Tip #4.5 - Don't have a magnetized screwdriver? Find a decently strong magnet, and rub the screwdriver, in the same direction, for several strokes, over the magnet for something in a pinch. *reads further in the comments* Of course..
It all depends on the strength of the magnet used. If you use a strong one it lasts a while. Also, magnetism is achieved when all molecules are aligned or something. If the screwdriver is banged up, thrown around, and generally put through abuse it will lose its magnetism. When I did this, the magnetism lasted for the life of the screwdriver. Got weaker of course, but it always held the screws.

Anti-static bags are not conductive, you can use a multimeter on it and it will show infinite resistance. You can build a computer and power it on the Anti-static bag, it won't don't any harm. But it won't provide Anti-static protection, as the component need to be sealed inside in order to form a Faraday cage.

PROTIP: Swipe a magnet from the base of the screwdriver shaft to the tip of the screw driver 30 times, slowly twisting the screw driver, this will magnetize your screw driver !
Okay about the thermal paste if you didn't know this already I feel bad for you... it's like you squeezed the whole bottle of ketchup (or Mayo, or mustard, or other) on a hotdog... just don't do it

really enjoyed this, a buddy of mine was a smart ass in collage when his instructor asked if there was a wrong way to put in ram. his reply "it only fits one way" he was called a smart ass for it
Static wont be a big issue if you don't vigorously rub yourself against rough surface. The only thing that you have to be extra cautious is putting the processor on the right position and not touching the sensitive motherboard processor socket.
+Slendddr True, most of today's games don't need more than 8GBs of ram to run, but 12 or even 16 GB of RAM *is* the mainstream at this point, and for good reason, that is the os and a couple or maybe even a few games as well as a browser etc running in the background, oh, did i mention the SSD RAM cache? I do agree 8GB is enough, but *some* games can use 6GB *on their own* which usually drives the os into using virtual ram, which in turn makes it worse because HDDs are really low speed, if you have an ssd, great, but it then uses up the amount of writes your ssd has, yes it does have a lot of writes, but you could use more right? Anyway, my point is, 8GB of ram *is* enough, but 12/16GB would be welcome even on today's low-end laptops.
Okay, one REALLY important tip many forget: Make sure your casings mounting points for the motherboard, where you screw it in, line up with the corresponding holes on the motherboard. If your motherboard has 6 holes and your motherboard has 4, its not a problem as long as they line up and you get a firm connection. Whats really bad though is if your motherboard has 4 holes, and the casing has 6, and they are made out of metal, and touch the backside of your motherboard, where there are circuts, and essentially youll end up shorting out your motherboard. It happened to me once and i couldnt figure that out for the life of myself at the time, however no lasting harm was done.
About magnetic screwdrivers: Excellent tip! I picked up a screwdriver magnetizer/demagnetizer from my local big box home improvement store for about $3 and it saved me having to buy any other new tools.
+DarkSamuraiHD Thermal paste is a very high heat conductive paste that is used between two objects (usually a heatsink and a CPU/GPU) to get better heat conduction. It fills in all those microscopic imperfections on the heatsink and CPU/GPU that can trap air in them and cause a loss in the heatsink’s performance. Air is a very poor conductor of heat. Thermal Interface Materials (TIM) can be up to a 100 times greater conductor of heat than air.
Here is a tip if using an old case. Make sure the only grommets on the case, match the holes in the motherboard. If a grommet is in the wrong place, it could short out the motherboard when it contacts the back of it. Almost learned this the hard way, but did a bit of research before applying power.
So for the static thing, I have a bunch of boxes around my house. Could I make small segmented platforms, set them on my carpet and stand on those while I work, that way I don't have to plug in the power supply and ground myself every few seconds? I'm fairly certain that where I'm working, there are no outlets anywhere nearby, so the power supply option would be a problem.
Linus, as someone who has never built a pc, and someone who didn't know that you had to match parts together when looking to purchase them, I can confidently say I need your tips, and Im sure everyone else would love some Linus tip as well.
To add to the bit about applying thermal paste on the CPU. I found it to be useful to spread the thermal paste with an old gift card or something with a clean, smooth, flat surface. That way you can remove excess thermal paste if you did in fact put too much as well as ensure thermal paste isn't seeping over the sides of the CPU when you install your CPU fan/cooler.
So my brothers got this friend... whose friends pc wasn't working, but thing is he'd just put it together and it was all new, so he asked my brothers friend for help but well... yeah he put thermal paste all over his motherboard...9-9 it never stood a chance. rip in pepperoni mobo...
magnetic screw drivers can be annoying sometimes. Just get a good set of regular screw drivers and a magnetiser. this will aloow you to give the screw driver a small magnetic pull when you need it and remove it when you don't. also you can use any strong magnet you have around the house to magnetise a screw driver.
I have never built a pc myself because my parents didn't want me to have a pc because they apparently got viruses all the time but I think that is complete bs at least according to my experience, and yes I have a mac but it's become a dinosaur by now. I don't even know what kind of case I should get and how I should know what parts fit where and stuff like that.
