This is the best Bathory album and you cannot change my mind
How is this better than Under the Sign?? This is more black & roll type, Under the Sign sounds like 90s Darkthrone. Way more ahead of its time
@@bernabefernandeztouceda7315 definitley not. under the sign is what hooked a lot of us and has a great catalogue but the replay value of this is infinitely better than s/t and under the sign.
also this sounds way more like darkthrone. fenriz even claims this is the "quintessential black metal album", and i think even euronymous talked about the influence of this album in an interview in 1992...
"if you want to experience Black Metal listen to The Return by Bathory - a lot" - fenriz
Just returned from a late evening walk here in central europe during one of those saharan dust wave seasons. I's a cloudy day but l could see the moon shine pretty clearly, with the yellow tint it immediately reminded me of the cover art of this masterpiece, gotta put it on again tonight l guess.
That dusty environment is so annoying omg.

All Evil bombs. The Wind of Mayhem is my favorite.
Bestial Lust, Possessed, The Rite of Darkness, Reap of Evil and Son of the Damned.
Perfect album to listen to when your really sick of BS and need to decompress.
Yes sir
try hitting the gym listening to this. Perfect combination
It’s an album that you can release a lot of stress I agree
Quorthon the king of blackNroll!
i don't really get sick of black sabbath
This album captures cold , dark and evil all in one. Every bathory song I feel like I can play in the background for ritual of sacrifice.

I have immense respect for this album. This is in my view, the first authentic black metal album, more inspirational than Under the Sign of the Black Mark, but somehow doesn't get the love it deserves.
I prefer this one to Black Mark and self titled. For me it kinda goes like, BFD, Return, then Black Mark for top 3. Have a soft spot for Hammerheart as well
I had to double check the username to see if this was my comment lmao
this one took awhile to grow on me but once it did i realized it's probably his darkest and most important work
I know everyones taste is different but the statement that "The Return..." is more inspirational then "Under the Sign..." is absolutely beyond me. The whole atmosphere on "Under the Sign..." is so dark and almost cineastic while "The Return..." is basically raw black metal with punk and Motörhead influences. The lyrics on the first two albums are more tongue in cheek teenager satanism while "Under The Sign..." has all these medievil athmosphere and almost poetic lyrics. Some songs on Under The Sign have a structure and dramaturgy that resemble the lyrics - for instance "Enter The Eternal Fire" its almost like a movie inside the listeners head. And the synth lines and intros on "Under The Sign..." create this eighties horror movie athmosphere that makes it unlike any other BM album.
@@hanshandkante5055 first one sounded like motorhead and venom but i'd listen again, lots of evil riffs and a dark vibe on The Return. I think the production is more murky and that's why it sounds more evil in some wayss. the drums leave a lot to be desired with the obvious mistakes but overall I think it's more evil than Under the Sign which I love as well
Perfect album for Halloween
Agreed
Rite of Darkness one of the most evil songs ever written
24:02 Heaviest riff ever. Fact.
also the best song on the album imo
Sure there's other extreme metal pioneers out there but no one did vocals quite like this before Bathory, Quorthon invented this style of screaming

This was the first record REALLY black metal in my opinion
I think their album octagon was the first and best.
@@Davidbrompton58 You are either a troll or an idiot. "The Return" came out 1985 and "Octagon" came out 1995, also Octagon is no Black Metal, so what the hell are you talking about?

@@quinnyg3651 UA-cam no longer shows the dislikes on my end
It is impossible that Quorthon was not influenced by anything to do this. He was a great man with a lot of ego.
Bathory's first three are literally Discharge, GBH, Motorhead and Maiden influenced all around
@@noentiendonothingI'd add Venom to that list.
@@timbuk1126 yup, you're right, venom played a big part in EVERYTHING extreme metal.
Crazy to see how metal and punk are constantly influencing each other
@timbuk1126 I do not hear the Venom influence.
Is there any specific songs you can recommend that would compare.

What is your point even? It has nothing to do with the matter you bring up.
It's all so beautiful... 🙂👍
...Reap Of Evil will always be my defining moment on this one...
under the sign of the black mark gets credit for what this album already did. this is fully formed black metal
Indeed, it is.
It's much better than Under the Sign, that's just fast
@@Jamesp1972 same with the self titled. it rules but its just sped up black thrash. this is different
Is this really black metal though? Maybe blackened thrash
This is Venom?
Jokes aside, Who gives a fuck who started it? Venom is an awesome band and so is Bäthory. Case closed.
Oh my Master! Thomas Börje Forsberg was an epoch-making musician... with a band that basically never existed... He created and launched Black Metal with his first three LPs recorded in a garage, he actually wrote and played the songs alone, because the band members were only on the album cover indicated. As he said: we just are a studioproject. "Ace" was a genius full of wild ideas, but at the same time he was one of the world's greatest illusionists. Rest in Peace!
Venom created BM deal with it
@@baalzagoroth4693 Venom never played black metal music. Occult context with weak trash metal.
I agree!@@MrDissidentsoul
Bathory is the first and truest black metal band. No one out-blacks or out-Vikings Quorthon.
@@technodrome Listen - people say this because NBM became the focus of attention in the early 90s when most people were teens. Older people remember the times before; i don't care if the N. scene copied Quorthon to the bone, it's up to them, but because of that, all the Gen-Y's consider Bathory the mother of all things evil. But the proto-concept was created in Geordie. DTFWI.
THIS is the best album ever recorded! Hail Quorthon! Hail Bathory!

Though I'm more a thrasher: this album is, was and will be genius! I remember the times this album was released. You didn't say "I listen to black.", "I listen to death.", "Ilisten to thrash." or whatever you f*** like. We just said: "I hear, love and live Metal!" And that's what it is about! METAL!!!!!! 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
Well, that's just because at that point genres weren't really established to categorize shit yet. Genres are a categorization tool, there's no need to take them too seriously like the man above.
Genau! In those days everything fell into just one category : Noise!
Then the "waves" started to be named and nowadays every Metalhead needs to be a surfer (?).
To me it's still all one category : My Life!
Absomotherfuckingloutley, there only ever was metal,
Now everything that isn't metal gets called metal,
80's was the decade of metal
@@michaelboyle5805 I hate how everything is classified in sub genres now. How would you even begin to categorize Bathory? Tomas created multiple sub categories of metal single handedly. Bathory was Black, Thrash and Viking Metal. Interestingly enough, the sub genres did do a lot of us a big favor, by allowing us to avoid certain genres altogether. Like Deathcore and Metalcore. I hate death/metal core break downs. And pretty much every band that fits in the ( We write our songs around slow, overly exaggerated
breakdowns) all fit into those categories lol. Pros and Cons I guess. Anyway, REST IN POWER TOMAS!

Esos solos de guitarra son tan agresivos y tan geniales.
I'm trying to think of how many metal vocalists back in the mid 80s did harsh growls like Quorthon. Jeff Becerra, Tom Angelripper, Mille Petrozza, Schmier,
still, I think Quorthon's style was nastier and more demonic than all of them!!!

Quorthon's style was quite unique til 87/88 when other bands started playing actual black metal influenced by Bathory anyway
