Debbie Harry took some time off to care for a seriously ill friend which many people said it would kill her career. After the person was finally successfully diagnosed and recovered she came back to singing. Blondie had broken up but they reformed and started recording again . She is truly a hero in my book.

Debbie Harry has always been one of those people you can't pigeon hole - she fits into no category b/c she's a category all her own. She's also a good person. One of the band members became seriously ill and she took time off her career to nurse him back to health. She's a hero! She's 79 years old now and still looks great.

Debbie Harry was a Studio 54 gal and embraced the whole New York heroin scene of the 70's. She became good friends with Andy Warhol and he did a series of prints of her and painting of her which sold for £US 5.9 mill in 2012. She has lived one hell of a life (she was also a Playboy Bunny) and is still going strong today. Yup, Blondie aren't a disco group... it was only this one song that became a big hit. They also had #1 hits with rap in Rapture, reggae in The Tide Is High, they mixed in a lot of different styles. Debbie Harry has also acted throughout her career including the original Hairspray movie. She influenced Madonna for sure. The band Blondie stopped after 1982 mainly due to health problems of guitarist Chris Stein who was her romantic partner and she took care of for several years while he recovered. Debbie did release some solo albums and then the band had a successful comeback in 1999 with a new album and hit single with Maria.

I would not call it fading out, but one thing that people fail to point out is that Debbie was older when her and Blondie became popular. Ironically she was 33 (same as Ren) really when it starting to rise. She was in her mid to late 30's when she was full fledged star. I think this important to note since she took also time out to care for her then boyfriend who had a rare autoimmune condition. She also tried a solo career after the success of Blondie's Autoamerican Album. Her solo career wasn't that successful, but got off on the wrong foot by having many record stores not selling her album due to the front album photo. I truly believe if she started hitting big 10 years earlier, then we would all be talking about her differently and she would have hit the right style of music.

Blondie was an alt punk band in New York in the late ‘70s, regularly playing at legendary club CGBG’s (music history in a dive bar). Lead singer Deborah Harry and her partner and lead guitarist with both visionaries interested in all kinds of music. They ventured into areas other bands wouldn’t have bothered with and were excepted for their sincere appreciation of and interest in the music and style. One of New York’s kings of the very early rap scene worked with them on Rapture, he’s the unique gentleman in white hat & tales in the video. They both knew that getting the music on the radio through Blondie would open the door to other artists like The Sugar Hill Gang. She also opened the door to mainstream radio playing reggae with The Tide is High. Her huge movie hit Call Me gave Blondie the freedom to create their second album which shocked the hell out of the label. They didn’t want to release it but to sing Blondie in a bidding war they were given creative control and guaranteed release. The label tried dropping it without promotion but Blondie were club scene royalty and the music was played, radio picked it up and then it was hit after hit.

"Harry revealed the phrase “Heart of Glass” came out of an attempt to get rid of a vulgar lyric. “Back when it was called ‘The Disco Song,’ pretty much all I said was, ‘Once I had a love, it was a gas. Soon turned out, it was a pain in the ass,'” she recalled. “It didn’t quite work well, so that’s when we came up with the line, ‘Soon turned out, had a heart of glass.'” Despite this lyrical change, Blondie still used the phrase “pain in the ass” near the end of the song."

I so had a crush on Blondie (Debbie Harry) in the 1980's, I was in my early teens at the time.
Other great songs she did was "Call Me", "The Tide is High", "One Way or another", "Rapture".
She also was an accomplished actress, she was terrific playing a Witch in the "Tales from the Darkside" the movie 1990.
Take note she also played in Videodrome (1983) with James Wood.

You have to see Blondies more edgier stuff. I was so lucky to see her in the late 70's, I think I was about 14 and snuck into a club with my older sister to see some of the punk bands and was introduced to Blondie's sound, I was mesmerized, as a girl I hadn't seen anything like her. She was holding that stage and all the punks in her hand. She's that rare kind of gal that women love and relate to and men lust after 😊
All of their songs were hits, their first two albums were brilliant especially Parallel Lines every song hit it out of the park. I remember wearing it out, playing it over and over between my Ziggy Stardust and AbbA to name two (I had eclectic tastes lol).
She and the band did glastonbury fairly recently, she's an absolute legend, she never went away, slowed down but still going strong.

This was Blondie's first big mainstream hit. The album Parallel Lines had other hits on it -- check out "Hanging on the Telephone" and "One Way or Another." But their earlier albums were great too, with songs like "Denis, Denis" and "X-Offender." "Rapture" and "Call Me" came later.

Cool reaction and its great that a younger generation is discovering Blondie. Heart of Glass has been used in many adverts, movies and TV shows. The band is still going, a new album is due this year. Check out their song ATOMIC or DREAMING. Been a fan since 1978, they are a genre busting band such is their musical genius. Enjoy discovering them, dig deep 😎

I'm 42 but grew up listening to alot of the music you've been reviewing lately and this music has stuck with me more thru the years than much of the music from the 2000 on has. My mom was absolutely CRAZY about this song when it was popular. At the time I was kind of like, "Eh, it's okay," (maybe because my MOM liked it so much). Listening to it again now through all these reactions, I appreciate what an amazing song it is, both vocally and musically.
The last part of the song where she says, "pain in the ass" was the album version of the song; you didn't hear that on the radio, it just ended with all the high notes. That's probably why it didn't show up in the lyrics you brought up.

This was a disco hit by Blondie back in the late 70's... They were originally a rock band that came out of the NYC indie scene (the songs 'One way or another' ... 'Sunday girl' ... 'X offender'...) and as they broke commercially, they experimented w/ more diverse influences... They had a reggae song ('The tide is high')... pop songs ('Dreaming' ... 'Hanging on the telephone')
However, Blondie encountered rapid commercial decline by the early 80's and broke up soon after... Debbie Harry brought Blondie back together in the 90's and delivered a surprise hit single in 1999 - 'Maria'... which sounded like nothing from Blondie's past.

Her spreading the new "rap" genre with 'Rapture'... was iconic. IMO she was the 1st Lady of the late 70s/early 80s. While I was in vocal classes... I just wanted to be her! Once I started co-hosting karaoke, I was able to "be" her. This is a killer track - I finally hit my "mark" on this one. Her range and effortless vocals were stunning

I was 8 or 9 when I first started hearing Blondie hit . I was trying to place the name of "Rapture" Her lines were a little odd to me. Rapping about monsters eating cars? Very unique, even for a disco girls first attempt at rap. I preferred The Pet Shop Boys "West End Girls" or even T'Pau's Rhythmic Speaking that they creatively layered in front of, behind and over the more traditionally sung verses on their hit "Heart & Soul" as these sounded less gimmicky to my preteen ears. Two of my favorite Eighties call backs. "Call me" and "One Way or Another" are my favorites from Blondie.

Deborah Harry is an enduring icon. I saw her perform live and up close ten years ago at the age of 68 and she still had the voice and the X factor and the crowd was absolutely wild for her. Her music - both with/as Blondie and under her own name - is extremely well known from coast to coast and all over the world. In the 70s and 80s NYC revolved around her!
