I feel that Ben was always on their side, but constructive criticism is always the best way to go and improve as a performer and he always gave them things that they were able to implement and improve for the following show

Agreed. He always had positive things to say along with the critiques that were way more constructive than destructive. Knowing what a musical genius he is, getting that feedback was vital to their growth IMO. From here on out I think the only time he says anything remotely negative is in performance 11 when they go out of tune for a split second (but of course the music nerd heard it lol).

Probably over a year late, but dude: Those headphones shine when you've got complete skull connection. I know it sucks to drop the caps(I have to do it too), but it's such a benefit in the listening experience

I loved Avi's bass in this one. Along with Kevin made it so grungy and dirty and good., Scott's vocals when he gets all raspy, love it. Kirstie and Mitch with the vocals and vocal instrumentals (loved Mitch's violin). I remember watching them on this show. Everybody knew they were watching greatness. The problem back then was whether or not the acapella community was ready for such a big change and would vote for them. In the finale it was actually a toss up as to whether they would win or not. It wasn't like they were going to walk away with it. Basically at the end it was them with their new acapella style against a traditional College acapella team that was excellent. Thank God America got it right😎

When you get finished with all the performances, you must watch the Superfruit episode where they watch some these videos. Mitch goes something like ‘Who put that hat on me?’

Can't help but notice that Kirsten is never given the credit she deserves, she is what sets PTX apart from all other groups. She goes places that male only groups can only dream of.

Yeah, been in a Capella group with four men, They give them a different sound, and her in combination with Mitch Voice, witch is a contra tenor gives them a lot of possibilities, I always said that ALL of them are fundamental for their success, the beat of Kevin, great bass in Avi or Matt, and the voices of Scott, Mitch and Kirstin, but I always like when people give credit to Kirstin, especial in the early days when she didn't sing as much as the last years

Ben's criticism was so helpful. They take it to heart and improve every week. If you watch some of the other groups, you can see that they were right to worry. Some of the groups were very good and it was not a given that they were winners. 2011 PTX was not 2022 PTX. They have worked their fannies off to be where they are today.

Hello D, So glad you are continuing the PTX Sing-Off Journey. Love your reactions and your appreciation of the talent of PTX. Be sure to do the entire sing-off journey, including their performance after their win, their performance when they came back as guests for Season 4 AND Superfruit episode where Scot and Mitch critique their Sing-Off journey (hilarious). BTW - tomorrow, Sunday July 24 is Mitch Grassi's birthday, hope you will do more PTX, Mitch solo work (Your Power, Kiss the Air, Graveyard) and Mitch's project as Messer (Love Supply, Gasoline Tears, Machine, Roses) to celebrate the birthday this week!

You know, I’ve seen the same list of must-see performances, over and over. It’s always “1, 4, 7, 10, 12.” But that list doesn’t include this one, where the judges agree, they were really in the sweet spot. I’d agree that those 5 were more mind-blowing than some others, but I think the must-see list should look like this: 1, 3-8, 10-12. 2 isn’t great, and 9 wasn’t great, imo. The rest are classics, even if people forget they exist from time to time, because of things like 12 or 7. Btw, 9 may have been a miss for some, even a big Usher fan I watched reacting to it recently (Salvo, I see you out there), but it’s still fun, and 2 may have missed with the judges, but the back half of it _was_ in the mind-blowing category. So realistically, the list should be 1-12, plus openings and finale performances and returns on later seasons. And everything else they’ve done. It’s all must-see.

I know everyone has always said that Mitch really suffered from anxiety and insecurity but I have never noticed it. Well, except for the announcement of winning, and they drew out the suspense foreverrrr! He may not have been Scott, but he always looked comfortable on stage in these performances to me.

    • @hernameispekka_Rebecca

Well, faking it likely and he always felt more secure on stage than off it. He very much had anxiety and called his dad begging to get home because it was so hard on his mental health. But he had signed a contract and wanted it so stuck it out. His dad wouldnt had been behind him doing it unless scott was there. When mitch said scott would be there Mike was fully behind it because Scott could take care of mitch.

@@judithL3100 Just remember that you only see what they put on camera. Half the time they were doing Superfruit videos they had other people in the room behind the camera, so even that wasn't actually as intimate as it seemed. Which isn't to say that they weren't great friends, but even they have described that time in their friendship as co-dependent. Very helpful in some ways, but also not healthy in others. It wasn't sustainable. Mitch's dad has said that one of his proudest moments was when Mitch decided on his own it was time to get his own place because it was a very adult decision and a sign Mitch was ready to grow into his own person.
As to the stage presence... you can see it in his old highschool videos as well. Mitch is a performer, he gets energy from being on stage and in the moment he's good. That doesn't negate the fact that everything else about being on a stage is stressful to even those without anxiety issues. The way Mitch's dad tells it, they were working 14+ hour days, doing the arranging and choreography themselves and it was the first time Mitch had ever really been away from home. Anyway, most people who have anxiety work really hard to mask that fact, so the less you see of it the more energy they are spending on keeping up appearances and the less energy they have for more productive things. It's a lot.
