I first saw the Dust Cyclone Separator Cart through UA-cam and after years of clearing out clogged shop vacs every few days I was stunned! "Why haven't I added a dust separator before," I thought! I set out to build my own and here is my video showing you how I did it. I hope it helps you build yours. The Dust Separator Cart is very easy to build and the payoff is completely worth it!

When figuring out the size hole to cut for the bucket, put the bucket upside down and scribe the circumference. Then flip the bucket, center and scribe that circumference. The sweet spot is right in the middle of your two scribe lines.

I just use math. I ran a string around the circumference of the bucket under the lip.
The length of the string is C in this formula.
C = 2πR
R is your radius

Thanks to this video I made my own version. I used bigger bolts and countersunk them into the plywood, left the top square and attacked a shelf to it to tangle the cable and add a handle. Thanks for this man! it was very helpful!.
Also, I didn't use PVC cement, mainly because I didn't have any handy, I used CA glue with activator and works just as well.

Good job on the video! I built my cart last week which is almost identical to yours minus the cord wrap which I will be adding now that I saw yours. Also I found pvc table caps to attach the pvc pipe to the table. They’re used in pvc furniture. Great work!

Nice job! I built one as well with a Ridgid stainless model a while ago. I used some large dowels glued to the top for some of the tools...At the end of the day the sharing of ideas helps us all. Time to make some dust and wood chips.

I love these cart ideas! Thanks for all your tips and suggestions. If you ever have any tipping over issues, just put an old barbell weight in the bottom of the shopvac. Since it doesn't need to be emptied very often, the cart will be more stable without losing dust collection space.

They come attached to the vacuum. However you can check out my shop vac castor wheel upgrade to see more details on a different way I made them work.

Good project - you inspired me to make one too. One tip from an old plumber....no need to use primer on your PVC for something like this. It’s extra cost and time. It’s critical if you’re doing actual plumbing but keep in mind one component of the cement is the same stuff the primer is made from. So for furniture projects the glue alone is plenty good enough. PS the music could just stay at that nice low background level all the time for my taste LOL (or be nuked) . No need to ride the fader 😂

First time seeing one of your vids, the thumbnail caught my attn. like many others, I’ve seen a multitude of DIY shop vac/cyclone separator carts, but this one might be my favorite because of it’s fairly compact design and minimal floor space taken up because of the vertical direction that you went with it. It also looks relatively cheap to make, easy to assemble, and is easily disassembled if & when needed. The only thing I probably would do differently is to just not glue the pieces together just in case I did wanna tweak things a little bit here and there every so often. I’m pretty sure it would hold just fine without it, given the tight friction fitting that the pvc parts have together. Thank you for sharing and I might just have to build this one. Aloha

Nice job! I built one of those for my shop. Recommend you buy a filter bag for your shop vac and the factory filter will be much cleaner. The bag doesn’t fill up at all since most of the waste is going into the 5 gallon bucket.

So I came across something wired.... I got a new rigid and the size of the base (above the caster) where you plugged in the legs.... is a weird size.... there is a lot of play when I use the 2” pvc pipe and the remaining sizes are either too big or small.....did you have to deal with it?
I just picked up a dustopper today and have a similar Rigid shop vac. I bought wood to make a similar system with the 5 gallon bucket on top. I kind of like your design better.... hmm tough choice but now you gave me something to consider. Thanks for this awesome video 👍👍👍

I found it easier, when you're trying to get the diameter of the bucket at the lower lip (ref. @3:08), to measure the circumference at the lower lip and divide that by 3.14 to get the diameter (circumference = diameter * pi). Wrap a string around it and then measure the string is better than using a measuring tape.

Having worked with PVC for decades, I highly recommend you twist the parts as you push it together. You then get a good spread inside and no gaps from just pushing straight down.

Thank you, made one similar based on your instruction. One thing I'd point out for anyone wanting to do the same, I wanted the plywood to be lower and ended up getting the precutt 2 ft pieces from the hardware store. To make up for the height I cut a hole big enough for the bucket to go about halfway in. I had put the pipes on the shop vac than put the bucket an inch above the vac and marked where the plywood would sit on the bucket itself, then measured the circumference with a tape. You can then put into one of many online calculators that will tell you exactly how big the hole needs to be in radius or diameter. I set my hole cutting jig to this, about 10.75" and the bucket ended up fitting exactly where I wanted it.
Great video, helped save me from a needlessly big wood cart for the set up.

