      What’s the difference between “wide feet” and having a tailor’s bunion? - or both bunions, if they’re not too pronounced? I know what an inside bunion is at the base of the big toe but have always had wide feet. Now I’m wondering if I don’t just have bunions.

    PLEASE see an orthopedic podiatrist. Bunions are nothing to mess with! I’m not a ballerina, but I had bunions very early on in my life. I got them surgically corrected and felt relief for more than 20 years. Now my osteoarthritis has set in and I’m having trouble walking. PLEASE do not ignore any type of foot pain!

    Man, I wish these videos were around when I was dancing! I have really wide feet and always found my pointe shoes painful, especially at the big toe and pinky toe joints. My teacher's solution was to get me wider shoes, but they just hurt more because I was sinking in them. It was so bad that my shoes were too short when I was flat but gaping when I was en pointe. When others complained about their shoes hurting, my teacher would just point out that my baby toe was literally not in my box and I wasn't complaining, like pushing through this pain was normal. I think if I had gone with a more tapered shoe, maybe with a higher profile, like this shoe here, I would have loved pointe! As it was, I was always so happy to be cast in the male roles (we had no male dancers) so I could be in slippers, haha! Thank you for bringing your incredible knowledge to the masses!😁😁😁

    I really wish I would've had someone good to help me with my feet when I was a pointe dancer. I had bunions just like that and instead of changing the shape of my shoe when I started to feel a lot of pain a couple years in, they gave me a super wide shoe that I sank in and sprained my ankles 8 different times over the course of a year. My doctor told me I had to quit from the damage to my ankles and my teacher told me it was my fault. I miss ballet so much.

    Hi Josephine, when I tried shoes that are slighter rounder that gives me more space on the sides but still having the same width on the platform, I feel lots of pressure on the head my bunion (vertically). I tried spacers but because of the tapered shape of the shoe, my toes get squashed, and a bigger box makes me sink into my shoe. I tried putting a small cotton sponge on the top of the bunion so that the pressure is absorbed by the sponge but overall in the shoe, my bunion hurts a lot and it gets really inflamed. Thank you so much!

      this is similar to my situation too, i think putting some water on the bunion area helped me.. but yeah! i wear spacers, i sink if i go any wider, i have a shoe with a rounder metatarsal and i have bad painful pressure on my bunions. i'm thinking maybe i should try to go narrower and then just squash the box down flat to widen it up abit so i'll have lots of supprt and no sinking possibly but i'll have to wait for my next fitting to know..

      @carsalessmith6391 4 роки тому +1

      @@BoglimWrangler666 Hi just wondered have you tried a narrower shoe ? I was thinking exactly the same , more support on the metertsrsal joint could stop sinking to much , I use a thin pad because it causes my shoes to pull real tight on my heels , Happy dancing Sharon.

    • @vivianleowyouchun
      @vivianleowyouchun 4 роки тому

      Oh, yes and I also realised that my big toe metatarsal and the 2nd toe metatarsal are actually quite far apart from each other (especially on my left foot due to the bigger bunion), hence with the growth of the bunion, not only does the big toe tilt inward, the MTP joint (bunion) keeps getting pushed outwards, creating a "hollow space" between the 2 metatarsals. Hence, I feel that with spacers, it should help reduce the pain but due to the shape of the pointe shoes, my 3rd, 4th, 5th toes gets thoroughly compressed and it sticks out of the box of the shoe, making me have a sickled foot even though my foot is facing completely forward. Due to the extra spacer in the pointe shoe, my weight in the shoe is now on my bunion, big toe, spacer, 2nd toe and the other 3 toes getting squashed and is now in great pain. I tried this during class but it was too painful and too ineffective so I just removed the spacer in the end. If I tried a larger box, my toes just sink completely and I also have a pretty narrow heel so it gets really annoying finding suitable shoes as I have really wide foot at the metatarsal area including my bunion. Hope someone out there can relate!!! Perhaps we can give each other some tips and advice? Xxx

    Recovering from bunion surgery right now. Both feet, 18 days ago. What I find helps is custom pads. As soon as I can, I'm making a video about for to do it for under $15. By shaping the inside of the shoe to fit the foot instead of vice versa, there's space for the bunion instead of the shoe pressing against it. It also takes care of the problem of a longer second toe.

