  • Woodcocks are fascinating birds. In this short video, URI master's student Liam Corcoran describes the special traits that make them invisible to predators and how they bend that long bill underground. Plus he shows us where their ear is located. It's not where you think!

Have heard that this dancing bird have their brains at the base of their skull, which allows them to have a higher eye socket placement.
Was known as the BeeGees bird as in my school the term “woodcock” wasn’t allowed and the dance they do is consistent to the rhythm of Stayin’ Alive and You Should Be Dancing.

Ok but why does it dance while walking?

Not sure. Might have to do with sensing earthworms in the ground.

Why do they dance up and down?

We don't know for sure. I could have to do with feeling for the tiny underground vibrations of their favorite food: earthworms.

I bet the ears are located in that spot to help them hear their, prey which is in the ground.

Holding the bird like that doesn't seem gentle and loving enough. And the tags on the feathers and feet, this feels so sad. We must learn to treat animals with much more gentleness. Even in the conservation world.
