They're considered a major pest by beekeepers due to their habit of launching mass attacks against entire colonies of other eusocial insects, honeybees included (they will kill every adult and then take the remains and the larvae/pupae within the nest to feed their larvae); however, at the same time they're valuable in controlling populations of yellowjackets or smaller hornets, and they also act as a major deterrent to the spread of the nonnative European honeybee, to the benefit of the native Asiatic honeybee (the Asian giant hornet will prey on both species, but the Asiatic honeybee has adapted to deal with their mass attacks, while the European honeybee hasn't).
