I turned my formal dining room into a craft room. We never used it as a dining room. So after 7 years of eating in it one day of the year (guess which day), I finally sold the table and chairs and put together my craft room. Best decision ever.
This is such a great idea more people need to do this. Why keep an entire room for just 1 day a year. We did this with our guest room. We have lived here 20+ years and no one uses it. Once every four years is not a reason to keep the room, so it became my craft room and I use it everyday. I have an air mattress for the once every 4 year visits :-). Yes you will have to sleep in my craft room, but it's pretty and cheaper than a hotel, lol.
When I first started watching UA-cam to learn how to uss my Cricut I was seeing all those amazing craft rooms with their fancy fold out shelving units. I happened to catch one of Lindsay in the Room of Hoard and I have been following ever since. I was so thrilled to find someone who was rigging a basement with finds to create her own space. Genius!
I love the room of hoard! Especially the name 😄 I have to admit that I have adopted it, because hoarding art supplies is my weak spot 🙈

Having my own space has skyrocketed my creating. It's half if a bedroom, the other half is my husbands. The best part is that no one is allowed to touch anything without my permission. This means it stays tidy when I want it to be tidy. It's amazing 😄 I like that your space isn't Instagram perfect. Though I do like those spaces too. It shows who you are. We don't really have basements in the Netherlands, but it's nice to have insight into other countries ways of living.
If only all houses had basements!
It's practical in a cold climate as long as it's not prone to flooding. Im surpised they are not common there. U think they are becoming less commen here because they ate more expensive than building on a pad and cement is such a driver if climate change they probably want to use less.

Thanks for the realness of of this content. I think many of us obsess over the beautiful craft rooms we see online that aren’t always practical because of the “wasted” space on the walls or shelves used for decoration and not supplies.
I think this video has things for everyone! And if having units in all colors bothers someone, they can just paint them all the same color. HUGE difference! Thank you, love how useful the overhead joists can be.
During lockdown we converted a basement storage room into a craft room! I love having all my hoard in 1 place (sold all the outgrown and unused kids things to make space …now is a good time leading up to Christmas….and used the $ to out fit my new space with a desk and sewing machine cabinet. For the cold cement floor put down foam interlocking exercise tiles from walmart plus a space heater. Shop lights and now everyone follows me in there…don’t have a solution for that yet other than classical music. Thanks for being real!

Living alone, I have taken over my dining area of the kitchen. I have an adjustable table set at standing height where I do most of my creating. If I want to sit, there's the kitchen table. I have another table set up on an opposite wall with my Big Shot and my old Cricut. Storage is all in my adjacent laundry room. I had this all set up in an empty bedroom upstairs for a while, but didn't like being up there and alone in the house. My basement would never be usable for a studio. The house is over 100 yrs and has a cellar carved out of undersurface limestone. All that's down there is furnace, water heater, cobwebs and yuck!! Access to it is only from a stairway outside. But I love what I do, so if I have guests in for a meal, I clear my table if there's crafty stuff there, and proceed! Sorry this is long. Lol!

Great video, giving me ideas. I actually have an unused room upstairs, used to belong to my cats (yeah...I know) but they've both passed away and I was starting to just junk it up. If I add some shelves and a desk and clear out the clutter, I could have a genuine studio.

No judgement, our cat had her own room too. Now she shares with my husbands gaming stuff.
We took a windowless basement room and turned it into a studio. We spent the $$ to put in dual exhaust fans for when I want to do some spraying. I agree it can feel isolating and cool. I have a space heater as needed and a bluetooth speaker to help with these things. And I share with my hubby! Yes, I do wish for a lovely main floor space with windows. But I'm happy with what I do have.
No basement here (below sea level), but I have a spare bedroom where I can close the door to the mess inside. The furniture is an old bedroom dresser, armoire, bookcase and a small wooden kitchen table and chairs. They all match and I was happy to repurpose them. Nothing fancy though. I need to clean up in there because craft supplies have seeped into other rooms of the house (I think they're breeding in that room!). I enjoyed the video and the walk down memory lane into the room of hoard! That's where you filmed for the first few years I watched, and I continue to be amazed at your space and organization! 😊 Enjoy the weekend! Janet 💕