RafaGamer67 holy shit an add on to send emails?! this will make sending emails so much easier and faster. oh wait there's more. There's even a cool cursor that looks like a kitty, I'll get that too. virus. virus. and virus.
I have one question and that question is, soon I am going to build a pc and I am choosing to build it over a tiled floor and I was wondering if that is ok.
im just about to do my first build but im not sure what motherboard to get. this is the rest of my parts: cpu - i5 7500 gpu - gtx 1060 6gb fan - cooler master hyper212 evo ram - Kingston HyperX Fury Red 8GB (1 x 8GB) DDR3-1866 power supply - Corsair Builder 500W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX hdd - Toshiba 2TB 3.5" 7200RPM ssd - Sandisk SSD PLUS 120GB 2.5" case - Cit F3 White & Black id really apprieciate any feedback
If you don't have a magnetic screwdriver and you want to make one, all you need is a medium to strong strength magnet. All you have to do is take your magnet and rub it down the shaft of your non-magnetic screwdriver towards the tip. Do this about 30 times using a swift motion and rotate the screwdriver after each stroke. Once you've done that the screwdriver will be magnetised. Not as much as and actual magnetic screw driver but enough to hold 2 or 3 screws and pick them out of tight spaces.
What if the ram i installed it properly but the ones that tighten it up doesn’t flick and i have to pull it up aswell? Cause i had to change the ram slots because it was put in the wrong place.
what if the ram slots are all the same color I saw you had black and blue my MB has all 4 black, does that mean they all run on the same channel or do I have to look up were to put the ram?
I'm building a gaming pc, but my room has carpet. The desk will be made of wood. Could I still have in to the wooden desk or will I need to put cardboard under it?
Just remember stock paste doesn't take long to weld the CPU to the cooler so the CPU will get ripped out of the socket when you remove the cooler later which could cause damage. It's also harder to clean off than after market paste.

Okay, one REALLY important tip many forget:
Make sure your casings mounting points for the motherboard, where you screw it in, line up with the corresponding holes on the motherboard.
At first in the intro i thought he was gonna cry. Lol.
A last thing on tip 1: be naked
Anton Helsgaun technically you’re right
Oh linus. How much humans change over the years. Your voice doesnt peak as much anymore.
About magnetic screwdrivers: Excellent tip! I picked up a screwdriver magnetizer/demagnetizer from my local big box home improvement store for about $3 and it saved me having to buy any other new tools.
I think the most common mistakes about RAM is the incorrect placement of the sticks into A and B slots.
(I know nothing about computers) why use thermal paste ?
so your cpu doesn't burn your house down
+DarkSamuraiHD It helps to transfer the heat from your CPU to the sink's plate.
Helps keep them pearly whites
To avoid fire hazard (jk, it: 1.helps make solid contact, 2.Is very conductive) d.m me for any if he questions
Fun fact: You can magnetize your own screwdriver by taking a fairly strong magnet and rubbing it up and down the front and back of a screwdriver tip!
That's good and all, but who has magnets lying around?
Jeffrey levouski I do.
I hate when I accidentally get DDR2 memory for my DDR1 board
Instructions not clear, posted shitty comment in original way.
Can I just touch my case not a plugged in psu?
Just the tips?
Not very helpful for the female viewers
They prefer the whole shaft too
Lennie Godber mmmmm just the shaft ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
"Lennie"
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
You are getting five tips. Shouldn't that add up to one shaft?
***** what are talking about?
5 tips doesn't add to whole shaft.
oh wait..
ooh
Lennie Godber ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Linus, as someone who has never built a pc, and someone who didn't know that you had to match parts together when looking to purchase them, I can confidently say I need your tips, and Im sure everyone else would love some Linus tip as well.
+megamanturbo32 I can help if you have questions
Just the tip *giggity*
boi
“You’re gonna have a bad tiiiimmee...”
(Hears Megalovania in the distance)
1:10 what about pipes? I was recently doing stuff in my computer and i used the tap..all pipes int he house are grounded right?
magnetic screw drivers can be annoying sometimes. Just get a good set of regular screw drivers and a magnetiser. this will aloow you to give the screw driver a small magnetic pull when you need it and remove it when you don't. also you can use any strong magnet you have around the house to magnetise a screw driver.
POV: you're looking for a comment from the last few months
if you have no magnetic screwdriver, put a fridge magnet on the shaft of a normal one!
Dionysus The site PC part picker should help with that a lot.
You could look on youtube for builds around your budget or you could go on pc part picker like Ashton said
+Dionysus pepole only get viruses if they are dumb and belive in everything
RafaGamer67 holy shit an add on to send emails?! this will make sending emails so much easier and faster. oh wait there's more. There's even a cool cursor that looks like a kitty, I'll get that too.
virus. virus. and virus.
^^^^
1:19 is there anything i have to do before if im building on a wooden floor?
