- Lucy Hague is the creator of stunning knitted cable designs based on Celtic and Pictish knotwork, and she features in our interview in Episode 62. We even include a short tutorial from Lucy where she shows her advanced cable knitting technique, which allows you to create two-sided cables. Lucy comes from Orkney, a small set of islands in the north of Scotland.
We keep to a northern islands theme for our other two guests. Jennifer Beale, our guest on New Releases, comes from St. Johns in Newfoundland, Canada, and shows us two of her cute lace and colorwork tops. And in Meet the Shepherdess we meet Meg from the Birlinn Yarn Company, based on the island of Berneray in the Outer Hebrides, off the north-west coast of Scotland.
Madeleine shares some good news and gives us a look at her woolen wardrobe, and we give you an update on our projects, all just before we head of to Shetland Wool Week!!!

I've been lucky enough to test some designs for her and was one of her Bain testers. I didn't realise how much work it took to design as the pattern was sooo easy to knit.
One of my first big knitting projects was a triangle scarf, I was able to create a fire on each side with the two-sided cables after reading Lacy Hague's blog. I made the cables on each side different colors over the garter stitch.

I loved the Lucy Hague interview and was fascinated by her reversible cabling technique with slipped stitches. I purchased one of her color work shawl patterns and can’t wait to start it. I choked up when you were sending off Madeline to school! It brought up wrenching moments of when my only daughter flew from my nest. We mothers do love our daughters so much.

Well done, Mom and Dad for raising such a poised, intelligent and beautiful daughter. She really is the best of you both. I know it's hard for all of you. I have had the sheer delight of knitting Lucy Hague's Linisfarne . Absolute thrill to see the pattern unfold and to "get it" I worked it in the Malabrigo that she used....you are correct, Andrea, the colours were not ones that would normally put together...but they work...beautifully! So many things learned in this project and am looking forward to knitting inside/outside cables! Imagine all of these skills and thrills are done with a piece of yarn and two needles!!

I have got to let you know I have been teaching an 11-year-old to knit and I had her watch (as homework) your Ep. 56 how to cable with no cable needle. THEN I was going to work with her during her next lesson and you know when we got together yesterday she had made a left cable bracelet WITHOUT a cable needle. Wow, she is a natural and a pleasure to teach!!! She only needs to see something once and she has it. Thank you for explaining things so clearly.

This was a very interesting podcast. It sounds very romantic living on a remote island in the glorious sunshine but I would imagine that in reality it is a very hard life especially dealing with the extreme weather conditions.
Don't forget we take our holidays in winter and go to Snowdonia.

Lucy is effectively double knitting the cables, like one does in Brioche. Normally you would have each stitch for the two sides alternating, but she has the stitches for the whole cable alternating. It's an interesting concept, which needs to be explored further.

I told you it’s easy enough Andrew 😀 There is an angle where to pick up the stitches so you don’t end up with holes that will have to be closed up. GOOD JOB!!!

you mentioned how the sweaters needed to be washed carefully, would you do a tutorial on how to take care of hand knitted garments and washing them, and how often to wash them? This would be very helpful. Thanks... I love your podcast! It's my favorite!

Dear Andrew and Andrea, Lucy's reversible technique strongly reminds me of the Windy Scarf by Martin Storey, which I knitted two of after having seen it on your show over a year ago. It's the same technique, just on both sides. The way Lucy explained it therefore made total sense to me, though I did really appreciate the video at the end. :D I think it's a great technique for knitters who are very good at "reading" their knitting. Lucy is using the normal slip stitch pattern in a new way.

I loved this so much. Lucy Hague is incredibly talented. As an artist, I have had Bane's knotwork books and and played with drawing it for years. I never thought about trying to knit it! It is hard enough to draw. (Request: I am a patron, but they never show my name on the video. Am I missing something?)

I'm a beginner Gaelic learner, not a fluent speaker, but I believe 'Traigh' is pronounced like 'try', but with the more rolled 'tr' sound.

Actually, no. “Tráigh” is the old Irish word for “beach” or “strand”. The modern version is “trá” and both versions are pronounced something like “traw”, but without the mouth actually changing into the “w” position. Irish spelling was modernized in 1958 and again in 2017.

A great show, once more. Andrea, your discussion about the jumper you're knitting for Andrew taps into a point that was recently discussed by Eric Lutz (rib magazine) on his podcast. When designers label sweaters as "unisex" or for women and men in their Ravelry page, are they really taking a sensible account of the differences in male & female body shapes? My experience of "unisex" patterns has always been a disappointment in terms of cut/fit. I admire you greatly for adapting a women's pattern, it can't be an easy task. (P.s do you change needle size between the stranded and non stranded sections? Or are you able to maintain an even gauge between the two without changing needles?)

DRONE FYI: I live in an isolated mountain area, and I find drones to be very intrusive. Not only do I feel spied upon, the drones are very noisy - much like a swarm of bees. I put up with all the inconveniences of being isolated so I can live in a peaceful environment.
I hope that you inform the locals before you “drone” them.

I truly enjoy this cabled series. I took a craftsy class www.craftsy.com/knitting/classes/infinite-cables/40680 and had a taste into these complicated cables. This is not for the faint of heart knitters.
