Beautiful woodcock hops to the hospital and home again!

  • Woodcocks are an unusual patient here at the Wildlife Aid hospital, so our vets Emma and Maru were quite impressed by this lovely bird. It was brought in after flying into a window, but luckily Emma and Maru found nothing wrong with it (apart from a likely headache!). After a few days rest at the hospital to monitor it, Simon was able to release the woodcock in an ideal location, where it seemed more than happy to hop off into its new home!

      You do realize the word "cock" first described male birds, then it was appropriated as a verb for their motion such as when a puppy cocks their head, and then vulgarly because of how early they rise and sing their territorial war cries? From peacocks to cockerels to the woodcock and beyond, their name isn't the funny bit, and I'd wager anyone who has decided the word "cock" is exclusively vulgar simply isn't educated enough. Yes words can be funny, but by laughing about it you're essentially being that person who reposts memes that the person in it asked to please stop... like Star Wars kid. You're just bullying everyone at that point.

    We've got American woodcocks here in the marshlands around Chicago and they migrate throughout the area. Found one that had flown into a window and was wombling around dazed on a busy downtown sidewalk. We have a bird rescue group here that regularly patrols the downtown area looking for birds injured like this (as you can imagine, there are many - lots of tall glass buildings), so I gave them a call and they took him off for rehab. They are lovely birds!

    • @neosapienz7885
      @neosapienz7885 2 роки тому +16

      Thank you for doing that. I’m in Chicago too and have had them pick up a young Sora Rail I found in my alley one night sitting under a street lamp. I also rescued a Redstart sitting dazed outside of my office building. They do wonderful work. Even though the city tries to cut down on light pollution so the birds can migrate through, the glass building still cause a lot of injuries and deaths.

    • @Sleipnirseight
      @Sleipnirseight 8 місяців тому +4

      Oh god, the one time I visited Chicago was only for 2 days, and I saw multiple birds that had hit skyscraper windows. Only one was still alive (a brown creeper) and I scooped it up, carried it away from the busy sidewalk and road, and brought it to a park. Chicago is cool, but the bird situation is depressing.

    • @AbsentWithoutLeaving
      @AbsentWithoutLeaving 8 місяців тому +4

      @@Sleipnirseight - Yeah, those all-glass skyscrapers are killers. On the other hand, though, we have a lot of dedicated parklands throughout the city that are natural bird 'resorts,' and a naturalized foot/bikepath that follows along the Chicago River almost from downtown,out to the Western suburbs, on which Bald Eagles (!) have recently been spotted diving for fish!! (They migrate thru this area these days, and some have established themselves in the forest preserves a bit south from the city center.)
      Lots of hawks and falcons that live in the city, too. I've watched multiple generations of a hawk family nest in some trees two houses down from my 3rd floor apartment balcony...so much fun to see them come back year after year. Keeps the rodent and pigeon population down, too.
      You can always tell when and where a raptor has been hunting...you'll be walking along and suddenly you notice a thick trail of feathers scattered through the grass.
      The ones nesting near me will frequently take a moment to strip their catch while sitting on top of the telephone pole out back, right at eye-level from my back porch, before bringing it back to the nest for the young 'uns. A bit gruesome, but such is nature, and the babies gotta eat!

      +RefiaPhenix Where do you live? It sounds like a nice country. Over here in America, birds like that are also a popular game bird sadly, quail are a favorite too. Isn't it enough that hunters already have a goddamn GUN on their side, do they really have to make it as easy as possible?
      Over here they even put them into *fenced* areas, clip their wings, and then people pay money to have the easiest, most unfair game of hunting ever. You may or may not remember (I don't know how much this was in the news internationally) when Dubya was president, vice president Cheney was involved in a scandal after he _shot his friend in the face_ at one of those places. After it happened, I bought a t-shirt that says "I survived quail hunting with Dick Cheney". So many people asked me about it, especially other kids who weren't aware of the incident, and the mockery continued. Got kinda off topic.

    i walked into an ol dilapidated camp one time and a woodcock flew right into my arms,needless to say it was really happy to get back outside,im kinda curious to know how long it was in there(it flew in through a hole in a broken window i assume)

    The way he casually walks out of the cage and hops off the bench was both anticlimactic and comical. Haha

      Emergency Command Hologram? If so, somebody was pulling a Star Trek Voyager which is "irrelevant" to the video. Yeah I had to go Borg.

    I've heard Woodcock calls but never seen one in the wild. That would be a treat to handle & care for one. Nice work.

    I love it when you release these little goofballs that don't fly away, maybe they want to stay with you cause the love you share with us. Thank you and your fellow friends, and new ones in the field.
