

This representation of the Immigrant story is misleading. If someone were truly financially successful, why should they still be working at the age of 84? And why should someone need to work over 40 hours a week, when they should be spending time with their off days. Where is the quality of life? This work ethic is purely BS, because they're certainly not working smart just working hard like a slave.
