Episode 55 has a decidedly Scottish flavour. U.K. Knitwear designer Di Gilpin is our feature interview guest. Di has had a fascinating and diverse career within the knitwear industry. She started in a small studio, on the island of Skye in the Hebrides, designing bespoke garments on commission and has ended up having her designs on the catwalk and published in Vogue Fashion.
Our new segment 'Meet the Shepherdess' showcases Fleece and Harmony. Kim and Jennifer, two sisters, left the corporate world and city life to raise sheep on a farm and with their mini mill they produce yarn from the fleece of their own and neighboring farms flock. The sister's are originally from Nova Scotia (this is the Scottish connection).
Andrea gives us a tour through Alice Starmore's beautiful book Glamourie, which is inspired by the local traditional stories of magical shape shifting animals in the Outer Hebrides. We take you on a short hike to the magnificent coast line at Muckle Roe on the west coast of Shetland and update you on the progress of our own projects.

I am constantly amazed by the very skilled knitters & designers around the world. Thank you for bringing them to us. Looks like knitting is not in danger of dying out.
Andrea, your interviewing skill is incredible. You keep the story flowing so beautifully, by the questions you ask, and your responses.
Thank you, I try to do my best.
I really admire the way Andrea carries out her interviews, allowing the guest lots of time and space to express themselves.... another glorious inspirational podcast...thank you FruityKnitting🍑
Thanks for sharing the tip on counting cable rows. I really enjoyed learning about Jennifer and Kim and their farm (fellow Canadians).
Bravo! Loved your interview with Di Gilpin. What an interesting person.
I have tears of joy! Being a maritimer, and raised surrounded by natural wool and taught knitting as a child by skilled grandmothers, I cannot tell you how thrilled I am that you found us here in eastern Canada 🇨🇦. Keeping it natural😉....Lovely episode, thank you so much.
Great, wonderful, fantastic! Love the new "Meet the Shepardess" section. I hope it goes over well and you plan to keep it for some time.
Loved this episode! Thank you so much for introducing me to the lovely PEI ladies. It’s nice to know more small mills are opening in Canada. I know of another opening in Manitoba this year. It’s wonderful to see the wool industry returning.
~Betty, NT Canada 🇨🇦
Fabulous! as always....you two never disappoint 🐏🐑🐏🐑💞
Fantastic episode! Andrew, you need to look at early episodes and you'll see how much your knitting skills have progressed. It has been brilliant watching your progress. 😊
I loved the episode as I’ve loved all the other ones.....could have watched the lambs running around their pens and the mothers just eating and letting them around...... love it......
Fabulous episode! I really enjoyed learning about Fleece & Harmony. Of course, Di Gilpin is awesome!
I particularly enjoyed Di's interview about the Ganseys. I have already knitted two from Alice Starmore and found the elements Di described. Only the gauge was different. Thank you so much!
So nice to see Kim and Jennifer. They are the reason I watch your show!
I love the new segment Meet the shepherdess!
I loved this episode! The interviews were wonderful and full of creative information and inspiration. Keep up the great work!
Wonderful episode! What an inspiration Di Gilpin is. Thank you so much for introducing her to me.
Thank you! Another wonderful and inspiring podcast!
I loved this episode. Thank you Andrea and Andrew. I love cables and your sweater and the last cabled on Di’s designs is just beautiful and the cabled collar just amazing. Thank you once again. PilarK ❤️🇨🇴
What a fabulous and inspiring episode, thank you so much.
thanks for the tip about counting cable!!
I truly enjoy when you pick a maker to interview especially when they are from Scotland or Ireland. Their traditions are so beautiful albeit from necessity but made so beautifully all the same!! Thank you for your inspirations!!!
Wonderful interview with Di Gilpin - what an inspirational lady she is! Thank you for another fabulous episode (I am learning SO much!)
Thank you both for a truly amazing episode as always.. so interesting and fabulous!
Fantastic episode! Love the interviews, you have wonderful skills Andrea.
