One of my favorites, I make mine with an Earl Grey tea infused London dry gin. I’d highly recommend it! How to Drink did a drink called the Earl Grey MarTEAni which has a recipe for the infusion.
Oh damn, the editing of this video was on-point. The cuts and playing the talking parts over the working parts to make it succinct without feeling rushed was fantastic.
I’m so glad to see the bees knees on this list. It’s the drink that got me into making my own cocktails in the first place, and like you said I was afraid of gin so I always made it with bourbon. Ever since I finally tried gin it’s been my spirit of choice, and I make an infused habanero honey to use in my honey syrup I highly recommended it!
Every Friday my friends bring over some food and I make cocktails and we play games...catan, dominion. That’s our Friday night ritual which has been greatly improved by watching your videos. My friends think I’m a weirdo because I love gin but...who knows...maybe after this challenge they will as well. Thanks guys!
I recently re-tried the martini after picking up some Dolin dry vermouth. The improvement over my first try (Martini & Rossi Extra Dry) was phenomenal.
I already love Gin, I'm just watching to broaden my horizons (and for the fun of it, of course!) ...thanks for sharing, I really like your channel. Merry Christmas!
Gin is an acquired taste, but it really opens up your palate to a lot of delicious possibilities. My all time favorite gin cocktail is The Last Word. A bit pricy with the Green Chartruse, but it really is the last word on gin cocktails!
What a coincidence! I literally just rewatched the Eastside video for a Cocktails 101 I'm hosting because it's such great introduction to gin. In addition to the juniper flavor, I find that people are put off by anything that isn't a G&T for three reasons: 1) Unless the drink is built in the glass it's "too much of a hassle" to make. 2) If the drink calls for bitters or liqueurs outside of Angostura, Aperol or triple sec it's deemed complicated or expensive. 3) Lowballs and drinks served up are often considered "too strong". Once I became aware of this, it got a lot easier to make people excited about making and ordering cocktails.
Bought a bottle of cherry herring and the cashier had a similar story, said he didn’t like it when him and his underage friends split a bottle _forty years ago!_
Phafanapolis lmao jeez maybe try it again now that you’re an adult? I’ve got a ton of friends that gag when they see I have a bottle of Jagermeister, but then don’t even know that’s what is making their cocktail so tasty.
Gin is the spirit of choice for most professional bartenders...a lot ppl just don't know how to properly make a cocktail...gin is the most versatile spirit
The 2 best Gin cocktail (after Martini) are : 1 : The GinQueb - 1 once of Sortilège - 1 once of Boreal Gin - 3/4 once of Ice Cider - 1/2 once Lemon juice - A dash of Maple syrup - Lemon slice - (Shake well with Ice) 2: Singapour sling - 1 once Bénédictine - 2 once of Gin - 1 once of lime juice - 1 once of Pineapple juice - 1 once of Cointreau/tripple sec - Grenadine - (Shake well with Ice) - Serve in a Tumbler full of Ice
I recently bought my first two bottles of Hendricks gin . And made them into Green Gin Giants with my homegrown basil and mint - I’m turning my family Into gin lovers with that one ! ✌🏼
The drinks and music were on point for this episode. I will say that Gin has started to grow on me this past year and look forward to trying these out.
In my opinion, the cuts make for a cleaner, more satisfying video over the single-take format in earlier videos. The condensed delivery of information paired with the interesting camera angles is what makes it superior.
Awesome content! I work as a spirit promoter, and gin has always been a challenge. I did well with the Bombay Bramble one event. I like the first drink, to enhance the botanicals. Most customers are unsure of the drink strategy. Always ask me what to mix with gin. And they don't like tonic! It has to be simple for most folks. Thanks again.
I love Gin, so this was the last push I needed to go and get some Sweet & Dry Vermouth. And finally make Honey syrup. That's gonna widen my spectrum of cocktails in general too! Thank you!
I love gin and I love a good negroni. But not everybody likes that fierce herbal bitterness, so I found a recipe online advising to make a small negroni (20 ml of everything) and then top it up with a dry, orangy IPA beer (I used jaipur from Thornbridge and Bitter Truth Orange Bitters). It's delicious. Converts all the craft beer people I'm sure!
