Power systems are one of the hallmark reasons why so many of us love shonen manga. They make for crazy powers, intense fights and overall way more interesting worlds. You may be wondering how to create a manga power system for your own manga, or you may just be wondering how manga power systems work. Well, in this video I'm going to show you how you can create your own manga power system. And I think it takes just about 6 things to get it right.

I’d say the biggest one is the Brandon Sanderson rule: the extent to which your audience understands the power system is equal to how much it can be used to solve problems (including fighting). If your system can theoretically do everything, then it can’t really do anything. Basically make sure it’s well defined, understood, and consistent

Right there, when you said “soul trait”, it seriously reminded me of the magic system of my book, “the Mage”.
Each person has an elemental attribute that is engraved in their soul. They can only wield the element that resonates with their engraving, and if they try to force it, they “shatter their soul” and lose any semblance of sanity.
Same here with mine which is called a Mage Arts. Which is one of like three power systems present in my own story called Skyfall: Blackout. It is based on the existence of a person (their mind soul and body mixing as one) which basically means DNA, one's soul color and also one's experiences determine the character's Mage Art but also changes it later on.

In reference to point #6, I think a great example of this is demonslayer, because even though the breathing techniques don't actually manifest in the real world, the effects are drawn to show the technique in a way that's understandable to the audience.

My "story" has a power system called "zros" (z-ro-s) it meassures the power of ones soul :3
I listened to this as a writer mind, because I have a power system but it has it's plot holes because I am just one person and my likeminded alpha-reader and culture checker lives 18 hours of time difference from me :D

I haven't properly read or watch the series but after watching some WT related videos, I'm intrigued on how almost every character is given the same exact tools to utilize their powers. Daisuke Ashihara took an interesting route for WT power system.
@@Joshua_N-A indeed. I won't say the show is great... dialogue isn't his strong suit.
But despite many of them having same tools, you can visibly see how differently they use them.
What I love the most about it is that characters can get visibly hurt during fights.
They get their limbs chopped off, or get riddled with bullets, and it has consequences.
Unlike in most anime where the two sides punch each other, get patchwork bruises, and just continue until the writer is done with the fight.
In around 3:14 how did you just automatically put light and shadows on all buildings
Where do you get those terms such as AUGURS and Innatus? Was it just a random words or there is a dictionary or thesaurus for fantasy terms
soo how do i write it so fights are based off skill and experience? like this guy has a fire ability but is up against a water guy. but fire guy wins do to skill and experience?
Have fire guy move water guy away from water so he can't use it, controlling the battle field.
Alternatively, fire guy is dramatically more skilled than water guy. Fire guy knows that his power is technically heat manipulation, which means that if he removes heat from the area instead of adding to it he can also use ice powers, freezing the water and allowing him to beat water guy. The deeper an understanding of the powers you have, the better you can utilize them.

I think the best power systems balance how hard or soft it is to fit the story. If we're talking about shonen types stories a hard power system works a lot better. When the audience knows the hard rules of what can and more importantly what cannot be done in a fight the audience gets really invested trying to predict how things would turn out or figure out solutions for themeselves. But making the rules too hard doesn't leave room for creativity and makes the fights lack any surprises. A great example of this balance working perfectly is nen in hxh. Almost any ability can be made using the different rules but the restrictions keep them balanced and interesting. A story that lack this balance is Tower Of God. In the Manwha the power system is way too soft. This really starts to become a problem later in the series when most fights come down to huge energy blasts with no real context on what makes one energy blast superior to another. Characters just seem to pull out stronger and stronger attacks without any tangeble tactics behind it. I guess DBZ has similar problems but i haven't seen/read it so idk.
The base of my power system : [ ethereal Sync ] it's known as the natural source energy of literally everything. After an event which occurred during 1829 where people attained enlightenment and gained the ability to utilize ethereal sync, supernatural powers all over the world started appearing.
However like literally any other planet would, It was complete chaos until the organization known as [ Remanis ] appeared out of nowhere, full of the newly termed [ ethereal sorcerers ].
Basically when a person reaches the age of 17 to 21, they're ethereal sync reaches peak levels so if you stay in the same tier of power for that stage of time you're ethereal sync would be at its peak at such a time, this is specifically known as [ the soul peak ].
Tiers of power :
There are respectively five widely known stages, of which two extra ones which basically no one knows about also exist.
The first stage known as the Spirit stage( Awakening ), is when people just start to unveil their respective abilities along with the beginning to their journey of power, they're also basically the weakest you can be.
Keep in mind that every stage has five stars along with an extra six stars although you don't actually have to go through that stage ( star ).
After which there is the soul stage ( beginner ), of which you actually start to become strong in terms of the entire system along with the fact that you're astrology ( affinity ) starts to manifest more ( Will be talking about it after the stages
Then there is the karmic stage, of which karma affects your abilities the most ( karma is one of the absolute rules of basically everything which dictates the good and bad depending on the strength of the people who saw, who saw it in total, why that action was done, how you see good and evil, and how the people who saw it see good and evil. ).
During the comic stage of which you can finally truly store your ethereal Sync inside of your karmic pool, in some worlds it's basically the peak of the power system.
After which is the balance ( equilibrium ) stage. People truly receive balance of all of their abilities, allowing for a lesser cooldown time of all their techniques, and the fact that the strength of their overall abilities would be greatly enhanced.
Then there is the ethereal stage, in the ethereal stage your body becomes truly ethereal and you're connected to ethereal Sync at a seemingly peak.
Due to this unless attacks are coded with very much potent and strong ethereal sync, attacks won't even be able to hit you.
Along with the fact that you can basically bend the laws of all the things ( trust me the verse itself is actually very overpowered but I'll be explaining that itself later ).
And due to multiple spoiler reasons I won't tell you about the last two stage's.