Another amazing episode. Thank you!
Thank you for Kim & Jennifer's Corriedale breed, which is the main breed here in the SE of South Australia near Mt Gambier. Its a fleece available for spinning.
Another wonderful episode! Seems like they get better and better, yet all have been wonderful.
We need a documentary on Di Gilpin! She has so much in her experience and life. I could have sat here and listened and listened. Awesome lady.
Loved hearing about the PEI girls and their new mill. And a big thank you to your wonderful guests for the discounts offered to Patreon supporters. So worth it to join.
Very inspiring and interesting informative episode, thank you !
Thank you for the interview with Di Gilpin. Had heard her name but had no understanding of her brilliance as a designer of knitwear. Knitting for the runway or the screen seems different from knitting something to wear at home. Thank you for the review of Glamourie as well. The designs are dramatic in a way that would lend themselves to a movie screen also.
Hello from Lower Austria! Ich want to thank you for your wonderful intelligent work! Your show is refreshing and full of information, wonderful pictures of beautiful landscapes, colours, yarns and very very good chosen pieces of music!! And this Episode was WOW! I loved it! And Di Gilpin is such a lovely personality! All what she says comes from her heart! I hope there will be many many shows with you in future! I am sure of it!
Thank you so much for your tip on reading the cable rows. It's something I've always wondered how to do!
What a fantastic episode, it is ingredible, I love your podcast. Thanks
Andrea, I love the multiple cables on your cardigan. The color is wonderful too. In my youth (I’m a senior citizen now) I wore rust, peach and apricot colored garments but orange was too bright with my carrot-colored hair. My nickname was Carrot Top. 😀
The Muckle Row hike is so beautiful.
Another beautiful video...thank you...
Thank you so much for sharing how to count rows when working cables! I’ve always struggled with that! ❤️
The glamourie book I agree is incredible. It's worth it to have just for the inspiration alone but of course the wearable patterns make it a must have.
looks like I am off on a lark in the very near future, I have been to Belfast MIni Mills it's about 95 minute drive I live in Schurman's Point just East of Summerside on Prince Edward Island. Excited for a bite of a wee drive to meet such interesting ladies.
Superb! Also, Andrew and Andrea, the Earth has taken a slant on its axis! Joji indicated in her last Journal that she is learning brioche!
I love this episode, laughed so much, the sheep, oh the sheep! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
HI Guys!! Just finished the episode-amazing!! I am so proud and happy to support your work bringing us all this podcast with the rest of our community. How is it that two people in Germany introduce me to neighbours in Prince Edward Island!!! I have to order some yarn and knit Kate's design as well. Can't wait to see the one you knit. Thanks so much for all you do. Happy Knitting to you both and Madeline!! Enjoy!! PS: Thanks so much for including the out-take from Fleece and Harmony!! it is just precious.
Hi Roxanne, yes the outtake was priceless! Glad you enjoyed the episode.
Oh that was so lovely, so inspiring. I need to slip out and check my gauge...
Wonderful episode. Lovely to hear about fellow Canadians in PEI. Thinking you could have had enough interview to provide content for 2 episodes. Some interviews need to be very in depth and cannot be shortened ;). So inspiring and informative. Good job.
Yet another brilliant episode including the surprise treat of a Di Gilpin interview. I saw her video about Gansey inspirations for her designs a year ago and put knitting Ganseys at the top of my bucket list. I'd love to see you interview Beth Brown-Reinsel someday Andrea.
Hello! I loved the episode! I love Sonia Delaunay too. She lived in Portugal in a short period of time. In Vila do Conde, a fishing village, with great sweaters and bobin lace too. Kisses from Portugal! Isabel Rodrigues.
Thanks Isabel, glad you liked the episode
Just beautifil! Thank you!
The yarn colour “Pampass “ is from Pampass grass in the 1970s was grown to indicate you were a swinger in UK 🇬🇧.
Love 💕 Sheila’s cardi. Di reminds me of a 1980s Art teacher .