I've found that substituting the Campari with sweeter Aperol goes a long ways towards bringing people around who find a traditional negroni too bitter. Depending on my mood I like it both ways.
@@siggyincr7447 Definitely! You can also split the Campari with Aperol to get something a little closer to a traditional negroni. The Aperol adds a nice touch.
The most common cocktail I make is a simple gin sour, often swapping it up a bit to make it flavoured - strawberry, raspberry, elderflower - but tonight I might shake things up a bit (eeeey!) and try a bees knees or the East side. Maybe one of each.
My start with gin was gin and tonic and negronis. Was horrible, still can't stand campari to this day. For me it was a siagon cooler. Very refreshing and has opened me up to trying more.
Gin has been my preferred drink this year. Boodles, Zephyr, Monkey 47, Aviation - it's more than I used to think. Next year thanks to this channel, I am going to focus on brandy.
Few years back I couldn't stand gin on its own, everything has changed when I started making cocktails at home. Now gin is one of my favourite alcohols
So glad to see the Bee's Knees getting some love. It's a damn good drink and my personal favorite. Aviation Gin goes particularly well with it, too. I actually had been making them with Aviation for a while before I found out that the Bee's Knees is one of the recommended cocktails to make on the Aviation website. Anyway, awesome video. I've tried all but the Artillery, but I can't get ahold of The No.3 London Dry in my area. EDIT: I would also like to say that my dad had been notorious for saying that he hated gin. I made him a Bee's Knees and he had to admit that it was really good.
I universally introduce gin cocktails with a bees knees. Absolutely one of my personal favorites and I always have honey syrup on hand. Having said that, I have never had an eastside (we never have cucumbers...?) Also, my barrier to a gin martini isn't the gin, its the vermouth. I am still building my palate to tolerate vermouth (of any kind), though drinks like the scofflaw are helping there. :)
Try Italian vermouths, or craft versions. Martini and Noilly Prat are somehow the most common while being the least likeable. Drink Manhattans, Negronis and Martinez to get into red vermouths!
Leandro -- Challenge accepted. I will definitely try the Manhattan with Orange bitters and i definitely will add the Artillery to my repertoire. I know that the Bramble is a good introduction to Gin as well. And The Bee's Knees is awesome!! Thanks for the great video.
I love gin (Plymouth being my most recent favorite)! I recently got more into mixology (thanks in part to this channel and others like How to Drink) and I find that gin is the spirit I use the most. I especially like making citrus-y drinks because I feel the citrus pairs nicely with the botanicals in the gin. Great video!
If people ask me, I usually recommmend one of these five: breakfast martini, last word, gimlet, martinez (gin/genever at your discretion), martini. And of course the aviation. ALWAYS the aviation. Not such a big fan of the bee's knees, but on occasion it's fun. That said, going to try the artillery, because I've recently been trying some Spanish vermouths and with the right one you can introduce a whole world of complexity.
Great video. About a year ago I decided to go from Gin-Hater to Gin-Fan and started playing with several brands and cocktails. The drink that really got me hooked was the Bombay Saphire Laverstoke. With some experimenting at home the Aviation became one of my favorites, as well as a Corpse Reviver #2. I like Negroni variations quite a bit as well, but can't take a full dose of Campari. I still can't do a G&T or a Martini - the astringency and bitterness are too much for my palate. When used in cocktails that feature lemon or something viscous - like Cynar - I'm super happy.
Watching you and Greg has taught me how much I love gin. It's in my top three liquors now, and for my fall menu I have three gin drinks of different styles in hopes that I can help other people realize a love for gin.
Have you ever tried Suntory Roku gin? As ever the Japanese take something from another place and turn it next level great. Also as a Brit, gin is in our blood. Just to add, I'm making those last two tomorrow!
I was in the camp that I thought I hated gin due to martini's that I was allowed to taste as a kid that were horrible. And then I started watching you and greg during the pandemic and my father in law won a bottle of Tanqueray, which he gave to me because he "hates" gin... I needed to find a way to drink it and so glad I did. It's now gin is my favorite spirit. I have tried several of your Gin drinks and love the 1904 Martini and Marguerite from 1904 as well and dirty Martini's. Now I am exploring different gins and vermouths. Not a fan of the 1:1:1 Negroni though... sooo bitter. Thanks for showing great recipes for Martini's.
