That desk top is not meant to be supported by just the corners. It is intended to go on a matching frame with a steel spine going over the center that keep the top stable. That's what the predrilled holes are for.
@@lupo.420 I guess I can see that if this is the first time you have seen him. He’s the classic Prima Dona creative perfectionist, but he doesn’t have a Mac or wear turtlenecks. I’d love to see a Taran and Dennis podcast. It would be a beautiful disaster.
I haven’t been an LMG fan as long as some of you, but this has become my favourite series. I genuinely love seeing Linus interact with the team in a less scripted environment.
I love that he bought an IKEA desktop, but didn't get the corresponding frame for the desk, and doesn't like how unstable it is. I have that desk, with the correct frame, and I have two 34" ultrawides, a laptop, docking station, and xlr mic with boom arm all on the desk, and it doesn't wobble in the least.
Agree that it should be quite obvious that the plate on its own is not sturdy.... But I would also not be surprised if Taran had a very particular reason for not using the frame. Like that the frame blocks his armrests or he wanted to recycle the legs. He also said that it was temporary and whatever he said the next thing was going to be, it sounded more sturdy.
True. I just build mine yesterday and the top is some wobbly shit in it self. Hey btw. How is the top handling the boom arm mount etc? I’m afraid mine will make a mark when fully extended and what about adding a monitor arm? 🤔
@@fi5ke Not sure what table it was, if it was a bekant, there are no issues with any marks of mounts. I have had dual screens on an arm that is fit to the rim of the table for many years. You see nothing.

20:38 Teran, I use the same desktop as you and it's rock-solid. The reason why yours' bouncing and unstable is because you don't use the right stand to give maximum support to the top. If you use IKEA's accompanying 'Bekant' stand (which is in the same series of the top), there's will be more support in the centre and the whole desk can hold up to 100kg. There will also be a nice net underneath to hold cables. It's not that IKEA product sucks; it's sometimes people don't assemble it according to the designer's thought (though they try to milk from you for sure).
@@FranciscoOyola94 No, it's not DLC. They have 'series', where different parts or items are designed to go best together under the same design language. Teran picked the Bekant office desktop, but he didn't pick the Bekant stand which has metal support across the centre. You can see in the video there's already pre-drilled holes in the back of that desktop. Those are for the matching stand and cable management.
@@accidentian Yeah, I'm literally typing this at work with my computer on an IKEA desk. I thought I had outsmarted them by buying a Trotten table top with Adils legs but it turns out that I was just dumb. The desk isn't meant to be drilled the way I did, and while moving the desk two of the legs almost came out. These are the exact same legs that he had there, so he probably had the same thought process as me.
@@accidentian I also have the Bekant and while yes, it's rock solid in the middle, it also transfers vibrations way too much. My monitors wobble when i type too hard.
@@meeuyou I mean you can outsmart IKEA to not be ripped off, but you can't outsmart physics. So in yours and Teran's case, at least some solid-enough metal bars should be crossed and fused together, and be put between the legs and the top. This way the centre pressure on the top will be better passed to the legs -- which is exactly what the matching stands does.
The IKEA bekant tabletop is actually supposed to be used with a metal frame. I am not sure why they sell it separately but with the metal frame it is very sturdy and also has wire management.
There is even a video on YT where someone tests how much weight they can handle with 5 legs. By the end of the video he basicly jumps around on it and nothing happens. He has to do a full on bodyslam to break it.
20:45 Right click on your .exe > Properties > 'Compatibility' tab > Change High DPI settings > Tick 'Override high DPI scaling behavior', and finally chose 'System (Enhanced)' in the 'Scaling performed by:' dropdown menu. @Taran Van Hemert 100% scaling or bust. Also I miss my old Dell 30" 16x10 but remember the heat. Upgraded to dual 32" one 4k and the other 1440p 144hz. One for work one for play
I'm confused about the scaling issue here, can someone explain? Are there specific apps you guys use that need scaled up on a smaller screen that I wouldn't be using or is it the windows UI elements that you feel need scaled up? I just run 100% scaling and my main monitor is a 27" and nothing feels too small and even doing things on my secondary 22" monitor feels perfectly operable. I guess I have a zoom applied to a couple web pages, but only ones I also operate from my bed on the other side of the room... Oh wait it's probably that my monitors are 1080, if I had a 4k monitor at 100% scale at this size I guess that would be a problem, but I think 1440p on my main would probably come out close to 1080 on the 22" secondary... I dunno.
@@AmaraTheBarbarian You are correct if you have 4k monitor that's only 27 inches there will be 4 times as many pixels per inch compared to 1080p. But the problem with the higher dpi is windows icons, menus, user interfaces will be much smaller because they are based on pixels(generally) . To make text readable and icons use able windows let's you go over 100% scaling, but not everything scales well. Some of it is just a windows problem, sometimes it's the program. My 32" 4k is right on the edge and the icons are still too small for my wife to see. Hope this helps
@Taran Van Hemert 100% agree. It doesn't fix every program, and its usually a tossup- especially ones that run Qt, which is notoriously wonk with UI scaling
Thanks m8 I realized the problem towards the end of typing the comment, problem is I didn't think about monitors being greater than 1080p. It may sound odd but I've never seen a 4k monitor actually running, and that's coming from someone who's worked in 2 electronics stores and been a lead in one. @@beefwantko7269 by that same logic you wouldn’t believe that video either. It was acted for the camera just like the April fools video where they said Linus didn’t know anything about computers.
Taran quit, so this video shows how departure was imminent
@@Electrodexify oh damn, that kinda sucks... did he quit or did he get fired?