I am very blessed to have my own space. My husband had a music studio he no longer used. It is a large building on our property. I now use it for my craft studio slash canning holiday sewing storage. I love it. I can walk away from it and leave things where they are. And it's also a great place to get away!! I can listen to the radio and it doesn't bother anyone. I love it ❤️!!
The best investments you can make are into things for yourself and your own mental health. I started on a desk in my bedroom and quickly expanded. I’ve been a maker my whole life. My room is still in boxes from our move 2 weeks ago. It’s overwhelming because it’s a much smaller space, but I’m hoping with the walk-in closet I’m able to figure it out. I don’t like working on things around the house when my husband is home. I was off today, but he got home around 11am. UGH! Guess I’ll try again next Friday. 🤦🏼♀️
I like having a guilt-free table for art. I paint and draw more often, definitely. I bought a hard rock maple vintage table at Goodwill for $5, parked it in my sunny living room, and I don’t care if it looks messy. Life’s too short to be perfectly neat. 😂
Did the save last year. I turned my dining room into an art studio and connected livingroom into a music studio. I have another room for TV, or a few friends over.
I love peeking around behind the camera. ❤ I use our spare small bedroom as an office. Just enough room for a large desk and a shelf. The bookcases are in the closet. Just open the doors and the room looks larger. I use to write for a living so I needed a quiet workable space. Now I have all my pencil and marker sets there so all the pretty decorations had to be put away to make room for what I do now.

I live alone in a 1 bedroom apartment. My whole place is my studio! But it's for fun, not work.

@@grandmanette9503 - If I was going to build one, I'd use 1X2 lumber for the shelf and some decorative wooden trim for a "lip" to keep the stamps from falling off.
Thanks for another great video! I know I’m biased because i craft in the corner of my basement lol…. I remember the days of crafting at the kitchen table, and having to clear everything away before the kids got home from school ready for a snack!
I was so excited to eventually carve out a space for myself in the basement a few years ago. Even though our kids have been grown and gone for some time now, I love my space and I’m not moving! I’ve taken so much inspiration from you over the years to put my space together. Repurposed furniture when possible, removed the lids from my iris containers to create drawers (genius), mini ink storage in acrylic box frames, and so much more! Thanks for all the useful suggestions! I love my little crafty corner😃. I do a craft room tour about once a year (as you know craft rooms are ever evolving), and I always try to remember to thank you! It doesn’t have to be an all white matching room for it to be a functional and happy space 😃😃😃Embrace your space!
What a great idea on the iris boxes for drawers! What kind of frame do you have them in, and did you put drawer supports in it somehow? I once saw a crafty UA-camr using some kind of purchased unit that had the Iris boxes with their lids intact. I’ve never seen them for sale though, and I’m sure they’d be pricy! I use these boxes for themed crafting kits. For example, one box holds all of my stamp carving materials, and another holds 1/4” fun foam plus various cut out foam shapes to make templates for stamping backgrounds or for using on the gelli plate. It’s kind of hard to access them in a stack though; maybe you’ve figured out a way to DIY a better system? Do tell, please!
My craft room is half of our basement. LOVE it. I am down here everyday. It is my HAPPY PLACE!

I’ll have to post a photo of my trunk with paint dab motif that serves as a coffee table and art supply storage in my Airstream in the Facebook group. I have a craft mat on the dinette table to use as a craft area. Plan on modifying the dinette to a desk in the future. Can’t do away with the jackknife sofa - gotta have a place for the grandchildren to sleep 💤 when they spend the night and when I take them with me during school breaks😊

Thank you Lindsay for a peek into the Room of Hoard! I am lucky that when we bought our house, my hubby wanted me to use a bedroom for my craft room. It has evolved over the years as I moved from sewing to different paper crafting (cards, scrapbooking, back to cards, junk journals, etc.) I discovered a few months ago that having everything out where I could see it was really distracting, so I started improvising ways to 'hide' the clutter, like putting paper in the front of the drawers of plastic bins, moving things I didn't use on a regular basis into fabric storage cube bins etc. So much better and I'm more creative as a result! And of course, putting like with like helps to keep things organized so I don't spend all my time searching for things!
OMG- I love the magnetic storage containers on your file cabinet. Its so much easier to see everything. The large poster board rack was a great find. Functional organization and access are key.
I have a single drawer unit from Ikea and feel like I have so much space. Which is to say I have art supply envy.
I so enjoy your frugal creating, crafting and painting. It is good to use what you have and I'm working on that. How lovely to have any space to create and zen out. It's so nice to look up and be surrounded by all our "stuff", even when not feeling creative. We all should carve out time and just get started. One day at a time. Thank you for sharing. Over the years I went from doing art on a fold out TV dinner tray, to kitchen table, to small desk in the corner of my living room, to small bedroom, to finally a dedicated art studio. It doesn’t matter where you do art. What matters is just doing art no matter where you are.
I’ve done some amazing watercolor painting on hikes where all I take is a 3-legged camp chair and a light weight day pack with paints, brushes, water, and paper. My lap was my table.
My art studio inherits a mish-mash of storage solutions. Before anything is to be donated I first see if I can use it in my studio. It is amazing that I’m able to fit one more dresser or bookcase or repurpose an item into my space. And my space is always evolving with better organization.
If anyone is looking for storage solutions first ask family and friends or even co-workers to see if they have stuff they are getting rid of. Who knows, you might score a fantastic storage solution.
Not totally related, but recently we were going to donate a medium size tv in a couple days and a aunt who didn’t know about this just happened to mentioned that she was going out to buy a tv. Well, I’m sure you can guess that she now has our TV and is very happy with it. So you see, you just never know unless you say something about it. I for one will be first offering stuff to family and friends before I donate it to charity.