Astrologies :
Astrology is basically act like the elemental or non-elemental affinities in the entire world/verse.
Astrology is basically take form or shape inside of your mind space / karmic pool which allows you to see what your astrologies are.
For example if your mind fragments ( basically fragments of your insanity and sanity ) take the shape of a book, that means that you're astrology is narrative ( plot basically ).
Along with the fact that a lot of astrologies have special names for example Sanguis which is actually a blood astrology and takes the form of Crimson red mental fragments in a puddle.

The soul :
The soul is a singular culmination of all of your experiences and mentality inside of one singular thing. Due to this fact, Ariel sorcerers can actually survive a couple seconds without their heads as it doesn't have all of the information which makes them up inside of their brain, this is also what makes mental related astrology simply so terrifying as they can affect not only your brain but your soul if they have enough mastery.
Keep in mind that the soul has five parts of which every time you unlock the ability to truly see that part ( unlocking more of the stored mentality and information stored inside of your soul as well ) You gain a special ability.
It could be related to your astrology to full on teleportation even if you don't have the Spacia astrology ( space ).

Classes - main classes and subclasses :
The difference between classes is that main classes are basically your overall class and dictate a lot of the techniques and abilities that you will learn, meanwhile sub classes are a more specific representation of your abilities and you can only have three of them.
For example if my main class is farmer than one of my subclasses might be [ seed specialist ] or something of the sort.

Status :
Everyone upon Awakening gains the ability to see a representation of their soul known as the status window. Although the status window can't really do anything else.

Astral techniques :
Astral techniques make up most of the techniques and abilities which aren't Soul techniques ( the powers unlocked by achieving more of your soul ) and it can range from a simple fireball to creating a white scythe out of nowhere ( scythe summoning ).

Other energies :
There are multiple other energies, for example abyssel essence, which I won't be explaining today however they are owned by multiple other races.
Whether it be the lunarians the ashborns, The humans, the demons, basically every single one of them except the humans have an extra energy to utilize.
It should be also noted that extra specialties can also gain you these energies for example the moon sorcerer which gives you the ability to utilize luminescence which previously only the lunarians could use.

Spoiler :
A man with pure black hair, along with rare silver eyes, was wearing complete and other rags. Along with that he was the only person in a dark alley, seemingly waiting to meet someone.
As he's large beard suddenly seemed more emphasized than ever, another person wearing a complete black suit, covering his head with a mask ( + cap ) walked up to him.
As the gray haired man looked at the suited person, He brought out a cigarette and lit it on fire somehow , presenting his now apparent pyro astrology ( fire ).
"Nah,you aint that bitch!" The gray haired man shouted, with clear disdain for the suited man.
Along with the fact that the smoke coming out of his cigarette was slowly turning into a beast made out of smoke. It was also somehow releasing sweat through some sort of supernatural function.
"Soul technique (2) : smoking fog beast!"

2 :
In this world Every mythical creature is an actual thing and they are known as celestial folk. Celestial folk are born from the supernatural fusion of the energy of multiple bits and legends colliding. These supernatural forces are known as constellations. For example, let’s take the myth baba - yaga for example.yaga is a mythical creature who puts children to work after which she eats them do this she would probably be made with a divergent amount of constellations, one of which may be cannibalism, and another one may be Guardian as the fact that she is known as the guardian of the fountain of life.
It should also be noted that every myth and legend as long as there’s some sort of beast, can lay an egg known as a tale script.tale scripts are basically representations of everything that celestial folk has ever done, and therefore it would share all of its abilities. However, if you find something known as a myth insignia on the shell most baby celestial folks take the form of you can absorb that tale script to gain all of its abilities.
After which, due to the myth, insignia, multiple golden, with slight tinges of silver would be formed around your body these would be the energy of what you would have to transfer your myth tale - basically everything you’ve ever done - so that you can use your special ability’s. keep in mind that there are five stages of power like my previous power system, which represents the resignation that you have with your new celestial abilities.
1 - mancer : mancers have the ability to utilize my tail to activate their celestial techniques to their advantage, however compared to higher staged opponents their control is pretty bad most of the time making it so that most of them don’t use their celestial abilities at risk of going out of control.
2 - cosmic mancer : A advanced version of the previously termed Mancers gaining the ability to efficiently, manipulate their celestial techniques, allowing them to finally go beyond the stage of normal human limits. However, despite this, their abilities are still clearly bound, and they still have a risk of losing control to their connection with their Celestial folk losing control over their own bodies.
3 - starbourne : they hold the ability to exquisitely, utilize their cosmic forces, and energies to near its full potential, allowing them to even transform into a subversion of their celestial folk. They have a natural resistance to cosmic attacks.
4 - cosmic lords : cosmic lords have the ability to truly control, cosmic forces, and Star like energies to basically it’s full potential, raising their physical stats to beyond the peak of what any normal human should be able to achieve, even without enhancing their ability to fight their celestial form.
5 - celestial folk : you have truly absorbed the essence of your celestial folk allowing you to do feats like blowing up a mountain or destroying cities with relative ease, possibly even wiping islands off the map.

