Back in the '80s and '90s, when I used to know him and sometimes work with him, this pro photographer friend of mine who worked with just about every actor/actress and model in the LA area, Dominic Petruzzi, used to only shoot with one lens, the Canon 100 Macro.
Loved this video!! Not too techy, real life photographer giving real life review! I have purchased pre-order and can't wait to use with my newborn shoots to capture all those precious baby details!

100 mm is one of my favourite glass!!! I used EF version for many years, for portraits as well!
I loved the review -- and the interior photos of the flowers were breathtaking! Great work! I actually ordered the RF 100mm the first week of preorder. I originally ordered it for macro alone. But it just might take the place of my RF 85mm f/1.2 in portrait work!

I would love to keep atleast 1 macro lens in my arsenal. There are days when you get stuck in a rut in photography and I always tried macro to freshen things up a bit. This lens still looks great to have. I was so hyped about the SA but it looks like I may not even require that feature now. Thanks Irene for insights of this lens. 😊

Great review, this lens intrigues me. I have owned the 100mm L for several years and like it. I just wish they never added the SA control and sold the lens for a little less. I can't think of any situation in where I would want to move the SA control to the left or right.

Hopefully I am going to be getting the RF 100mm Macro on Monday. I am not sure I would ever really use the SA control ring, but it might be useful for flowers and maybe a unique detail shot for a wedding (probably would still need a more in focus shot to go with that).
i got the ef 100mm L version and its locked on my 6D mk ll dslr for portraits etc. i must say i love it i and now when i move from dslr to mirrorless this new 100mm rf version ´gonna be my must have thats for sure .. thx for a great video Irene ;-)
Looks great for macro! Love how sharp it is. I might wait for the RF 135mm announcement and price before I jump into the 100mm. So I can decide which one to buy first.

Excellent job Irene this macro Lenses is not a bad at all I'm not a huge Canon fan..more Nikon but just looking and observing your video makes me want to shoot more macro images.. and I have to agree, please make more or deliver more gear videos...my last question for you I know we are in the month of June but is there a possibility you could teach us to pose couples or couples photo shoots?.. if it's not too much to ask?..

Great work as always Irene! The spherical aberration is interesting for sure. As much as I would love to have this lens for its macro/portrait versatility and get rid of my Sigma 85mm I don't think I will use it much and will most likely get the EF version if I were to get a macro lens.
BTW I love how you say UA-cam in your intros lol it's cute.

I definitely prefer the 85 mm 1.2 with the flowers because it helps bring the focus to your model. If she were to have a not so busy background behind her, I feel the 100 mm 2.8 would work 😊

Lens manufactures don't rely on sales Gimmicks like phones. If that was the case the entire photography industry would be dead which it borderline is on the verge of doing anyway like it did in the 1990s when we lost 70% of camera and lens manufacturers

People push products in a lot of ways. I works are a car dealership too long to trust salespeople.
And the more expensive the item, the worse it gets. Camera gear is an investment cause it ain't cheap

Beautiful pictures and video, Irene! I love both photos at 2.8 and 1.2, perhaps though for the macro 2.8 the background just has to be further removed from the model, I liked being able to see the texture of her dress and sharp figure throughout on that one, but equally love the entire dreaminess of the 1.2 shot. The figurine your brother made is fantastic, such a talented family :D

Did you refocus after you changed the SA setting? I was wondering if that is why the images in the negative and plus setting of the SA are blurry. I believe that you have to refocus after you change the setting. Thank you very much for the video. I have pre-ordered the lens already.

