THANK YOU!!!! We rescued a tiny raccoon from a storm drain one night. 2 nights later he showed up on our patio with his mom and 3 siblings. They come regularly to visit us. :)

I can't get over how good you guys are with animals. I believe you really WERE led there to find it, because you're the kind of people who cared enough to take care of it. When I was about 12, we rescued a baby raccoon from a tree that had been hit by lightning (I guess the mother had run away or something). We ended up raising him for about 3 or 4 months...he was a very smart, good friend...(but he had a bratty side to him as well. haha). He ended up getting hit by a car, and our whole family cried for days. :( But we have very good memories of him. :)

    • @diyfferent

Yea, it does seem that we were led to find that baby. It was so strange! I am glad we found a rehabilitator though because I am not fond of caring for baby mammals...too much commitment! That is so sad about your raccoon...

Val O'Brien, We had prior experience caring for orphaned kittens. We also looked up specifics about baby raccoons. We also called veterinarians, who would not take it because they don't look at wild animals. We only had the raccoon for 3 days until we found a rehabber who could take it. I'm not sure why you say we "didn't have a clue how to look after him". What did we do wrong? Your comment was a bit rude.

I did the same thing with a baby wolf. I fould him in my back yard i waited for a few hours the mother didnt come back for it. I felt bad hearing it cry so i went outside and i took him in then. kept him for about a year. Then i gave him to my cousin who takes care of wolfs for a living. And i visit him every time i can. He remember me and actualy runs up and jumps on me. Im sad he isnt living with me anymore but im happy he remembers me and he is happy where he is.

You don't need to justify why you saved a raccoon, you did the right thing, a wonderful thing! Animals need our help sometimes nature goes wrong too. Allot of people save raccoons and give them loving homes. ❤️❤️❤️ The guy seems allot more willing to keep it. The wife said she was glad she didn't have to take care of it anymore🙄

There is nothing "weird" about finding a vulnerable baby alone. Natural habitat and food sources are being gobbled up by greedy humans, and parent animals are hunted or dying of starvation and illness.
Good for you - you are kind and caring and responsible. And your child learns this from you. Bravo.

This is awesome. Thank you for stepping in and showing kindness to a helpless baby. Two nights ago a baby bird followed me and my dog home. It followed us for 15 minutes, even running when we tried to speed away. When I got home it kept trying to jump through our glass door. Obviously it wanted help, so I brought him inside. Put him in a tall box with grass under a heat lamp. Took him to a Vet clinic that works with a wildlife preserve. Found out it was a 2 week old Ameraucana Chicken! One of the vets has chickens and adopted him. Spoke with the vet yesterday and they told me he is healthy and full of energy.

I was given 2 babies. The mother was dead in the road and they were on the side of the road, crying for mom. A friend picked them up and brought them to me, since I had, had a pet raccoon before. I got cows milk from the neighbors barn and put a little sugar in it. I borrowed 2 4oz baby bottles from another neighbor. They thrived! When they were old enough to climb trees and run, I let them stay out of their cage, in our backyard. We had 10 acres, so plenty of room for them. When summer came, I put them in my bicycle basket and took them to the creek. They learned to swim and how to catch crayfish and minnows. When fall came, they left and never came back. Maybe it was time to find a mate? Hibernate? Oh how I missed them! They were my most favorite pets I ever had. Glad you saved it and did the right thing. I was a kid and didn’t have any other options, because my parents refused to help me with vet visit or anything. They just kept telling me that they would just die. Haha mom and dad...you both fell in love with them, too!

These are also much healthier when on puppy formula instead of cat formula. Raccoons are more related to the K-9 then the cat. But kitten formula is better than nothing... most people end up doing this same thing, no fault of their own...just wanting to save a life 👍.
I raised my first raccoon at age 13, Bandit . From then I have rehabilitated many of wildlife.
Great job to you both 👍

You totally have my admiration and respect for your thoughtfulness!

Thank you for saving the raccoon! If anyone ever finds baby animals (with absolutely no mom) or injured animals, there are state licensed rehabbers in most states. Often local animal control agencies will have rehabber info. You might have to put some effort into getting connected but it’s worth it to save a life. Animals are part of our life/world network. ❤️❤️❤️

John Seal You’re welcome. :-) A friend of mine is a rehabber so I’ve learned a lot. Her house is always full of baby squirrels, birds, possums, bunnies, even mice. I was just at her house helping feed 7 week-old *foster* puppies. Rehabbers work very hard with no thank yous. Try bottle feeding 15-20 baby critters every 3 hours. It’s a labor of love. :-)

I think you did everything perfectly. I would have been hesitant too, but since it was raining it could have caught pneumonia. And if the mom raccoon was trying to come back to get the baby the rain would have washed away the smell on the trail.
We have raccoons where I live. The only times I’ve heard babies got separated from mom was because a dog got them, a baby fell down near a river and the people couldn’t find the mom. Check out James Blackwoods channel. He’s been feeding and caring for raccoons for years. Good job!!

ease up on the leave behind mother raccoons die from delievery just like human moms do! Deer are particularly vulnerable to maternal death by birth hermages in older does. Also mom cant take care of the guy so she abandons the baby just like human moms do.