I love my basement craft room! I don't think my stuff would fit in any other room in the house, lol! My ceiling is extremely low but that keeps my husband from wanting to use the space.
I can only dream about a space of my own where I can leave a project out but still get so many ideas watching your videos, LIndsay. I have finally been able to set up a tiny corner of the living room for my crafting though so that helps :)

what a great video Lindsay, so many people show ideal craft spaces which a lot of us can't attain. I craft at the kitchen table and completely understand the problems of having to keep cleaning things away. It definitely stops me wanting to craft.

This is fascinating! So many people are returning to art and finding ways to make a portion of their house or apartment into a workspace. Lighting is a factor for every artist so we love the suggestions for solving that in your home. Do you also use a small, full-spectrum lamp for more precise color tasks?
I have a magnifying light with warm and cool adjustments at my filming table but I fund the daylight CFL and led light really do the trick and are so affordable.

I am hot all the time, my office is in the basement, and it's amazing! Not only is it naturally cooler, but I can crack a window open to let in some cool air without triggering the furnace to come on.
I wish all houses had basements! Our new house has a "crawl space" that has 10ft ceilings at it's tallest, so we are planning on having it upgraded to a basement/workspace/storage, but that will then free up a bedroom for a studio! But your Room of Hoard is very inspiring and gives me hope of getting my book and fiber (yarn and yarn waiting to be spun!) stash under control. Thanks Lindsey! 😊
WOW!! Room of horde indeed! That's awesome! It's like Disneyland for crafters. I have a craft room already but I'm just nosey. I took over the downstairs guest room & got a huge old dining room table. I figured if I got a nice new table I'd be afraid to damage it. Put up some shelves & viola: craft room.

I agree the space is very important. And yes my daughter joins me. She is drawing daily now in school, as she is first grade, so she has not been joining me lately but in time I hope she will again join me more often. The space is very important. I have a small spare room that I put a big bookshelf into that houses our books but also many of our craft supplies and I have my desk for most of my painting supplies. Although I like to try all sort of supplies I still try to keep my mediums contained to my desk. I enjoy my room but lately with using Necolor 2 and their bulky box I feel like my desk is a bit small.

The best decision I made was to convert a corner of my living room for crafting and coloring.. I can leave my stuff out but can also put it away easily.. when the housekeeper is coming or just when I am not coloring. It is part of my identity and feel it helps me to create. I feel lucky they gave me this huge apartment where there is a space to do this 😊.
I had a giant craft room in the basement but with small kids I had to just turn the dining room into a craft room. I do store my extra stuff and paper collections (that are housed in plastic containers) in the basement. When my kids are all in school again I will probably go back down there it’s nice being away and having a huge space

I use the same lights, and also with the daylight bulb in at least one of them - those aluminum lamps are only about $10 at the hardware store, and so handy and versatile and safe! exactly, clipped to the floor joists! which I had my son paint white to make it brighter down there

I have taken on a bedroom. Had to add cubes upward to make more room for all my supplies. Majority of my furniture is repurposed and/or given to me but I did paint it all white. I’ve been on vacation for 2 mo and can hardly wait to return home in 2 wks. I still have plenty of reorganizing to complete. I brought plenty of projects with me to craft on my trip. I’m ready to get back to my happy room. Everyone needs their space to be creative!!
Living in Louisiana, we don't have basements here, too wet. I was working in a small bedroom with barely enough room to turn around. I had a 2 car garage that held basically junk and a lawnmower. No car ever lived there. We bought a shed to hold the lawnmower and the rest of the junk fit in the small bedroom. I now have a portable ac unit venting through the wall, a heater when I need it and all the space I could ever need. There's enough room to hold an old kitchen table for when the grands come over to paint and when I need ventilation, I just open the door.

I live in the South and my home does not have a basement. We have a two and a half car garage and recently took half of the half garage and converted it into a craft area . I hired a company to add shelves and cabinets to the area. Also brought in an antique Formica table that is now my main work area. As you said it is so nice to keep a project out and not worry about cleaning up a mess. There is a window that opens next to the table for ventilation and I use a fan on a stand for additional air flow. Plan to use a space heater during winter months.

