I just saw a video of two of them attempting to cross a road while doing their hilarious little bob and step and they kept trying to synchronize with one another. They looked so funny and cute that I was laughing for the entirety of the video.

I had one on my front lawn. I watched it for quite a while. Then I tried to sneak around and get a picture. It must have been a sight. I moved very slowly a few steps at a time. It would would bob, bob away a few steps. And repeat. Finally, it got to the woods and disappeared in the brush.
      They are so marvelous.

The bobbing might cause insects to come out from under dry leaves or from holes in the soil. In snow, the bobbing probably makes insects move, which the woodcock can hear and dive for.

As an American Woodcock hunter for the past 55yrs I was going to comment on the sound they make when they take flight. I was hoping that you 'd have it recorded but I didn't catch it if you did. The only other sound I have ever heard them make is a very small verbal utterance that sounds like saying the word "nerd." The American Woodcock makes a whistling sound with it's wings when it takes flight or if it is already in flight, the sound occurs when they are startled or if they make a major change in direction or accelerate in speed. In my area the hunting season runs from mid September to mid November. The birds migrate South from Canada thru my area and are easily seen right at dusk and dawn. But shooting hours are specific and detailed explicitly in the hunting guide to the minute. Almost like having Deer cross the road only at the Deer Crossing signs (?) American Woodcock take flight mere seconds after shooting hours end. If you are foolish enough to shoot them after the legal hours, you are easily found by the Woodcock Shooting Police. And they all know to get out of their trucks to listen for shooting at shooting hours end. Beautiful and very good eating especially if fried with Bacon, Woodcock are one of God's amazing animals. I sincerely hope Al Gore, John Kerry, Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk with his transhumanists don't decide Woodcock have too big of a Carbon Footprint to be allowed to exist. ben/ michigan