I had a Last Word for the first time a bit ago and it was _positively_ delicious. I look forward to trying a couple of these when I eventually get around to picking up a bottle of gin.
Love me some gin. Nice video! I’ve converted more than a few vodka drinkers. The crowd pleaser martini I go for is: 2.5 Oz gin (bluecoat) .5 Oz cocci 2 dashes grapefruit bitters Lemon twist
LOVE a Bee's Knees! Right now I am on a kick making French 75s, playing around with flavored simple syrups such as a mint or raspberry. They have been a hit with my friends. :)
Update: Subbing with raspberry simple syrup made for an amazing drink, well worth the try! Mint simple syrup is very good too, in a whole different way. Very refreshing in both versions in my opinion.
I would also add a great first intro to gin is a Blackberry Jam Bramble, with vodka is completely flat, but with the botanicals, this is a delicious one even for the non gin drinker 2.5oz gin 1oz lemon juice 3 scoops blackberry Jam Shake & Strain Strong, but would not recommend going any lower than 2oz on gin to keep the balance
It really makes a lot of difference what Gin you use. There are so many out there and I used to buy the cheap stuff from supermarket, until I had a bottle of Monkey 47. Man, that really changed my mind.
Interesting my favorite introductory gin drink is the water lilly. Floral, sweet, sour, delicious. But I actually went straight to gin and tonics when I first started enjoying gin, nothing better on a hot summer day.
I've been making Bees' Knees for my family and friends for a the last few months, ever since the Meyer lemons on our tree have ripened. It's a HUGE hit! Try garnishing with a fresh rosemary sprig.
I only recently tried getting into gin. I started with a Pepsi challenge with 4 different gin martinis and didn't like them. I'll have to go through this progression. This weekend I made a gimlet with the Morganthaler Lime Cordial and loved it. The East Side will be a nice step next step.
I don’t think the martini is a good cocktail to try and get into gin with. The gateway for me was the Gin and Tonic. The John Collins is also a light gin cocktail to try out. After that, I’d go for the Negroni. Also, try sipping on gin neat. I can recommend Roku if you can find it. A pretty sweet and flowery Japanese craft gin that is absolutely delicious!
@@Psykel I did my martinis with New Amsterdam, then got a bottle of Hendricks, which I used for my gimlets. I'll keep Roku in mind for my next bottle of gin.
Interesting concept on the Gin Martini. The martini is probably my absolute favorite gin cocktail. I've been mixing martini's for several years (in fact, I mix one up every Friday after work). I've tried a few variations over the years, but I've never thought to try garnishing with an orange peel. I also prefer my martini's extra dry, but I look forward to giving this recipe a try. Cheers!
The greyhound was the drink that convinced me that I do actually like gin. Something about the way gin and grapefruit work together is magical. I'm still not brave enough to try a martini because I'm iffy on vermouth, but I wouldn't drink a vodka martini either. One of the most refreshing summer drinks ever for me will always be a greyhound with a splash of pomegranate juice. Bonus points if you add a couple of drops of saline to amp up the sweetness of the grapefruit.
Gin isn't a favorite of mine, but I like it in "refresher" cocktails. I do favor the Japanese-crafted Roku Gin is a favorite due to its upfront floral taste. What cocktails would you recommend for this particular Gin?
When I was starting my bartending journey I enrolled in bartending school. The first Spirit my instructor described was Gin. We made tons of classic cocktails starting with my all time fav the Aviation. I always campaign that Gin is the ultimate cocktail spirit and if you hate it that it’s like hating mayo or ketchup on a burger. I work at a place now that frequents ALOT of boomers that fell victim to the Vodka take over but I am slowly but surely turning them back around to Gin. Classic Stirred Gin Martinis instead of Soap Water looking Shaken Vodka ones. Peels instead of Olives
Excellent! I've been waiting for this video ever since you teased the idea of making it a while ago! I love gin, and am always looking to share that excitement with friends but am met with the same hesitation. I'll be challenging my friends and their preconceived notions soon!