Irene, while shooting with that macro lens, did you have any problem with accidently moving the SA Ring? Is there an indent at the neutral point?
There is a lock on it so if you don’t want to accidentally move just lock it. It kind of slides easily into the neutral point, so no trouble changing the position of the ring
Gear Review Request: R6 or R5 using the EF - EOS R Control Ring Adapter on EF Lens 85mm. Would love to hear your thoughts on if you find a difference in image quality of using and EF Lens on the R5 or R6 with the adapter. Thanks

woh, this reminds me of the Nikon 105 f/2 DC. It wasn't a macro lens but it was one of the earlier lenses with a "defocus" or "SA ring"
Great review. Can't say I totally get the SA control as you pointed out. If the in-focus area stayed sharp, it would be a mind blowing feature. I'll get the chance to play with it since I have one on preorder. Looks like another winner in the RF line which is stacked with special glass up and down the range. This will pretty much complete my kit, but I'd love to see Canon make something compact that I want to use, like a 28/2.8-2 that is weather sealed and of high quality. As of right now my most compact RF lens is the 50/1.2!!
Off topic, do you have a video about your experience with Godox on the R5? I've heard it can get a little mixed up when using HSS + TTL. I currently have a full Godox kit, much like yours, but my trigger is for Nikon TTL + HSS, so am considering picking up a canon version and would like to get some more info on what works well. Mostly a manual shooter, but would like to have TTL available.
I shoot my flashes manually always, so I didn’t have any problems with Godox

I am not sure if the SA control ring will make the image sharper if you set F stop to about f8 - f11, if you set to f2.8 to about f6.3 and use the SA control ring would that make it more softer?
It will, but I still don’t like it personally
@@IreneRudnyk I will test the lens when it arrive in a weeks time, I heard several youtuber include yourself think the SA control ring is useful more of gimmick. I doubt I'll be using SA control ring much unless there is firmware update that make it sharp even wide open
Great review, I always thought the SA ability, based on images seen from Canon, made the images look more soft, dreamy looking. I'm glad you mentioned how much the SA changes the image. I plan on picking this up once it's available, so I can have a dedicated RF Macro lens.

Hi Irene. Yes, I think that there is a good opportunity here for you to do 'how to use it and what can it do for me?' reviews. There are very few channels just concentrating on just the non-specification aspects. Some artists will not have considered using a macro lens for portrait and it is very useful to see what can be achieved with your beautiful talent both with still and video photography. I'd advise covering both genres as it should expand your viewer base. Cheers. BobUK.

Irene, how did you like this lens as opposed to the EF lens? I mean, ok, RF lenses are better, but did you notice a BIG difference aside from the detail shots?
big difference in quality, sharpness, being able to get closer, stabilization. It's definitely worth an upgrade

Irene, I'm sure the answer to the following question is yes but I'm going to ask anyhow just to make sure. Did you refocus each time you were wanting to demonstrate minus and plus settings of SA adjustment. As silly as that may sound, I just want to make sure that lack of refocus wasn't reason for soft subject image for both minus and plus shots.
lol, yes all images were in focus all the time. Its hilarious you would assume i was dumb enough to do that
@@IreneRudnyk No offense intended, but I had seen in another review where they specifically called out that refocus was needed whenever SA was adjusted. It was partly hope on my part that it was something as simple as that otherwise the SA feature seems to be of much more limited value. This was my first time to watch one of your reviews. Well done, and look forward to other reviews you might be making in the future.
Ive pre-ordered it and then will be selling the EF one, a quote about £400 so not to bad after the 10 years I've had it

I definably recommend that you purchase this lens. I personally own the EF version of this lens. The Canon 100mm F/1.8L Macro IS USM lens, and it is a fantastic lens. Its my favorite lens that I have in my lens kit. The reason I highly recommend you buy this lens is because you get the best of both worlds with this lens. It's like having two lenses in one, and you get a lot of bang for your buck. #1. the lens is great for macro photography, and #2. you can use it for taking portraits. Not a lot of lenses you can do that with. These are my two reasons I love this lens so much, and that it is my favorite lens in my kit. To have that versatility in one lens is a great thing to have. Again, It's like getting two lenses, and buying one. It would be a great addition to your lens kit.
