I think the seasonality of Japan, and its cultural consciousness of seasonality reflected in food and style, is a large part of what draws people to Japan. It could be very easy to visit Japan, do the Golden Route and think you've seen "the most important" parts of Japan. "Forcing" people to see Japan, while still as a vacation, closer to how Japan is experienced and enjoyed living there I feel is an amazing way to encourage people to want to explore Japan and visit multiple times, rather than a hit-list a few cities and instagram the same monuments as everyone else. I love your love of a thing that I love 😂 Amazing video as always Ry Some of the most beautiful shots and stills
Thank you so much Ben, really appreciate your comment and feedback. I totally agree, and that's why I'm glad some of my videos can perhaps help people decide on a couple locations off the Golden Route!

Bro I enjoy your vids so much, I've been to Japan 4 times and plan on moving there within the next 5 years. Your videos highlight all the things I love about Japan. Thank you so much!
Thanks so much man, means the world to me, especially coming from a fellow Japan connoisseur! Stoked to hear that you're going to take the leap and move here!
Thank you for posting your vlog of your travel that is not on the Golden Route. I have always felt it is unfortunate that all foreign tourists who come to Japan only visit the same places. As a Japanese, I would like to strongly emphasise that our country offers wonderful sightseeing in all around the country, no matter where you go.
Absolutely, I have always felt that it's a shame as well. I have learned in my year and a half of living here that there is so much beyond Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka, and it has become my goal to experience that side of Japan and document it so others can learn about it too.
Excellent, gorgeous video. I am glad to meet your channel. Your family is so sweet, God bless them. I'm planning a 90 days bikepacking odyssey from North to South of Japan between next August and November. Your footage style amazing.I'm sure this channel helps me a lot for my touring. Can't wait for the next chapter. Greetings from Istanbul.
What a great video, ma man! The composition, colors, music, and focus shifts…all perfect! Thank you for letting me join your family on this trip through your video! And boys will always be boys😂
Nice video! My family came visit last year and we also skipped the golden route. I took them to Okayama-Kagawa-Ehime (via Naoshima) and they absolutely loved it. Looking forward to new videos/updates!
Thank you so much! Ah that's an even more unique itinerary, must've been a great time! For their second visit I'll make sure to bring them somewhere even more remote haha
How wonderful to share Japan with your family! We’ve visited 26 of japans prefectures and your itinerary is top notch! We recently visited Togakushi for the 3rd time and when it’s all snowy is perfection! Many don’t hike to the end but we do and it’s just stunning!
Wow you're over halfway to seeing all of them! Totally agree, Togakushi was magical in the snow, and the crowds thin out the farther you go haha. Glad to hear my itinerary was a good from an expert 😳
Awesome Ryan. So glad your family was able to visit you. Not the typical golden route, plus travel can be challenging in Japan around New Years holiday. Looking forward to the next one!
Actually I grew up in Nagano and now living in far from there. Appreciate sharing all the spots that I would recommend to people. Nagano is famous for more unique onsen through north to south. Also snow shoe hike at Togakushi area would be recommended late winter such as Feb to Mar. Have a nice and safe trip! Cheers!
YOU! How fortunate they are to have The Man, as their tour guide! Now, put them to work doing B-roll and retrieving cameras from back up the hill... Oh, and your Mom is LOVELY!
Hahaha my brothers did help carry a couple things (reluctantly 😂). Thank you Roland, I will make sure to pass on the compliment to my mom, though she has been checking the comments hereself haha
Gujo City is famous for its traditional Bon Odori dancing throughout the night, and definitely has good tourist resources, but as a small town in the mountains, I am concerned that the influx of tourists will exceed its capacity. If you, the commenters and viewers, are interested in Gujo City, I hope you will enjoy the beautiful city with respect for the fact that the beauty of Gujo City is maintained by the efforts of its people.
Well said. I take my role as a creator seriously, and understand that I can have an impact on these more rural areas. I will be sure to convey that message throughout some of my future videos. Thank you for this comment.
One of the best location in the world I have ever been was found! It’s Togakushi shrine. Please come back there again in summer not winter, al of you can meet the quite different atmosphere and scenery !
It's not very well known to tourists so I highly recommend! A local was even saying it's rare to see gaijin up there, they didn't know I understood Japanese though haha. Last time I went I rode a rental bike up there, but after a quick google maps search it appears there is a bus too!
Another beautiful and peacefull video, never heard of Gujo and I absolutly want to visit this very japanese spirited village. I'm glad you could spend new years in Japan with your family it's one of the best times to be in Japan. Also I wanted to share with you another youtube content creator named "maigomika" they live in abandoned house somewhere in Japan they're both canadian if you are ever interested.
Thank you so much for the feedback. I hope you do get to visit it :) And thank you for the suggestion, I just strted watching one of their videos and already love the vibes! Hope I can meet them one day.
I am super glad to find this video! I am Japanese originally from Matsumoto, living in Yokohama. Four of my friends from the US are visiting Japan in March. They want to ski, see snow monkeys and visit Zenkoji and Matsumoto jo castle! I am planning itinerary for them now. Wow! What a great example. In Matsumoto, please tell me the name of the restaurant you had SANZOKUYAKI. I wanna take my friends there!
What a coincidence, that sounds like a very similar itinerary haha! Unfortunately because it was the weekend before New Year's the restaurants were SO busy in Matsumoto and they only accepted reservations, so we got sanzokuyaki the next day in Obuse instead. There are a ton of restaurants in Matsumoto that offer it as long as you can get a seat. I swear half the restaurants have 山賊焼 written on a sign outside haha. In case you're interested in the Obuse one though, it's called 小布施 寄り付き料理 蔵部.
Nice to meet you. I also love traveling and came here from a recommendation. It's been a while since I last saw such a nice and fun video. Thank you for coming to Japan ..🇯🇵🫶
Great vids as always Ryan! Japan is so iconic and amazing place for videography and travel. Do you use tripod for those static shot or was it stabilized in post editing?
@@DTCampingAdventures thank you so much!! Happy New Year! You've outdone yourself with all of your artistic photography/videography with some fun family reunion moments! How much time would you recommend for the first time traveller to Japan?
Happy new year, and thank you! Haha very hard question but 10 days absolute minimum. As you can see, we were on the move practically every day and managed to see only a few places, so do longer if you can afford it :)

The area of Togakushi Shrine shown in the video is now open to the public, but in the past it was a sacred area that only Shugendo practitioners could enter, and the mountain itself was an object of worship. Times have changed, but today the area beyond the Suishinmon Gate is considered a particularly solemn area. Please respect the traditions and history that have been passed down through the generations, without judging the comments based on whether they are fun or not.
Which month was it when was snowing?
Happy New Year! You've outdone yourself with all of your artistic photography/videography with some fun family reunion moments! How much time would you recommend for the first time traveller to Japan?
Happy new year, and thank you! Haha very hard question but 10 days absolute minimum. As you can see, we were on the move practically every day and managed to see only a few places, so do longer if you can afford it :)