Like I posted in an earlier video, I absolutely love the Eastside and yes I tried it once with the vodka and I don't think I've used vodka in any cocktails since! I also used to absolutely not like Gin until I had a negroni (my favourite drink) made with a "poor" gin and I realised Gin is actually an amazing, complex, versatile spirit.
There’s a local gin bar near me but my wife doesn’t like gin. Our bartender made something for her not on the menu and she really liked it, so we picked up the ingredients to make at home. 2 oz Empress 1908 Indigo Gin 1 oz St. Germaine Elderflower liqueur 3/4 oz lemon juice Garnish: About a dozen lavender seeds (a little slap to release the fragrance before adding) Buonissimo!
It's probably my favorite clean spirit. It's such a versatile drink, with tons of different slight base flavours, but I'm always much more oriented towards the more citric ones. I can defnitely drink one of those straight, with some ice cubes and just some dilution. It's such a strong character clean spirit!
I finally made a gin cocktail after years of avoiding it after a bad experience with a gin an tonic. I tried your fresh blackberry bramble and loved it! Thanks for this channel...I'm not much of a drinker but I want to experiment more with cocktails and different spirits.
Franco Gomez Gotta try it with vermouth still! How much does it augment the flavor? I also prefer a creamier vice thicker meringue, so I shake everything all at once.
Dharma&Shred in my experience it makes it slightly less sweet. I think it’s a pretty subtle difference, but I enjoy it. I prefer to make it when I’ve made some raspberry syrup, but muddling raspberries and using simple syrup works well, too. I do the dry shake first then with ice. Such a great drink.
I constructed a commemorative RBG Negroni this weekend. 1 oz Hendricks Gin ; 1 oz Campari; 1/2 oz Sweet Vermouth; 1/2 oz Honey syrup; 2 bs Calvados. Garnished with slice of red apple. Complex taste; sharp tart of the Campari cut by sweet Rosh Hashanah, honey and apple notes. Let me know what you think. Also did it with Empress 1908 gin.
I do love me some gin with my honey ginger sour (one slice ginger - muddled, 20ml lemon, 20ml honey, 40ml gin - depending on the gin profile, I may use 2 dashes of angostura if it is not intense enough)... it has some nice texture because of honey, it's tense, got some bite from ginger, but not overwhelming just enough, it's very herbal and in the end it doesn't end sour but leaves honey flavour. I find it enjoyable even though it is on sweet side (it is balanced with gin botanicals and ginger)
i love gin, particularly flips and DRY martinis, i personally hate too much vermouth, so the one you made here i'd probably not care for, but good video! i don't know what it is about vermouth that makes me dislike it, but i put barely enough to coat the glass, maybe a tsp.
Even before this video, shortly after starting down this cocktail adventure, I found out that I do like Gin. Even more so than Vodka as it turns out. Really a fan of all the different types of Gin in the same way I found I was a huge fan of Rum. Thanks for the upload, gonna try this challenge this weekend.
PREACH! gin for the win. No.3 + MM’s Westbourne 😍 I always felt a properly balanced Jasmine would be another way to get people to warm up to gin (and Campari as well 😈)
1oz London Dry Gin 1oz Cointreau .75oz Fresh Lime Juice .75oz Simple Syrup 1-2 Rosemary Sprigs Shake and strain into a chilled coupe with a rosemary spring garnish. It's delicious and by far my favorite gin cocktail, even if it isn't gin dominant.
I think the Eastside is a good choice as a beginner, but the Bees knees has such a unique taste I'm not sure that it does a good job of representing Gin. I would have gone with a Gin Sour. 2oz of Gin (Tanq or Hendricks if you want to go wild) 1 oz of lemon J, .75 oz of Lime, and .75 oz of 2:1 simple syrup. A splash of Cran also improves it in my opinion. That being said, I am a gin lover and I'm also scared to try a martini.
I don't like the botanical scent of gin because it's so overpowering to me but this looks okay. You made an interesting point about amplifying the alcohol instead of hiding it and made me realize that's EXACTLY what I needed to hear. I'll try these soon, thanks!
"Vodka is gin without botanicals, gin is vodka with botanicals" - what a great distinction and no wonder I adore gin more, the floral and citrus essence is so much more nuanced and delightful, I hope more people will discover it and come to love it
It's a Tuesday morning, and I'm sold on having a Bees Knees for beakfast.