It can be worth re-checking the basement for radon every so often. We tested when we bought our home and every so often and it always passed. Many years later, it needed a radon system. As you mentioned, it is better to be safe than sorry. Lovely basement. Thanks for sharing!

I was giddy when I saw the title. That's some great info about basements, too. My trough was put in in 1909 since that's what's carved in the floor, but I can't imagine what it would have been like with a dirt and fieldstone foundation. We have lots of springs around here. But anyways, I like the way your cases make a wall. I've been thinking of doing that with shelving so it's double sided in the middle. I have some ceramic molds and would prefer they were somewhere that weight isn't as much of a factor. My kiln and paint is down there, too. Thanks so much for the tips and tour!

I have a basement craft room that is a mess right now, and I can shut the door and walk away…. This room is a small studio apartment area with a small bath and shower, as well a simple sink and kitchenette…. The original owners put it in for their kids to use at times….. makes for an awesome craft area…. I run two dehumidifiers in our finished basement, and my kids are often in the larger TV movie area. I do find it to be rather cold during winters. I often take projects up to kitchen when I feel it is too cold, but I also have a small heater and an electric kettle for making hot mugs of tea during the colder months…. Yes, I am blessed, and have also held a few gatherings with friends for card making and scrapbooking….

I have a basement space in a finished basement that I call my crappie craft room. 😂 I do projects down there, but I also do some things upstairs in the TV room with my dog and husband. I keep a cute, old suitcase under the coffee table and can throw my current project in there to get it out of the way. Thanks for sharing your experience and space!
Dear Lindsay,
Actually lighting can be a little round plastic donut thing that is a 3 brightness warm colour touch light. An LED charged via a USB, with a round glued magnet on both parts, for under the shelf board, to light up the dark spaces so you can see what is on each shelf.
Also if you have a built in cupboard in the basement and above, eg an old laundry chute, you can have a sky light, and have a solar tube that goes from your top story roof, down to the basement.
You could make a window and a mirror to feel like you are upstairs.
Lol walkie talkies or an intercom to the kitchen!
QUESTION: Could you wear fingerless gloves, and put handwarmers in the top of them?
I have no idea, but in Goulburn we coughed, the cold hurts the chest with lows like twice a season, no snow, at -5 degrees C. Moving back to Sydney is much warmer, we love it here now, only 2 hrs away, Goulburn is on the way to our capital city, Canberra and there are a few ski fields nearby Sydney at only 3hrs away. I can't do cold, nopety nope! Not for me!
You can fill it with plants, that you won't kill, lol, to give you some oxygen and remove smells, musty and counteract the carbon dioxide from breathing out. Some plants are really good at removing smells. There is one called "Mother in Law's tongue". And some house plants that remove smells, and create oxygen for you, can easily have an LED grow light on bendy heads, you could even grow some veggies there! (a plug in heat mat for seeds, and plastic covered seed raising containers with grow mix...)
You could use bicarb in a bucket to take away any smells.
Hanging moving blankets over rods, are great for soundproofing, and at $20AUD each, a really good solution for filming, and echo.
You can put rubber mats down for your feet and then rugs to keep your room insulated. You can get rid of drafts with tapes around door jams and window jams.
You could call it "Your room with Maud" sounds like you could go in there more often to work.
Then again, your kids are gone, you can have
"space 4, 5 and 6 too"

I have all of my craft supplies in my bedroom (I have a lot of suppllies). When I moved in with my daughter there was no extra space for a craft room. You are right when you say when you have to put up unfinished projects over time you just move on to something else. My duaghter is moving out of state next year and I am going back into a nice 2 bedroom apartment and will use the extra bedroom for my craft room again. I have enjoyed my time living with her and the kids but will be very happy to have more space to craft again. I loved your tour and agree that you should use what you have to store your craft items.
When I moved to my current home I had grandiose ideas of putting a studio in the basement...my last house I had a small bedroom that I set up a table - but all my supplies were in a closet or in totes in the basement. I put up cupboards, counters, new lights, flooring, etc....and it is a wonderful space....however...my four little dogs cannot come downstairs (or go up the stairs either), so they sit at the top of the stairs and cry while I am downstairs trying to work on projects...hence - I took over on the bedrooms - made into an office with a desk for my computer, a desk for my watercolour work and a folding table for my acrylic work. It's not perfect - but it works for now. I know that my next house is going to either have a separate building that I will convert to a studio or will have additional rooms that I can take over one of them to make the "perfect" studio space that my dogs will be able to be with me. My issue now is finding the time to be more creatively productive. LOL Take are and thank you for these tips about setting up a Studio