I have one question and that question is, soon I am going to build a pc and I am choosing to build it over a tiled floor and I was wondering if that is ok.
my pc : p4 1.8GHZ single core
512Mb ram of DDR2
20GB HARDDRIVE
AND I STILL FUCKING PLAY GTA 3 AHA :v
But can it run Minesweeper?
Z-Scart i would say hell yeah ...
Sir Lance Goodthrust wdf o.O
+Z-Scart Of course LOL.
Update to Windows 10. Your HDD will be filled with Windows 10 OS.
LinusTechTips Just the turnip!
Just rub a magnet on the screwdriver and it will be magnetic
4:58 What motherboard is that? I wanna make a blue/black build...
here's one: get a portable CD drive for driver installation.
drivers gets installed automatically on windows 8. most drivers at least.
why not USB? Most of their build guides doesn't even include an optical drive
hblu What's a CD drive? I'm 12 I've never heard of this "CD"
win 7 did not come with drivers preinstalled for my motherboards Ethernet port.
stopaskingformyname CD = Cadium, it's a chemical element
yaga
just because you're not verified you have been left in the hell of comments
be verified if you want attention, mr youtuber
i was naked when i built my pc.
What about wearing a metal ring in regards to voiding static electricity?
so while building we should keep our parts on the static mat? is it?
What if u are on tile with a wooden table in a hot climate ? Do I still have to ground myself
im just about to do my first build but im not sure what motherboard to get. this is the rest of my parts:
cpu - i5 7500
gpu - gtx 1060 6gb
fan - cooler master hyper212 evo
ram - Kingston HyperX Fury Red 8GB (1 x 8GB) DDR3-1866
power supply - Corsair Builder 500W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX
hdd - Toshiba 2TB 3.5" 7200RPM
ssd - Sandisk SSD PLUS 120GB 2.5"
case - Cit F3 White & Black
id really apprieciate any feedback
If you don't have a magnetic screwdriver and you want to make one, all you need is a medium to strong strength magnet.
All you have to do is take your magnet and rub it down the shaft of your non-magnetic screwdriver towards the tip. Do this about 30 times using a swift motion and rotate the screwdriver after each stroke.
Once you've done that the screwdriver will be magnetised. Not as much as and actual magnetic screw driver but enough to hold 2 or 3 screws and pick them out of tight spaces.
is my pc setup any good?
cpu: core i9-9950x (20 cores, 40 threads) clocked at 5.1GHz
gpu: 4x 1280 ti sli
ram: 1tb of ddr5 ram
Motherboard: ASUS Z480 ULTRA GAMING w/Sound Blaster Pro 999 kilahertz
Monitor: 6 Dell 8k G-sync monitors connected using HDMI 3.9
HDD: 20TB 10000RPM and a 40TB 7200RPM
SSD: 5x 4TB Intel PCIe SSDs
PSU: 17000w Corsair
I find that blue tack holds on screw. to the screw driver, just great to insert the screw into them hard spots , and to left out too
What if the ram i installed it properly but the ones that tighten it up doesn’t flick and i have to pull it up aswell? Cause i had to change the ram slots because it was put in the wrong place.
what if the ram slots are all the same color I saw you had black and blue my MB has all 4 black, does that mean they all run on the same channel or do I have to look up were to put the ram?
so you can use a magnetic screwdriver when you are close to your motherboard?
Does static matter if you are working on a wooden floor?
I'm building a gaming pc, but my room has carpet. The desk will be made of wood. Could I still have in to the wooden desk or will I need to put cardboard under it?
Just remember stock paste doesn't take long to weld the CPU to the cooler so the CPU will get ripped out of the socket when you remove the cooler later which could cause damage. It's also harder to clean off than after market paste.
where on the psu do i clip the band to
I didn't quite understand, was I supposed to hook up the heatsink to the ssd or not?
do i have to toutch the power supply every time is take a step?
Just every couple of minutes is fine.
is it safe to attach a bare copper wire on the power supply and then wrap it around your wrist?
So what if you're working on a tiled floor and glass table? just curious if different surfaces are safer, obviously carpet is shit.
I wonder what type of cpu cooler they use in their thumbnail?
stupid question, but if I wrapped electrical tape or something around my fingertips would that reduce the chance of shocking my parts?
Thank you from the King of Newbies. Somebody in these 3,000 comments must have asked this by now, but could you make another video like this? Perhaps you could call that one 10 Important Tips for PC building. PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
NCIX is no longer functional unfortunately, Linus Tech Tips has a video on that
RecklesFlam1go, do you happen to know the name of that video? Thanx.
My house's floor is a big carpet, do I need the bracelet? Like I could always just touch the power supply often but I don't know if it would be enough. I'll build my first PC soon!
So far I have a motherboard, ssd, hard drive, networking card monitor, case, gpu, CPU, ram, thermal paste, and CPU cooler, do I need anything else
PSU, unless it comes with the case. Likewise with the optical drive
