      @@thatguyalex2835 Climb rate is NOT high. Neither us the cruise speed, it's pathetic, a Honda Jet cruises faster and climbs faster while carrying 6/8 people at half the fuel burn (if you're willing to do 360 knots). The MIG 15 burns 300 gph but at least you look cool and can cruise faster than an airliner. The PC 21 is a modern equivalent of this trainer but it's propeller driven, so I'm not impressed. Also, I found a starfighter (Mach 2+) for 800k, so don't bullshit me about low purchase price

    Having restored and certified 9 of these and and owned one myself for a few years, I found the cost to be not quite so high. I paid around $4 per year for insurance. Liability only ($1M). No hull insurance. It's cheap enough to buy and restore another airframe. I paid $75K for mine. I shared a large hangar with other jets for $800/month. I also saved some $$ on condition inspections ("annuals") because I am also an A&P mechanic. However, the airframe and engine are very durable, so I never spent a lot on replacement parts. In addition, since the aircraft is in the Experimental category, you can manufacture replacement parts, as long as the A&P says that it's airworthy. Yes, fuel is the biggest operating cost, but you can fly it with a lower power setting on cross-country flights to save fuel. The biggest burn is when you're out doing aerobatics. I flew fighters in the USAF, but the l-39 is, indeed, a fun and easy jet to fly and will always rate a 10 at whatever airport it lands. BTW, not to be picky, but the moniker should be "jet fighter", not fighter jet. Would you say a P-51 is a fighter prop? Somehow, over the years, the terms got turned around.

    • @svenstock2963
      @svenstock2963 3 роки тому +34

      You obviously seem to know a few things about this. But I'm surprised by the fighter jet/jet fighter part. People call jet aircraft "Jets". They don't call prop planes Props. So we have "passenger jets", "Cargo Jets", "private jets".. would fighter jet just be the same as those?

    • @tomrodgers6629

      Thanks for the info, My dream still lives. By the way how much was it to get your mechanics license.

    • @beyondwhatisknown
      @beyondwhatisknown 3 роки тому +7

      Some people regard "jet"as a type of engine, and others see "jet" as a type of airplane. Also, some people think of "fighter" as a thing, and others think of "fighter" as a description. I can see how the order of terms would easily get switched around, and yet everybody would still be correct depending on which definitions they're using. And on top of that, the moment someone doesn't speak English, the rule of putting your description before the object you're describing goes out the window. In French, for example you say the thing first and then the description.
      I figure, since these jet fighters and fighter jets are completely international, there will always be uncertainty about the order of those two words.

    I've always dreamt of owning/operating a MiG-21 or Starfighter, as I've seen them go for sale in the 100k-ish range over the years. Would be neat to see a video on one of those. MiG-21 is a bit of a handful too. It doesn't quite have the "reach this AoA and you WILL die" factor of the 104, but the MiG is still a bit of an adventure to land. Both came from the era of peak difficulty to fly.

Later in the week, he forgot to lower the landing hear on his L-39 for a landing at Willow Run Airport. From what I recall, the rugged Albatross was lifted, had it landing gear lowered, and put through an inspection. The damage was mostly cosmetic and the L-39 soldiered on.

    I spoke to a pilot that owned one of these a few years back and he said they are great but the engines are all nearing the end of their lives and it is cost prohibitive to replace them so when his engine is done he's donating it to a museum.

    Your stats are a bit off , depends on which version. I picked up a 1996 VodoChody L-39 that was upgraded to L-39NG+ specs . De-tipped and wet wing , Genesys avionics , Garret Code 1 turbofan . Will do Mach .089 and 2000 miles with extra drop tanks . Also sports a twin 23mm cannon , unfortunately it has been pinned and welded . Just for looks . It is a blast to fly and will definitely pull 7g , it is rated up to 9g , however I am not . A brief 7g is my max , that was with an experienced Ex F-18 pilot to man the controls in case I passed out . Pressurized cabin and onboard Oxygen. 39,000 no problems.

    It’s almost like this plane could most likely also be able to take off and land from smooth grass and dirt runways so it could be a high speed option for anyone who is very wealthy and lives on a large remote property that has a runaway and hanger that could support such an aircraft! So it would make it possible for them to do day trips between their home and towns/cities with airports, even if they live close to a thousand kilometres away! :)

    If you want to equip your Jet with two AIM-9 Sidewinder, to get a true fighter jet, you have to pay another 500.000 $, which is as much as the jet itself.

    Most of these videos have convinced that short of winning the lottery in the 7 to 8 figure range, I'll never own and airplane. If I get there, I would like to own something like the North American Sabreliner that is owned by Michael Dorn (Worf from Star Trek Next Generation). It has the speed, altitude, and range to make it practical to fly cross country or fly cross Atlantic to Europe.

  • @dontbanmebrodontbanme5403

    Two things I'm stunned by: 1. the fuel burn for the cruise speed. Holy cow, you can get that with a used TBM 700 at 1/4th the fuel burn and 2. how cheap it is to operate. That actually doesn't make sense. If you're burning 160 gallons/hour in cruise, how is it only $131K per 100 hours/year? Then again, I've seen your other videos and everyone swears that your numbers are super accurate, so I'll take your word on it.

    • @CompleteWalkaround
      @CompleteWalkaround  3 роки тому +6

      Hi, because L39 insurance hangar and maintenance are less than the TBM. But the fuel is way more, they end up in the same ballpark in the end
