Man, also loooved The Church! "Under The Milky Way" was one of the most beautiful songs on the 80's and "Reptile" was great too. I never thought of the similarities, but Steve Kilbey's vocal delivery did share a sensibility with Ian McCulloch's even if they still sounded quite different.

I hope you'll get to "Never Stop" or "The Cutter" for some great up tempo pop, "Bring On the Dancing Horses" is moody and beautiful, "Nocturnal Me" is haunting and unique, "Bedbugs and Ballyhoo" is SO MUCH FUN with a most excellent bassline. And they did a great cover of The Doors' "People Are Strange" for the movie "The Lost Boys", featuring Ray Manzarek himself on keys. I will hopefully be seeing them live this spring, one of my favorite bands ever and I'm super excited.

Such a brilliantly diverse decade, the best in in modern music history, IMO. The 1950s to 70s had been building the experimentation, variety and importance of youth ("popular") music, but it all peaked in the 80s. The 1990s were quite good too, but by the turn of the century things had changed, mainstream tastes had narrowed, commerce had completely taken over, and I don't think we'll ever see the same variety and mix of anarchy, energy, creativity, anger, pain, thoughtfulness, fun and humour that the music of the 80s had in spades.

Robert Smith of the Cure was actually IN the Banshees for a time as their guitarist. He shows up in the video for their cover of the Beatles' "Dear Prudence." There was a whole era of, as you called them "dark" bands who were skirting the goth/pop/rock line during the 80s and I was all about every one of them. Love and Rockets is another band that I hope you'll get to. They sprung from Bauhaus, kind of the godfathers of goth, I guess you could say. "So Alive" and "No New Tale To Tell" were radio hits of theirs, but they go much deeper than that. Though less goth, you can put Depeche Mode into that category loosely, especially with some of their mid-late 80s material. You have no idea how thrilled I am to see these bands getting some recognition and love on your channel! This music was my LIFE all through high school and college, and I still listen to it today. Thank you from the bottom of my heart, seriously!

Variety shows in the 50’s and 60’s introduced us to music of our parents and then the rising rock groups. Still listening to new music, mostly alternative. Almost 74 and I avoid living in the musical past but you have taken me back in the most endearing way. And yes I was at Woodstock, but only Sunday morning until Monday morning leaving in muddy bell bottoms as Hendrix was playing The Star Spangled Banner. Hitched there with a NY Times reporter and hitched back to upstate NY with a car full of worn out teenagers. Keep up the positive energy.

Ian McCulloch - vocals/rhythm guitar; Les Pattinson - bass; Will Sergeant - lead guitar; Pete De Freitas - drums. Their first five albums were magnificent - and their debut, 'Crocodiles' (1980) was a standout. They went on a hiatus for a few years following the album this track ('Lips Like Sugar') appeared on (even replacing McCulloch as lead singer at one point!) but never managed to regain their earlier magic.

I loved Echo and the Bunnymen back in the day, one of my favourite 80’s groups and I hope you continue exploring their music. If you like a great guitar, haunting lyrics, catchy hooks and clear vocals, please do check out Suede (known variously as London Suede in the US). They were one of the early bands of the 90s that helped launch the new “British invasion” to the USA at the time. Similar to groups like Pulp and influencing other bands like Oasis and Blur. You’d really appreciate the guitar on hits like “Animal Nitrate”, “Trash” “shes in Fashion” “Beautiful Ones” and “Lazy” to name a few…..

Siouxsie from Siouxsie and the Banshees was also in a band called The Creatures - debut single was Kiss The Girl (main instrument was marimba), many other track including "Say". All of them a bit different to the norm. In addition should also check out the band The Mission - Tower of Strength

Yes!!! Finally listening to this one! If you have Sirius XM, listen to channel 33, First Wave, to get an education on this type of music. A deep-cut band from the 80s is Bronski Beat. Check them out.

How about some Psychedelic Furs in keeping with the New Wave era. You can't go wrong with "Love my way" or "Heartbreak beat" for some of those deep lyrics presented with the New Wave flair of the 80s. If you want to hear something hypnotic, check out the The Stone Roses and their song "I Wanna Be Adored" from the early 90s. Haunting music with simple lyrics that will cast a spell over you. The official video is the one to watch.

Thank you! Mac (Ian McCulloch) is my comfort voice. 💜 When I first heard the Bunnymen back in the early 80s, I went out and bought everything I could find. My love for them has only increased through the years. Nocturnal Me, Bedbugs and Ballyhoo, The Cutter, In the Margins, I Want to Be There (When You Come), and A Promise, and this one are a few of my absolute favorites of theirs. In the last few days, I was listening to The Cutter; and it brought me back to listening to it while in the car with my parents so many years ago (they’ve both been gone since the late 80s). It makes me so happy to see/hear you guys giving them a chance. I look forward to anything else that you react to. Thank you! 💜💜💜

You used the term 'mysterious' to describe their music. Interestingly enough, Ian McCulloch 's second solo album was titled "Mysterio". Loads of great music to be found there. Might I suggest "Heaven's Gate" and "Magical World"...

"The Cutter", "Seven Seas", "Dancing Horses", and "Ocean Rain" (and actually the whole Ocean Rain album too) would be some of my favorite suggestions, but there are soooo many more, too many to name.
