  • Episode 61 is really exciting, featuring an interview with the amazing knitwear designer Norah Gaughan. Vogue Knitting has just published a book which showcases a collection of her designs spanning from 1987 until the present. Norah stands out as being very much on the cutting edge of innovative designers. This comes through in her garment shapes, her crazy and beautiful cables and the unusual constructions that she keeps coming up with. Norah also really enjoys teaching and she's great at explaining the more advanced topics and techniques. Norah does this in our interview, so you're in for a real treat! On top of this, we go to Scotland for a special 'Meet the Shepherdess' segment, we feature a design by Laura Aylor in New Releases and we show off two finished garments in Bring and Brag.

    Oh gosh! Norah Gaughan has been my favorite designer since the '90's! I realize how much that statement ages me, but that's okay. Worth admitting just to say thank you so very much for featuring her.

    Loved this episode again. While listening I happened to be working on a swatch of my own variation of a cabled panel. Not aware of the inspiring treat I would get in the interview with Norah Gaughan. I was in awe of her creativity. Not pretending anything, I could so understand her process of creating and discovering the next possibility. Very, very inspiring. Thank you for enabling us to meet all these creative people through your indepth interviews!

    here I finally am! I started watching you guys in my exam period in June and am finally caught up!! (I did take a break of a month) It has been lovely having you with me when I knit and see all the lovely progress you make! If only I could be a project knitter... I have so many WIPS. I am a young knitter from Belgium and I stream my knitting on the livestreamingplatform Twitch. I take a lot of inspiration in seeing madeleine try on all these knittingchallenges. Thank you for all the information and months of bingewatching.
    PS: I've been wanting to say this for 3 months: I notice there is a lot of wrong usage of the word podcast on youtube XD podcast is audio only, vodcast is audio and video.
    Lots of love

    The Fruity Knitting podcast is never just a 1.5 hour of can't-put-it-down podcast viewing for me. I always go away from it wanting to check out a book, or the designer's patterns, or simply oggling at the little details Andrea & Andrew put into something like the patreon credits at the end. The fading in and out of the names, the colours chosen, the borders around the lettering, the music chosen, it is all so well thought out so that we can enjoy such a pleasureable hour. Thank you very much. Off to check out Norah Gaughan's "Knitting Nature" book and the wonderful inspirations from nature which is all around us.

    I have just discovered you and you have become my favorite podcast! I kept pausing to go to Ravelry and favorite a pattern or designer. I am new so these are goal patterns. I also went to Amazon to add books to my wish list😁 I am a new knitter. I learned to knit whilst living and working I Stuttgart. I am a Native American and will be heading home soon. Excited to bring my new hobby home and have you at the other end of my ipad😁

    The interview with Norah Gaughan was particularly interesting to me. It was the Yarn Harlot who introduced me to her as a designer, probably about 10+ years ago, now. At the time, it was disappointing then to find that most of her patterns were not available to me in Europe, as Berrocco would not ship them here, so I was never able to get hold of them - until more recently, the wonder that is Ravelry made them more accessible! I must admit I have never knit one of her patterns so far but have a couple in the pipeline, so it really was great to have this segment in your show! Thanks!

    Fantastic episode. Just the highest kind of quality in every single minute. Thank you so much, Andrew and Andrea. I've admired Norah Gaughan's imagination and free thinking for many years. She's one of my knitting heroes! It was such a pleasure to see how she works as she designs new stitches. Good luck with the Carbeth decision. It does look fantastic on both of you. Beautiful work, Andrew! Joint custody truly isn't an option?

    I love Norah's book Knitting Nature also Knit Fold Pleat Repeat. As for charts...ugh. I have been an avid reader all my life. When it comes to charts in knitting, I can follow simple chart symbols but if it's more complex, I write out the pattern the old fashioned way in Rows.

    Hey! Sewers tip: when pinning down two things together, put your pins perpendicular to the end. In that way it will greatly help withe the straightness of your stitch line. (In the cardigan, you can see some little waves where the pins are when basting. When you put the pins perpendicular, there are much less of those waves, leaving you with a neater edge for the basting and therefore for the final stitching as well.)

    Thanks for your podcast with Norah Gaughan! I have the Cable Source Book but really haven’t yet spent time looking at it. Now, I can’t wait to get started! Much if my knitting time is similar to hers, always thinking of ways to change something, to make it more suitable to my shape, to make it more “mine”!

    Oh gosh Andrea, the very first time I saw a sweater by Norah I was so bowled over by how fantastic it was that it inspired me to want to knit like her and I still have the copy of the pattern and it actually was in a Vogue Knitting. With all the ups and downs of my life I never got around to knitting that intensely feminine cardigan but I think I should commit myself to making it next year.
    Madeline should get the cardigan but you can make another for yourself, in green. That way the two of you don’t get confused over whose one it is 😄

    For the decision about the owner of the cardigan, I instantly thought of a solomonic solution. Just cut it in half ;) But you could have alternating weeks... Or months. Or each of you could knit a copy of it for the other, than you'd have 3 of them.

    Loved your 'fan girling' of Norah, "Just one more question....Just another quick question...." super cute, and totally understandable as she's a genius! I'm knitting one of her designs for the knit for your man KAL. Also, a big well done to Andrew for his cardigan triumph. Thank you for letting us get to know her and the techniques that she has developed. I now understand why her work was so appealing to me. As for Andrew's sweater, I think it is so sweet. I also love the idea of a tougher wool for a garment for outdoorsy type people :-) Great piece. Thank you.

    Question: Why do they put these colors on the butts of the sheep? I see some bright yello and pink... I presume it is a code but... what does it means?

    • @FruityKnitting
      @FruityKnitting  6 років тому

      It is a code. During the mating period, the tup (ram) is fitted with a colored "crayon" or just smeared with "raddle" on his chest. The color is changed over time, say, each week, and this allows the farmer to recognize when each ewe was "covered" by the ram. The farmer can then divide the ewes based on the expected lambing date, which helps in managing the ewes during the lambing period. If there are several rams at work, then different colors can be used to indicate which ram has covered each ewe, although I think that is less common.

    • @FruityKnitting
      @FruityKnitting  6 років тому

      Usually it shows that the ewe has been tupped by the ram. This can help them know when lambing will start and if the ram is doing his job properly. Other times after the ultrasound it show how many lambs the ewe is going to have so the Shepherdess can make sure a ewe with twins or triplets will get enough feed.