    Please come to Tennessee!!!! I have been on pointe for four years now and have pretty much tried every shoe besides freeds and suffolks. Nothing seems to work for me, and its frustrating because I feel like I will never find the perfect shoe! Right now I am wearing Capezio Ava's and i 3 quarter the shank because my arch is not as pretty as other people's so this makes it mold to my foot better. However, my pinky toe bunions bother me so much to the point of tears when I wear them. I have tried grishkos, gaynors, Russians, blochs, capezios, and even mirellas but none of them seem to match my foot right! And I am getting super desperate to find the right pair because this December I will be performing the role of sugar plum at my studio's produaction of the nutcracker. And I really want a shoe that fits right and looks nice for this performance in December! Any tips, or could you come fit me in Nashville, Tn? Thanks, Marlee Scott

    Hi Josephine, my feet shapes are different - more even toes on the left and more tapered toes on the right. Both have wide metatarsal and normal to narrow heels. I was first fitted with a shoe with wide platform and it worked for some time until the second last toe on the right start to rub and get inflamed. The left shoe is also twisting a little. At the same time I started sinking in them. I switched to a shoe that has a smaller platform. There’s no sinking but my second last toe on the right is still rubbing quite often. But this time the right shoe seems to be twisting a little. What do you think I should address to the fitter the next time to find a better fit? Thank you!

    Hello Josephine can I as your advice please.
    I have just started ballet again after a break of 10 years but experiencing pointe shoe fitting problems due to bunions and hammered toes, Currently in a tapered toe with high vamp but my right bunion is bulging out so much and after 1 hour I'm in total agony , You mentioned toe spacer and I tried this made just straightening my big toe caused more pain so gave onto that idea.
    Any Idea if tape over the bunion joints will help to reduce the bump bulging out ? Btw I'm uk size 4 and one bunion is quite serious other moderate, I'm in my 30s and want ballet to be part of my fitness routine as well as fun, Also any particular make of shoe better for the more Mature feet with related problems? Thanks Sharon.

    Is wearing a toe spacer just a way of relieving pain while dancing or does the presence of a toe spacer actually help prevent your bunions from worsening long term? I definitely prefer not wearing them but I’m afraid if I don’t, my bunions will get worse over time. Any advice?

    • @kiaraclarke29
      @kiaraclarke29 4 роки тому +2

      The spacers are there to help bring the big toe back into alignment. I have bunions and find that I just sink down in my shoes without them. Although it's personal personal preference not wearing spacers could mean worsening the bunions because of the constant pressure put on them en pointe when they aren't aligned properly.

    My toes are shaped like the big toe is the longest and then the last small toe is the shortest, I use ouch pouches, but there is a lot of pressure on my big toe so I tape a little piece of silicone on my big toe but then my big toe gets even longer and it's not good, What do I do?
    And another problem, my little toe’s nail has looked weird, it has grown to have two thin layers, the top layer came off and now it's a very thin nail and now it's hurts when I dance on pointe, I tried to put that Gaynor Minden dancers dots but I can’t put it like that it stays on:(

    • @ashlynhatch3989
      @ashlynhatch3989 4 роки тому +1

      Not an expert, but I found that padding around pressure points helps. So maybe get some lambs wool or gel pads to put beneath your smaller toes to help even out the pressure. For your pinky toe, use toe tape to tape the dancer dot on it if it won't stay on, or you can put a ton of layers of clear nail polish on it.

I am also sinking because they decided which toe pad is best for me after the fitted, and they gave me a smaller one than the one I was fitted with. I asked if I could try a spacer but she said that when I pointed my foot my big toe was straight. She also wouldn't listen to anything I said! But anyways, when I point my foot, my big toe is straight but my little toe bends towards my big toe. But on pointe, my big toe bends or is forced to slant towards my little toes. What should I do? I’m having issues with really severe tailors bunion pain on my larger foot (I’m wearing the same size shoe on both feet so it is more snug on my left foot which causes worse pain, at least I think that’s why) and I’m thinking this will help. Would lambswool help too? I have a mildly tapered toe.

My character is a ballerina on pointe and I didn’t know if it would be ok and if not what would be some alternatives, I am not planning on actually going on pointe with them but just walk flat, I would really appreciate it if someone could answer! Heidi I can't tell you if it's okay though I think it would seeing as you'll be walking only (not going up on pointe) BUT don't take my word for it....
      That said, pointe shoes are expensive. They're like $50 or more, so I wouldn't recommend buying a pair just for one show. Ballet flats are cheaper seeing as their not hand made. If it's just for show maybe look for satin fabric flats with the ribbons, that way they have the appearance of pointe shoes.

      My second toe is longer, and I find that darning just around the edge of the platform helps. If you position it properly for this purpose, this lifts you off the center of the tip, so even as your long 2nd toe pushes into the platform, it won't push as hard into the floor.

    Just wear spacers to prevent them in the first place

    Hi, I haven't gone en pointe yet but i'm taking pre pointe classes and my dance teacher said it should take me around six moths to get shoes but I have feet where my second toe is the longest. Is that a problem for pointe shoes?

      Datcutecat Do 3 months is actually a pretty long time to have your pointe shoes for. It depends how often you dance in them but pointe shoes have an average life span of 10 hours. Also since you’re still young it’s normal for your feet to grow.
