I'm in SF and it's not that bad once you learn to read traffic well. Drivers in big cities are used to sharing the roads with cyclists and usually are pretty good. Of course, there are exceptions where some drivers are just having a bad day or something. The key is to be predictable and be seen. Daytime running lights are great. Maybe for the next go pick a range of dates and each morning assess what is the best for you. Also, in my 14 years of competing as a swimmer, I have to say my tapers into Nationals and other key meets took 2 weeks. Started off high intensity longer distances, pulled back intensity but distance still up. At this point I would feel terrible. Then distance down, but short intensities up. Maybe go back to the hill you got Everesting record on? Going straight downhill with a longer recover time, seems like you nailed the issue. Going for the record these days, every small detail now is + or - and magnified on times, good luck on the next one Phil.

Phil I dont recall if you mentioned consideration for wind direction and speed in your attempt? It can potentially play an enormous role on climb times at the same power over a sustained period. I just don't remember you mentioned it before (maybe I missed it?).

I know what the problem was. Your human, not a robot. Don’t be too hard on yourself, I believe in you and wish I could be there to cheer you on

I often do hard rides to work mostly long intervals or pulsing and relaxing 50 to 100 watts above my FTP, but then I sometimes have so many days off that I feel like I should be withering away. Then I get on my bike and I feel wonderful, bursting with energy and strength. I often repeat this and still feel very strong. I then begin the question the logic of pushing every day with only a couple of days off. I wonder sometimes if maintaining and extending the inflammatory process after a hard session (i.e. by not doing long warm down rides every other day) causes the necessary adaptations within your muscles (toxic stimulus = good) I think warm down rides are necessary if you need to go flat out again for the next race but is not improving you. It's all guesswork with limited practice from the comfy chair.

Phil, I don't know anything about training other than watching some trainer road and Dylan Johnson YT videos, but not having breaks longer than 1 day at a time in over 18 months doesn't sound right.

Phil, have you ever looked at your data to determine what percent grade you climb most efficiently? (measured as feet climbed per minute) I would think if things get to steep, if might be counter productive to your Everesting goal
