This show was ground breaking at the time. A couple of years ago we picked up a mint condition Julia doll from 1969 at a garage sale. Got something like $250 for it online. The doll was made by Mattel as a Barbie friend , using the Barbie body mold and especially sculpted face mold as Julia, and came in a nurse uniform. For the first time little girls had a beautiful black fashion doll just like Barbie.
I was about the same age. I remember the show but vaguely to be honest. It wasn't until years later that I realized it was a ground breaking show for african americans. Julia paved the way for Sandford and Son The Jeffersons and Good Times.
Amazing. This show puts its finger on systemic racism. Rest in power dianne Carroll. This was a ground breaking show that deserved more respect in tv history.
Rest in Peace to you, Diahann Carroll. What a powerful difference, that she has made in the world of television. Her scene with Marc (Corey) was so heartfelt, and worth listening to, about the meaning of "prejudice".
I'm over half a century old and I never saw this show, never heard of this show, and the library never had it on dvd... so far it's a wonderful show! I hope they have more episodes on youtube! Thank you very much for posting this.
Susan Olsen must have just stepped off the Brady Bunch set and onto the set of Julia. :-) Powerful episode. Hard to believe this made it to prime time television in 1968. Still relevant after all these years. Thanks for sharing.
@@kenlompart9905 I think the pilot episode of The Brady Bunch was filmed in October of 1968. Since this episode of Julia aired only a month later, you are most likely correct that this show was filmed first and was already on Susan’s resume when she was cast as Cindy.
@@EastSide-qc5oy You're right, I looked it up and filming for The Brady Bunch pilot began on October 4, 1968 and this episode of Julia aired on November 26 1968, good call.
How prophetic. In one of the later Brady Bunch episodes, Cindy decked herself out to resemble Shirely Temple - complete with multi-curled hairstyle - in an effort to be disovered by a talent scout.
Is that the same dress Susan Olsen wore in the Brady Bunch episode "Kitty Carry-all is missing"? It's amazing how they made Cindy out to resemble Pamela, even the hairstyle.
The two dresses are very similar: here, there's a red collar that isn't on the dress in the "Kitty Carryall" episode, and the detail on the lower righthand side of the dress seems different. Both if those details would be easy enough to change with a sewing machine. The dress(es) are the same or similar blue with white polka dots, and the same/very similar red ribbons in Susan's hair, too. Marc Copage had a blog about seven years ago. Not sure if he still has it. I asked him about her, and he said she was writing a book. I saw a fairly recent picture of her with Lily Tomlin at some event. (I don’t think there was ever a question regarding her sexual orientation despite not being open about it)
I remember as a white kid growing up in australia watching this and thinking how great DC was . Still is ! What a great role model for black women. No finger snapping , no “oh no you dih-ent”, no angry black woman . Compare that to fools like whoopie , omarrosa , Beyoncé and her giant ego.
Kids were a lot more respectable back then. Nowadays, it's shocking to see and hear how disrespectful kids are today. Times sure have changed and not for the better.
Dianne Carroll was such a beautiful lady.

I remember watching this show as a kid. I always thought Diahann Carroll was so pretty.
She was smart and kind, too.
I wish all TV shows were this wonderful.

Diahann
When TV was TV.
Systemic racism?
A ground breaking show for it's time 🙂.
Sure was. A single parent family. And a starring role to a Black woman. It was progressive in an honorable way.
I remember those avocado green refrigerators and stoves.
Rest in Peace to you, Diahann Carroll.

WOW😳 This program is as relevant today as it was 50yrs ago!?!? Thanks for sharing! I “saved” it on my YT account! 💗
I concur
I forgot what a great show this was! A childhood favorite.
I hope this show comes out on DVD, I would love to see it. This is a great episode
That would be nice

Damn you’re old af
I remember watching it, Rich. It was on NBC television. I was 5 years old when it started, but I'm more familiar with 1970 episodes. ✌️
@@Market-ro1gp My mom always had to see Julia, when I was a wee tot. That and Dark Shadows. She and Julia were both nurses.
I'm older I watched this series when it was originally released. Some episodes also show her working in Doctor's office.
It was very well done with careful taste and sometimes rosy blunt; watched this as a kid and was pretty impressed by the acting and writing.
This show was 12 years before my time but I love me some Nurse Julia.

I think this was just before she got the part of Cindy Brady, this was aired in 68 and The Brady Bunch aired in 69.

Dated 1968 in description Brady Bunch premiered in 1969.
I watched this as a kid. I was almost 7 y/o when it premiered. Hard to fathom that was 55 years ago.
Loved how the landlord handle it
The landlord is played by Ned Glass, a very prolific character actor in the 1950s and 1960s.
Great episode!
Susan Olsen resembled Shirley Temple when she was really young with her curls.
How prophetic.

Shirley temple never wore pony tails
@@phillygirl06 She did actually in Rebecca of Sunnybrook farm. Not high ones but low ones.
Amazingly relevant

Ok, because my question was "is that Cindy from the Brady Bunch?"
Coolzies ☺️
It is Cindy Brady from the Brady Bunch. Susan Olsen.😊
The pilot to the Brady Bunch was filmed in September 1968, so it was about the same time.
She wore her hair that way in bonanzA gunsmoke

Cindy Brady😅 I saw this episode when it first aired. I remember the line about sun bathing. Cheap shot, but it is a question a kid might ask.
