      All the original makers have gone through so many changes they are entirely unrecognizable. I started with PC gear with a brand label "IBM" PC XT. When Compaq and HP merged there was already new mgt and they were profoundly changing. It turns out it's too hard to build oneself their own laptop, so we who always build our own gear will not try this with a laptop, so we are interested in what's available in this area.

    Recently bought a HP Slim S01-AF2006NA Desktop PC for my boomer dad. Ran the updates and uninstalled a lot of the Windoze crap (couldn't uninstall McAfee) and it bricked the O.S. Recovery partition couldn't bring it back to life. Had to resort to downloading the official Microsoft Windoze 11 ISO and perform a clean reinstall from a thumb drive. Makes my 2013 Mac Pro feel like a dream.

    I got to thank you Alex, I was waiting for a lot of these reviews about the SxE/SxP chips and was pretty ecstatic to get one since they have an upgradeable SSD, but the prices swayed me and I ended up with an M2 MacBook Air - which considering your other review seems to have been a good idea.
    Thank you for reviewing them all!

    It seems the main coverage today is of HP Omnibook with a Snapdragon X Elite X1E-78-100 processor (up to 3.4 ghz, 12 core). So, this is not x86 but an ARM implementation, which may factor into buying decisions. prices are around $1,050 as of 7/10/24. HP says under 3lbs, 26 hrs batt life.

    I couldn't install Norton 360 or My Norton Utilities Ultimate. Not compatible. There is a thinner version of Norton called Norton Security available in the Microsoft store. I suppose that and the built in Micrsoft Defender Antivirus is enough.

    • @crtune
      @crtune 2 місяці тому

      All the Norton products are super notorious. I'm being weak in terms here - using euphemisms. Most PC experts deem all Norton and McAfee products hell spawn, and something to be immediately removed from equipment that comes into their care. There are quite a few great options for anti-vir, or anti-adware. Defender is okay for some of that. The other stuff around "optimizing" are bogus and either useless or actually destructive. There is an entire world of utilities out there and great tools can be had from FOSS sources - stuff like Belarc, or Crystal Disk Info, HWinfo64, REVO Uninstaller (use this not Norton; gets far better reviews from people doing this all the time; getting rid of McAfee would be a great test of REVO). Of course you make your own choices, but most of us are willing to help with guidance where we have stumbled in the past and learned the hard way.

    S mode is a limited version of Win 10 or 11 which strips down features (allows only Edge as browser, allows only MSFT store apps to install) and makes Win hardened against security intrusions installing payloads and such. If you actually were in S mode you would get out of it via a selection inside MSFT store. Since you installed Win Subsystem for Linux I'd really DOUBT you are in S mode.
    Opening many instances of Powershell and Task Manager is not very impressive. I get it you were frustrated, but one of each is all you really need

    HP makes terrible printer, with programmed obsolescence and firmware locking them to their toners, and locking their printer if you do not print enough. So you don't get to use the printer you paid for as if it was your printer. If you don't print enough, their toner will expire after a set time, even if it still has toner in it. They even have a print as a subscription service, so you have to keep paying them monthly for the privilege to be able to print with the printer you already paid for. Crazy, a printer firmware locked and controlled by HP even after you paid full price for it.