@@alexanderzsilco7506 He says he quit. Though in the comments in this video, he says he broke up with his GF, but on the saying good buy he said, he's moving because he's getting married?
Well, linus was nice to him, to the point of giving him his own room for editing, while the other editors worked in cubicles. So in a way Taran's ego got inflated and his abrasive personality as show here in the video, got the best of him.
Taran is that one arcane wizard that every company invariably has, where his methods are senseless, his processes are inane, and his choices are inconceivable, and yet the whole place falls apart without him.
Exactly!!!
He's my favorite of the LTT Elders
It's called engineering job security from the ground up, making you invaluable because everything you've built is incomprehensible to anyone else.
I had someone exactly like that at my previous job, and it was great... And yeah, the place did kinda fall apart when he left
That is so true!
It is sad this is Taran's last LTT video. I will miss him, and we will miss his particular editing style. I was hoping he would have one more good robotics/bike video or something. I liked him as a video host!

It's both hilarious and endearing how all the longest serving employees at LTT treat Linus like a close friend. Trash talking him, throwing stuff at him etc...
They grew with him, so it definitely makes sense. They all worked for this company's prosperity
This guy was there at the start of it all. If Linus didn't like him, he wouldn't have brought Taran onboard.

I have that desk, with the correct frame, and I have two 34" ultrawides, a laptop, docking station, and xlr mic with boom arm all on the desk, and it doesn't wobble in the least.
Yeah it's the frame that gives it all of it's strength. Like somehow it seems to me that people just don't get how structures work.

The beading edge is real!
Wait, so IKEA has DLC?
Taran: “I don’t like being on the bleeding edge”. Taran 5 seconds later: “I cut my thumb a little bit”
The PC gods have received their blood sacrifice.
8:27 THE LITTLE MASK OH ITS SO CUTEEEEEE
The IKEA bekant tabletop is actually supposed to be used with a metal frame. I am not sure why they sell it separately but with the metal frame it is very sturdy and also has wire management.
It says on the website
The smiley desks are actually cardboard inside. They all need either a 5th leg or put it on a desk frame with a crossbar.
They sell desktops and frames separately to provide combinations of colors and motorized option as well
There is even a video on YT where someone tests how much weight they can handle with 5 legs. By the end of the video he basicly jumps around on it and nothing happens. He has to do a full on bodyslam to break it.

