Mario Nights really feels like a fake game that'd be a great topic for an urban legend or two. Yeah, the thing is you could get a story out of this without relying on blood and skulls and edgy. I've always been fascinated by fake games that, just feel real. This game reminds me of B3133, which is a Mario ROM hack of Mario 64 that doesn't overdo the horror aspect. Although the game has few jumpscares, they're extremely rare, and rest of the game seems to be focusing on trying to provide this dreamlike experience. Mario Nights has potential in the hands of a talented storyteller or mod maker to create something that isn't gross or bloody but just, uncanny. Like you said, Subtle Nintendo Horror.
4:17 Theory: Mario Nights is from the timeline where the SNES CD project went though, allowing for games with FMV cutscenes ala the CDi of our timeline.
Calling it now, this video is gonna blow up. This is my favorite video of yours so far and I would love to see more stuff like this where you talk abt niche internet things/gaming obscurities
Thank youuuu, I've always thought Mario Nights was an intriguing concept but every time I'd look for content about it there was only ever like 2 videos and a reddit post.
Man I didn't even know about the real cancelled game you mentioned Early Mario stuff from when the franchise didn't quite have it's iconicities down is definitively a whole interesting topic and this does capture that feel very well I think stuff like this a big part of why people are so invested in lost/cancelled/unused video game stuff, it just has this intrigue about it when you're used to the franchises being how they are now
This story I feel has potential for a reimagining. That box art… art is really good. That kinda off putting villain design and the concept of a Mario game no one remembers is a decent launching point. I personally wouldn’t go the route of hyper realistic blood and jumpscares, but just a sense that something is wrong. Levels with odd theming, going by that world map maybe a polluted lake level with a bunch of dead fish and some kinda creepy toxic thing near the bottom? A blend of reused Mario World assets with new assets that just don’t quite fit. Look at the phenomenon on “every copy of Mario 64 is personalized” or B3313, people love nostalgic games that are just… off As you said, a lot of Nintendo horror is like 99.99% fun and colorful game and then BAM the Dead Hand for no reason. Mix that with an actual designed build up of tension and uneasiness, odd design choices that might seem fine to its adult developers not realizing how sensitive 7 year olds can be… It’s all there. And with how easy Mario World rom hacking is to make up some screenshots someone out there can probably make a pretty decent creepypasta. I might take a crack at it if I can find the time.
Like eauygh would he obsessed with peach and wants everything about her like bowser is in love with peach but eauygh would be OBSESSED like a stalker and trying to get his hands on her
The iceberg says Eeyagh is trying to do some kind of sacrifice to the moon. His castle features a looming red one, but when you reach the end he's already left with Peach. You then use the infinite power star to launch yourself to the surface of the red moon, and Eeyagh confronts you as a massive winged serpent. Inside his jewel is Peach, which you need to shatter to free.
Blatant creepypasta elements aside this feels like it could've very easily been a Nintendo-Rareware collaboration. A fairly normal Mario adventure with a spooky theme and that slight kick of edge that Rare brings to the table, and the character of Eeyagh in particular could stand right up there with Wizpig as one of those goofy but oddly imposing villains they're so good at making.
This is a very interesting Mario Horror. I think the two are likely not from the same creator, given the forum post has a lot more to it and is more comedic in tone (really only faltering with that weird Peach having their skull biten off thing, though I guess it is the ending so I guess its a shock to get you back to reality). It reads like a traditional Video game creepypasta if from the perspective of an AVGN clone, and I find that a really funny concept I wonder what a this would look like if made Nintendo quality, I think the Yoshi would be possible, its similar to the spitting fruit juice that the Yoshi do in Mario Sunshine. Also the maggot costume power up, its so stupid yet I can imagine it existing
Now I’m just imagining a hypothetical old AVGN episode where he reviews a random SNES game with all of the generic creepypasta tropes in it. But the Angry Nerd isn’t even scared by it and just complains about it like it’s a regular game. And then scary version of main character of game with the generic Sonic.exe eyes shows up at his door or something.

After the night that I posted this, I kind of got interested in doing a revised story for Mario Nights so I have decided to post it here To fill in the void of a second mainline Mario game for Super Nintendo while resources were taken by Super Mario 64 and Yoshi's Island, Nintendo licensed the IP to a currently unknown developer outside of Japan similar to their previous work with Phillips and The Software Toolworks. The result was Mario Nights, a game that was canceled late into development and was one of the final nails in the coffin for Nintendo contracting their most important IPs to other companies for many years. While a build has yet to be found, a mock-up box made late into development and some interviews with former Nintendo employees and playtesters have given us some details. The game was made to be a cheaper alternative to Mario 64 to be released sometime between 1995-1997 and revolved around Mario going into the Night Kingdom to save Princess Peach and various citizens of the Mushroom Kingdom from the treatening mysterious entity that rules over this new kingdom known as Emperor Eeyagh, seemingly returning that theme from Super Mario Bros 1 and The Lost Levels. Very few previous concepts from previous games have been noted to have appeared. Instead of the usual themes for worlds, many of them are dark woods and grimey cities, with a noted mountain level with a weird face. One thing to note about the levels is that many interviewees noted an "odd amount" of ones where you have to use a flashlight. No enemies from the normal games appeared, instead the ones used have been noted to be things like worms, spiders, and weird goblin-looking creatures. The Mushrooms and Fire Flowers returned like they usually do, but but two power ups are known to be a maggot suit, and a jelly blob, which, through sheer coincidence or not, actually ended up in Super Mario Bros Wonder as a Wonder Flower effect. Yoshis return, but with weird, unusual effects, the most noted being one where they spit acid on enemies. With this, power-up houses return in this game, however, they have been often noted to have a calming but eerie ambiance to them. While not being noted as bad, many Nintendo employees and playtesters noted being unnerved by it for reasons that were often hard to explain and was often hyperfixated on by people who were against the game. While this wasn't originally a problem, eventually, higher ups would experience this unnerved feeling and cancel the game. This, in particular, has been one of the most noted aspects of this game and has resulted in many fans calling Mario Nights "Mario's Majora's Mask." In the gaming community, it has become a highly sought-after and desired prototype due to many of these odd aspects. Maybe one day, there could be hope for tracking down a prototype of Mario Nights.