I think it’s named after the place rather than the grass going by it’s colour.
As I have mentioned in the past, I am getting ready to introduce sheep to my 100% off grid homestead. Coodoes on the new segment, "Meet the Shepardess". Lots of good info! BTW: I thought I had locked in a deal on Shetland sheep, but then...he would only sell me rams! Thanks agsin, Vivian Ann on the side of the mountain in northeast Tennessee
I just finished reading "Glamourie":) I love the book.
Thank you!
Love this Episode and the new sequenze with the shephardess :-))). Liebe Grüße annette
I am new to the channel. Hello! I so enjoyed this... I must admit, I may have droolled some at times, specially with that amazing little jacket shown early during the video. Omg, I'd love to knit it in all kinds of colors! ♡
I have a book from the library at the moment which is by Alice Starmore, called Fishermen's Sweaters. Originally published in 1993 by Collins & Brown. There is a section on Fife Ganseys in there, with a pattern for a child's sweater. You could 'scale up' for Andrew's Gansey. We are often in Cellardyke and Kilrenny where Andrew's ancestors emigrated from. There is still a fish shop in Cellardyke called "J Doig" - maybe a distant relative?
How interesting, we love fish and chips (U.K. style)
I love the Glamourie book! So far I have knit ( from my handspun) the Raven cowl, and the small size Eagle wrap. I understand why she can’t do the patterns for the costumes, but the sweater back on the Cailleach costume is so great! I would love to be able to figure it out ❤️
Oh what a great tip for finding your way with cable rows...thanks so much... as to Andrew's lovely vest, I've bought the champers so just waiting now... no pressure, Andrew hahahahaha...pampas is a grass that has a golden colour. It grows here in Australia and isn't hard to grow. as to the amazing book, Glamourie, I would ask just who would WEAR or want the costume pattern if we are honest? I think they are glorious photos which are adjuncts to the story and then which inform the wearables. It's incredible. A huge achievement for Alice and the team. and I think the thing about the 'dream ' of having a business, no knitting can get done when you have a shop or a business and you live, breathe and EAT the business so no, i'll stick with buying someone's yarn and just keep running a business as a fantasy. :-) Thanks so much for a great show again.
Would you be willing to feature an Estonian or Latvian lace-knitter? Their laces, with all the nups, are unique in the world and don't often get shown. Thanks.
Have you come across the New Zealand show called World Of Wearable Art (WOW)? I think the museum is based in Nelson. It's brilliant
hello Andrea... can you advise me where i can learn to pick up stitches 'neatly' and properly.. ? is there an instruction somewhere.. thankyou ..I loved this interview with Di Gilpin..
I think Di Gilpin must have many more hours in her day than I do!
Yeah 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
First, I'm a new subscriber and I love your videos. I am an experienced knitter but I still learn new things. Second, could you please include a little section in your videos called "What I am Wearing" telling us what patterns both of you are wearing along with the artist name and where it can be obtained? That would be most helpful. In an earlier episode you are wearing a red cabled sweater with a wide neckline. It's the episode in which you interview Ann Budd. I love this little sweater and would like to make it. Thanks in advance for that information. It would be so helpful if you could include that information in future videos for us "have to have" knitters.
Hi Leigh, we have a section in our program notes called What we are wearing at fruityknitting.com. The red cardigan is an Alice Starmore design.
Thank you for answering. I actually own that book and pattern so I'm very happy!
Lovely episode. Is Andrea singing while you are showing your walk in Nova Scotia?

Or The Pampas are fertile South American lowlands that cover more than 750,000 km² and include the Argentine provinces of Buenos Aires, La Pampa, Santa Fe, Entre Ríos and Córdoba; all of Uruguay; and the southernmost Brazilian State, Rio Grande do Sul. Wikipedia
Gansey - The Norwegian word for sweater is genser. These two words are certanly releated. Interesting.
Pampas grass possibly?
I have around 40 per 10cm
I’ve got a ways to go, yet.
Well, nothing safe about stress.