Not the most intuitive way of fixing that issue, but still cheaper than changing your whole rig...
Problem is even if you work in a big name store if it's in a small town they just send you some very average stuff, every day for 5 years between the 2 of em I got up went to work and looked at the same row of 1080p monitors, with the same table of 10-20 laptops depending on the store that all had 1080p screens, half of which with the same specs, i5 of the current generation, with 8gb of RAM, and a 1tb hard drive towards the beginning and a 256gb ssd after that. And why would you need it to be water resistant? I would be more worried getting water on my keyboard, mouse and/or monitor than the desk
i use two ikea drawer shelfs and a laminated 8.2 Glass sheet.

I love the way Linus interacts with all his employees. It feels so personal and the whole team looks so cohesive and well integrated!
These intel extreme upgrades are my absolute favourites on youtube. Always looking forward to them. Keep em coming LTT!
You can really tell how special Taran is to the team, linus just gets him whatever TF he wants, lol.
He's earned it to be so particular about everything.
I admire Taran because at first glance from this video he seems annoying asl but it's clear he's a solid link in the chain that is LMG so he's clearly doing at least a few things right.
yeah he’s special alright
"You can run them in a lower resolution."
Linus dies inside.
I love how visibly uncomfortable Linus is at the beginning lol
Someone who wanted things blurred to that extent probably made it very clear that she didn't really want them there at all.
@@rebmcr this kinda reminds of the Tarantino scene in Pulp Fiction...
"Do you see a sign outside my house that says 'dead pc components storage'"

I feel like Taran’s brain works at 10x the speed his mouth is able to put those thoughts into words
Some parts ;)
As someone who has a brain that works similar to his, I can confirm that this is correct 😅
Relatable, I have the same problem even with typing, I 'm making a ton of typos on large texts :) And my pronunciation is even worse cause every other part except the brain, including the mouth, is lazy af
I have the same problem. ugh so annoying when u're so smart. I think too fast and my body just cant keep up I relate to that ugh my brain too quick. Did I mention that my brain is so quick? I'm smart btw, ugh I relate to this btw. Yea when you're typing and you make typos ugh always happens because my brain is so incredibly large 😅😅😅I'm humble about it ahaha look btw I'm better than other people
I think this accurately explains myself and many others in the tech world.
Taran have been working with Linus since the early days. Its likely that Linus rescheduled to ensure he gets his upgrade before he left, which he totally deserves anyway.
Not sure why some are complaining here.
I love that Taran is so unapologetically himself through this whole video. From blurring EVERYTHING to throwing the “fluffy” at Linus, he don’t care lmao
"why is [the downloading file] so huge?"
taran over here with the linux mindset - "I shouldn't need faster internet, they shouldn't be making their files so massive"
for the record, I'm a linux person: this isn't a criticism, it's congratulations
It's so true though! Nvidia's garbage is close to 1 gig nowadays. I mean...wtf?
@@bhavikpatel4817 truth. 512.15 was the last driver i downloaded. 805mb. completely unnecessary. they really need to sort it out. stop bundling useless stuff like geforce experience, people can get that separately if they want it.
I'm surprised Linus didn't notice the absolutely craptacular TP-Link router/wi-fi sitting on top of the old computer. It didn't surprise me at all that Taran only has a 50 Mbps connection (interestingly enough, that is considered quite good by Australian standards)
@@iris4547 I actually like Geforce Experience since I never have to remember(and subsequently forget) to check my video drivers and see if they need to be updated; Plus im willng to bet that the drivers would be a lot slower to download if you just downloaded from your browser than with Geforce Experience
The frame that is meant to be used with that top spans the width of the top providing structural support. Using those legs at the 4 corners is not going to last long. All that sweet tech is going to end up on the floor once that desk top gives out.
This is so wholesome to watch. It’s clear Linus and Tarun have known each other for years and have a deep mutual respect, despite being quite different people.