This is a great design. Thank you! I purchased the new HD 1400 model. Unfortunately as commented here the new wheel assembly is no longer the same. I used 2" PVC and a 2" female adapter that is threaded on one side and a 2" coupler on the other. You will need to sand down the threaded side slightly in order to get it to fit. You don't need to take off much. I used the electrical gray version as this one was 2 1/2 inches and fitted better. I used the screws for the hose bracket and pre-drilled the PVC on the base. It added an addition connection. I had the dust deputy already and used it with this design. I don't know how to add a picture of the female adapter. You will find it in the electrical dept in Home Depot.

Yours sounds better. For mine I used a chisel to cut out most of the 2 x 1/2" reducer inside lip, this lets if fit very snugly in the wheel cavity (seriously snug, the remainder of the lip catches against the sides so it doesn't move around). The top riser of the wheel cavity was still causing a problem so I used a multitool to cut off the back third of it, and with the same tool cut two notches in the 1 1/2" pvc pipes until they could slide inside. Since this method uses less base connectors you'll need a longer pipe to compensate (I'd plan on 34" long and then trim from there as needed). Home Depot also sells all of the pipe parts and flat end caps in black, so you shouldn't need to spray paint at all.

Un like The Duststopper Kit the Dust Deputy has a much longer throat that is tapered, thus more dust from the Duststopper finds its way to the vacuum filter and chamber. The Dust Deputy significantly reduces the dust to the vacuum filter/chamber while maintaining a greater vortex or cyclone. Thumbs up on your creative configuration of comparing both the vac/Duststopper and production quality (less the music).

Thanks for this video! I was all ready to get my parts list together and realized I have the wrong Rigid vacuum. I thought I had the same one, but my castors don't have the same inset for the piping. And the link you have to the vacuum is busted...so I need to figure out which model this is.

I just built this tonight. I used the elbow brush from Lowes as other suggested and I was able to use 1 1/2 couplings and some screws for the feet. I did 2 screws per leg but I may go back and add a 3rd. I may add some kind of cross-bracing later as there is some wobble when you start to move it, but it is performing just fine.

HAHAHA!! This is one of my favorite comments. Honestly it's my problem too. It is very easy to use as a catch all. But my wife rocks and we both don't like clutter so its either to trash or goodwill if stuff sits for a couple of days.
I just built mine using the newer NXT HD1200 model so a few mods were necessary. But I just had to say your tip for adding a cord wrap on the top was right on the money! It’s very convenient to have it where it’s reachable!!

Built mine basically the same way as yours. I did take my wheels off and built a 2x4 cross frame with 4 inch casters and attached it to the legs of the vac. Now its "off roadable" and smooth running in the shop.

I just watched a video last week on the duststopper and I went out and bought it. Then I thought, could I mount the vacuum and bucket on top of each other? Sure enough, there is a you tube video on it. Great video, clear and you showed how to fix mistakes.

Just bought a Dustopper, awesome tool!!!

I modified this design. On two of the uprights I spliced in Tee connectors. I then extended from the Tee about 8" pipe. Then added a 90 degree fitting pointed up, placed may 8" or 10" pipe running vertical. Put an end cap on this pipe. Now I have a handy place to store my hoses. I unwrap what I need to reach the tool. I use two types of Rockler hoses, the expandable and the non expandable hoses.

Super appreciate the complete shopping list. The wife's biggest annoyance of any of my woodworking is the colossal mess I make. Being able to price this all out should make for an easy sell on a trip to the store.

This makes great hobby, I BET that this setup makes great sandblaster cabinet setup as bucket would make sort of reclaimed media while vacuum collect dust. In my mind it should work. Awesome share! Thanks

Very good video on how to build an inexpensive dust collection system. I found plans in one of my woodworking magazines for one very similar to this one. I built one also using a Ridgid shop vac, but I used an old 15gal. oil drum with a homemade wood lid and the dust deputy. It works really well in my shop, although i do need to lower the top part a bit. Again very informative video.

Great video. I took your idea and ran with it. Only I have a Craftsman vac and the holes above the wheels are only 5/8". I had on hand 1/2" PVC pipe with 5/8" OD. Using short lengths of pipe, I stuffed those into the holes above the wheels (where you used the 2" couplings) and built up from there with 2" 2" pine. ( I drilled the bottoms of the legs with a Forstner bit). I then attached my platform to the top of the legs with screws, cut out the large hole for the bucket, and Walla, was done in no time at all and for basically no cost as I used what I found in the barn. Works great 👍, thanks.

I just finished the construction of my unit; two things that may help: I found the longer 2" couplings in the (Home Depot) electrical department where the underground electrical PVC pipe is. The ones I found are grey, but they fit perfectly to 2" plumbing PVC pipe. Also, the diameter hole for the HD bucket is 11-1/4" (5-5/8" radius). Fits like a glove, I didn't need the hold-down tab. Thanks for an informative vid. It saved me a LOT of trial-and-error!