I would also add a great first intro to gin is a Blackberry Jam Bramble, with vodka is completely flat, but with the botanicals, this is a delicious one even for the non gin drinker
2.5oz gin
1oz lemon juice
3 scoops blackberry Jam
Shake & Strain
Strong, but would not recommend going any lower than 2oz on gin to keep the balance
Yep. Couldn’t agree more
My bartender in the before times was so happy I was a gin fan. Cheers
It really makes a lot of difference what Gin you use. There are so many out there and I used to buy the cheap stuff from supermarket, until I had a bottle of Monkey 47. Man, that really changed my mind.
Great job Leandro - I think you really nailed it this episode!
Interesting my favorite introductory gin drink is the water lilly. Floral, sweet, sour, delicious. But I actually went straight to gin and tonics when I first started enjoying gin, nothing better on a hot summer day.
I love the gin cocktails to my core. BTW.... your mien is of a smartly coifed barman this morning... Thanks guys!
I've been making Bees' Knees for my family and friends for a the last few months, ever since the Meyer lemons on our tree have ripened. It's a HUGE hit! Try garnishing with a fresh rosemary sprig.
Thank you for the suggestions!
My favorite gin cocktails are Aviation, Last Word, Corpse Reviver No. 2, & Southside!
Been slowly getting into Gin more and more, and have only has 1 of the 4 of these. So will have to give the others a shot!
I only recently tried getting into gin. I started with a Pepsi challenge with 4 different gin martinis and didn't like them. I'll have to go through this progression. This weekend I made a gimlet with the Morganthaler Lime Cordial and loved it. The East Side will be a nice step next step.
The Morganthaler Lime Cordial is excellent!
Danielle Johnson Cool! Another great gin on the sweeter, floral side is Citadelle, from France.
I agree with @psykel Citadelle is a lovely gin. That made me think about another that I’ve enjoyed The Botannist Scottish gin.
Gin is wonderful. Best spirit for cocktails
I love gin, always have. You inspired me to make a Corpse Reviver #2 and God it’s so good. Cheers!
I'm glad to see your production value has gone up!
First two cocktails are fire classic and delicious
There’s a local gin bar near me but my wife doesn’t like gin. Our bartender made something for her not on the menu and she really liked it, so we picked up the ingredients to make at home.
2 oz Empress 1908 Indigo Gin
1 oz St. Germaine Elderflower liqueur
3/4 oz lemon juice
Garnish: About a dozen lavender seeds (a little slap to release the fragrance before adding)
Buonissimo!
These are great! The two I've use as intros to gin (with quite a bit of success) are the Tom Collins and the Clover Club.
Clover club is so effing good.
Dharma&Shred yes! I’ve seen recipes with dry vermouth. I put in half ounce, and it works out great.
Franco Gomez I haven’t made raspberry syrup yet, I just Middle raspberries. Thanks for the tip! I’ll have to get some vermouth tomorrow. Cheers, bro!
Love the new editing style! Props to Marius👍
Whoa, Marius getting fancy with a new camera angle and some narrated b-roll ?! Classy!
I'm not a big fan of gin but I will give this a try. hopefully this will help change my pallet for the greater good!
Never liked gin. Did the challenge. I now like gin! Thank you!
i love gin, particularly flips and DRY martinis, i personally hate too much vermouth, so the one you made here i'd probably not care for, but good video! i don't know what it is about vermouth that makes me dislike it, but i put barely enough to coat the glass, maybe a tsp.
No.3 + MM’s Westbourne 😍
I always felt a properly balanced Jasmine would be another way to get people to warm up to gin (and Campari as well 😈)
1oz London Dry Gin
1oz Cointreau
.75oz Fresh Lime Juice
.75oz Simple Syrup
1-2 Rosemary Sprigs
Shake and strain into a chilled coupe with a rosemary spring garnish.
"Vodka is gin without botanicals, gin is vodka with botanicals" - what a great distinction and no wonder I adore gin more, the floral and citrus essence is so much more nuanced and delightful, I hope more people will discover it and come to love it
You should make a video like this, but for whiskey, culminating in an old fashioned
The bees knees and eastside are definitely amongst my favorite cocktails, but no matter how hard I try, I just cant seem to like the Martini