I wish I lived somewhere I could have a basement! In the Florida Panhandle the water table is too high, too much sand, every rain would flood it so quickly! Unfortunately an attic won't work due to heat. Hummm. Need to think of options. I love looking at your storage and hearing your ideas. Always a joy to spend time with you Lindsay!
Perfect timing! I’m revamping my room and supplies. I need all the ideas and inspiration I can get! I’ve pulled everything out. It’s amazing what I managed to fit in one room! Now, I’m working on getting it back, in a manner so it is all easily accessible, I will know what I have, and not buy double (or triple🤦♀️) of things because I can’t find it! Lol!

Wow! That's a lot of stamps. I have three Dollar Tree baskets full.
We have a unfinished basement with a dirt floor. My stuff got moldy stored down there. When my son moved out I took over his room for art supplies.

Loved this video! When I was little, I was so scared to go down to the basement in my grandmother's house. She had an old rocking chair at the base of the stairs, and I was convinced it rocked by itself. I came to the conclusion that the basement was haunted. There was also a laundry chute, and when I had to go get clothes down there I would have to run past the rocking chair. Super scary!! BUT....if the basement was filled with art supplies, it would have been a totally different story. ;-)
Love your room of hoard. I saved my money and bought a 12'x24' cedar shed with a 6'x12' porch as I live in the south and don't really have harsh winters(ac was a must though).I had been looking at craft rooms on pinterest and mostly what I could find was all white ikea shelving and it is not my style at all. My requirements for my craft space has always been 1) its gotta be cheap and 2) it's gotta be sturdy. My friend asked me what my dream craft space looks like and I said ,"Remember the movie 'Spirited Away' where the little girl goes into the furnace room and there's a guy with multiple arms? He has a reasonable workspace, there are drawers all over the place, he's got all the little dust balls working for him, and he's shocked when visitors show up. That's what I'm going for. "

We have made an offer on a house, which has a walkout basement with lots of windows. Hubs has agreed that I can have a nice large area for a craft room. About Radon; don't turn down the perfect house because Radon is detected. We looked at a couple of houses that had Radon mitigation systems in place - and it didn't sound like they are very expensive to have added. We did have the Radon test started yesterday and will likely get the results on Tuesday or Wednesday, but I wouldn't not buy the house, if Radon is detected. Thanks so much for the video - it is very timely for me.

Love this video! Four years the kitchen table was my crafting /sewing space frustrating on many levels as you stated as it had to be cleared each day nothing could be left out. I now have carved out a portion of our garage I scored a lab table from a school for a song that is virtually indestructible. My space is not pretty either but it’s functional and it’s my happy place. Love your channel and your practical teachings. Appreciate that you don’t push the perfect Looking craft room as that’s not a reality for most of us. Keep up the great work .blessings 💜

Great place to do art in! I have a 20x30 portable building with 1/3 storage, 1/3 my skin care products I make Nd 1/3 for cardmaking and arts and crafts. Fun!

My storage space is no where as large, so I have been unmounting my wooden stamps as I go through the seasons. It has worked well, and it saves me SO much space. TFS!
Hi there. I know this will sound crazy but… My husband has been watching you for years. And finally after looking over his shoulder and listening to you in the background when I get home from work, I decided to check out your channel and see what it’s all about. Oh my God… What have I Been waiting for? A friend of mine gave me a machine for card making. It does die cuts and embossing you hand crank it, it’s a Sizzix machine (however you spell) So my husband Michael said definitely you’ll have to check out the frugal crafter she uses that machine and makes amazing cards. So needless to say I’m spending all day watching your videos and making cards. I’m very excited thank you.😊😊😊😊😊😊❤❤❤❤

I definitely agree with you about needing a space for yourself or an area to store your things that you can move somewhere to craft etc. My previous living situation was from hell and art/crafts sure my savior but it says such a pain in the butt to get everything out and "ready" that by the time I took everything out I wasn't in the mood anymore and I would still be down. I would also forget that I had many products and they weren't being used because of the way everything was. I've now moved and have a plastic closet type thing with all of my and my daughters art and craft things in and we both now do a lot more art/ crafts. I definitely appreciate this video. My crafting oasis is in my unfinished basement and l love it. My basement is sectioned off into home gym, crafting, laundry, storage.
I love that frugal doesn’t mean austere and that you make your space cozy and inviting even in a basement. The problem I’ve had with basement spaces is the spiders 😭 I don’t mind the cooler temps and quiet but those darned spiders crawl into everything 😢