Baby fawns are supposed to be left because their mothers leave them while they eat and then come back to them. Some baby animals ARE supposed to be left. Not this guy though. They did a great job.

    • @glenbe4026
      @glenbe4026 6 років тому

Baby Fawns are left by their mums because it is safer for them. An adult doe is easier to see than a fawn lying quietly in the grass/undergrowth so that is why the mother often leaves newborn fawns. It is only when they are bit older and more athletic that the fawn starts accompanying it's mother.

I raised 2 of them from that size! A lot of work, but was a great experience for my kids.
Kitten milk is what I used... Every 4 hours. You then need to get a warm wash cloth after every feeding and rub her belly. This will get her bowels and bladder moving, immediately. We released the 1st one. Fed it dog food and eventually she learned to take care of herself. She brought her 1st litter to show us a year later.
The 2nd one we found a home for.

You can actually raise a baby raccoon to adulthood. Since you found her with her eyes still closed YOU would have become her mother. Once it gets warmer you build or buy her an outdoor shelter. She will not leave as you are her mother and you feed her. She will be tame, playful and will be great with dogs around the home. Once outside and used to it, do not let her back in the house. She will roam, hunt and find ways to feed herself, that's what raccoons do. Around the end of August, she will become restless and not come back for days at a time. It will be time to mate and find her own way, that's what raccoons do. You might get lucky for one last visit in mid fall and you can say goodbye to a great friend. As a teenage I worked at one of the largest hay and straw farms in the country, I found these babies much as you did, alone. I raised several and it was the same every time. You cannot cage them and you cannot train them. Give her love and kindness and she will find her way...............that's what raccoons do.

dan macumber I bet that was fun! I think bottle feeding was a lot for them to keep up with and they said they didn’t want to deal with that responsibility on and on. Every 2-3 hours and also having young children to raise...... woo wee 🤪

@@staceyroberts3468 My sister helped a lot. It is a ton of work for a few weeks. Plus, when I raised my raccoons it was the 70's. Probably would not get away with it today since we lived in a neighborhood.

Amazing and educated response. Cannot stand when people try and domesticate wild animals and try and compare them to dogs. Dogs have been domesticated for hundreds of thousands of years and people need to understand the difference.

The best people in the world are the people who care enough about animals to not only not harm them but also see to it that helpless animals like that baby have a better than average chance of surviving.

Thank you for taking this precious little critter in your home to care for him. He is looking so good! How awesome that God led your family to find and rescue this little critter. God loves them so much and He chose your family to be the ones to do this. Now that you've had a baby raccoon to raise a few days, you have a better understanding of them. Now when you see raccoons in the wild you will feel a connection with them.
My adult daughter would bring home raccoons that she found and rescued or that her friends found and brought to her. It was so much fun to raise them and learn about them. We raised one we named Coonie who was successful in being on her own when released. Then we had a few others we raised after that, who was found by friends when they saw the mom had been hit by a car and was dead. One of the three died later from his own injuries and the other two were raised and released successfully too. The only problem I ever had with Coonie was that she found my netbook and being curious about it she used her nimble hands and fingers to lift up about half the keys on the keyboard! :) I wasn't upset though, just disappointed. I still have that netbook and when I use it I am reminded of Coonie and the fun and blessing she was to my grandkids, my daughter and I. She was a treasure.
    God bless your precious family!

Thank you! Aww, I love the story about Coonie. :) Yes, it was a great learning experience for us. Now we feel prepared if we ever must do this again in the future. That's great that your daughter helped out orphaned raccoons. :)

Thanks for being GOOD people. You hear so many stories of animal abuse that i love watching animal rescues. I've rescued a baby owl, duck, robin, and once a baby squirrel fell 30 feet out of a tree and landed on my head. It knocked me to the ground but it saved its life by not landing on cement! Lol

I'm thinking something happened to mom....when she didn't come home the babies went out looking for her because they were hungry. I found a very young baby squirrel sitting in the middle of the road one time. No mom anywhere to be seen...I took it home and found a rehabilitator who had 3 other baby squirrels and she took it. I believe you were meant to find this little guy....nice work !

I don't get why people like making negative comments about 'why didn't you do xxx or xxx?' Like ffs, this guy saved an animals life! He doesn't have to keep it as a pet or know exactly what to do, the fact that this man made the decision to help an animal survive and focused on helping get it to a professional that knows what they're doing! He didn't know what he was doing and took it to a place where they did! Better than leaving it to die or keeping it without any trained knowledge of these animals! Most of you people would have probably left it to die or tried to keep it as a pet unknowingly! Be glad somebody was selfless on the internet!

We rescued a baby bunny that had been attacked by a cat... called local wildlife rescue and the told me that the bunny would die and hung up on me. But I had medicine from one of my guinea pigs that had been attacked by another guinea ... so I treated the rabbit, and it lived and I let it go. :)