Power creep is huge too. It's sad when a story goes from the hero getting a single new ability being thrilling, to the hero getting a pile of new powers and it's just meh.

Question to respond to point #2: what would you say is the ratio for how obvious difference in levels should be, vs leaving room for the audience interpretation?
Personally, I believe it depends on the demographic you’re targeting. For a lot of manga and comics, I find myself a bit annoyed by either over-explanation of powers or ranking systems that have all possibilities already set in stone, but that’s majorly due to the fact that I read a bit literally and have an understanding of how or why things might happen in a supernatural setting. I think it’s awesome when I can look at a cast of characters and analyze, on my own, what a conflict between those characters might be like as opposed to being downright told. To remedy this for my own audience, I made sure to make the “rankings” between the classes of powers potent but not absolute, using the power system itself as a reason why no one should be underestimated, regardless of their class. It’s instead how they use that power and, sometimes, even take advantage of their weakness. Still, based on the inherent strengths of each class, they all have advantages over one another, and oftentimes, their advantages number more than a few depending on their matchup. For a ranking system, I think it could remain grounded like my own personal bias, but for a more standard, concise system, I believe it’s good to make the rankings believable/understandable to your audience. Why is this power above the other one? Are there any other factors that might alter the ranking of their power? Is the ranking not limited to power but also combat ability? Stuff like that.
@@goodeygoody I totally agree… a lot of (more commercial) authors and artist these days really love to dumb down their material, and it takes away from the fun of figuring it out on your own. Part of the beauty is having mystery behind the lore, and being able to use your imagination, before the mystery unfolds. I think proper timing of the inevitable exposition dumps is important as well. But I REALLY appreciate your insight!!!!!!!!
Like One Piece is a perfect example of this with the bounties. Gives the reader a good idea but not an absolute representation of power.
Feel free to correct me if I’m misunderstanding your question! There’s probably a large number of possibilities to choose from (the first long reply is a really good idea), but here’s what I first thought of: You can do the basic “The stronger you are the higher your rank”. Like rank 1s can punch a hole in a wall, but rank 3s can punch a hole in boulder. I also think it’d be interesting to see a system were raw strength doesn’t guarantee promotion. “A” is the strongest person in the story, but they’re greatly out ranked by “B” because “B” is smarter/wiser and knows how to make their inherently weaker power much more useful.
Generally you can drive two roads
-Subdivide the measured attributes (ex. Power, Cost, Flexibility, and Potential) in order to create composite scores and mystify character by eschewed readings or mismatched scales between categories.
- Power reading come from a biased/uninformed source the main example being One Piece bounties, but more commonly rumors about a character or other side chatter.

my hc is that stands are a manifestation of hamon 😅
My guess is, Araki realized he can't make hamon a diverse enough power system to keep things interesting in the long run so he came up with and switched to stands, which makes for a much more diverse system.
Theres also the fact that its generally gonna be used by the good guys only. Yea sure, we saw Straitzo being both a hamon user and vampire, but the entire reason he switched sides is cuz he saw hamon couldnt give him what vampirism could, so bad guys would usually turn to vampirism and good guys towards hamon to beat them. In contrast to that, almost anyone can end up having a stand, and both villains and heroes would want one for reasons (tho most just end up having one from the getgo)
It didn't really disappear, it just wasn't needed, since they weren't fighting vampires. Joseph uses it in the fight against DIO in part 3, but because The World is so overwhelmingly powerful it doesn't end up doing much. After that there's no vampires so no hamon.

I find it super interesting to have a power system and learn about other peoples ideas but my story I have multiple different power systems four to be exact they all have their own reasons for existing and are very different from each other there is my divine magic which only one of my characters has along with the gods it allows my character to do great feats with ice but it is killing my character and the more it's used and the extremity it's used kills him faster, there is the mortal magic which consists of simple abilities which are about as strong as each other and are different for everyone it all depends on the users tactics, summoned weapons these have two sub categories for my species one getting two weapons another getting one they are all different, and then there are the wings with grace a healing substance all winged people have this and it acts as the way they fly but if they are damage or have grace removed like a blood donation it can be used to make strong medicines all of these vary on my species of chracters and can be mixed in a balanced way with cross breeding to balance it out thank you for coming to my ted talk
