I love the simplicity of this design! Even though I'll fill my bucket halfway with water, some folks may not be cool with that, so I appreciate you addressing this matter with class.
I use a large paint roller, handle and all. Zip tie the handle to the top of bucket and brace the end of the handle to keep it upright and not sag into bucket. Smear peanut butter all over center if roller. I’ve caught several large rats over last two weeks. They climb chain link kennel I use as chicken coop, walk across paint roller handle, and out onto the roller. I dab peanut butter all around kennel leading to the bucket. I’ve been getting a rat every two-three days since using this technique. I reset everything after catching a rat. I’ve caught some huge ones. I think the fat paint roller may give them a little more confidence and you can really saturate it with peanut butter so more opportunity for them to fall in.
That is an oustanding mod. I never thought of that but sounds great for the larger beasts. Great exchange of ideas....every now and then social media works... 😁
@@tallswede80 yep, the fuzzy roller absorbs some of the peanut butter and makes the rats have to commit more to balancing to get it all. I got small to medium ones regularly and about one jumbo for every 5 small/mediums.

We are having a rat problem, and our rats just laugh at 5gl buckets...they can jump right out of our waist high rolling trash bin. Until I put 8 inches of water in it. Now I'm the one laughing
Grease the bucket lip with vegetable oil and they have no chance. I've got chipmunks and squirrels this way. You can't grip what you can't apply pressure to.

Yes. I'm using a beige garbage can. I'm going to add unscented dish soap to the water ~ We have lots of racoons too that knock pails over. The garbage can has 2 handled on it ~ So I'll tie them to 2 fence posts ~ Add the ramp & peanut butter. I live near the beach where all the restaurants are ~ So yes ~ Due to this covid thing ~ The rats have moved in , under my shed. It's been a nightmare. They come up the back staircase onto the deck at night. Had to cut branches way back from 2 surrounding trees because they were literally jumping from the top branches onto the roof!! The rats just moved up the street 😐 🤦🙄😳

Thank you. I'm having same issue. They are getting into the animal feed. Chewed right through plastic storage container to get to bird seed but when I saw thier babies in the garden mid day I knew I had a big problem. I didn't want to kill the critters but the pheromones they leave behind...anything less than a 5 miles away release, with a body of water between us, and they will come right back I'd imagine. And releasing them feels like I'm just making it someone elses problem. I'm not hiking 5 miles out into the woods everyday with a rat or two. If I got a bunch at once...maybe. Torn about it but these things got to go. They are dirty and multiply fast. Thanks for the tutorial and best of luck to your anty down in Alabama.
I have had zero luck with these traps. I think it's because I am using a nonstandard bucket--it is five gallons, but it is tall and narrow. Also because I am using a jar that doesn't entirely cover the coat hanger. So far as I can tell, the rodents latch onto the rim of the bucket, stretch out to nibble the bait, and catch themselves on the coat hanger if they slip. And if really big rats are visiting, they can probably just jump out if they fall in. They are such intelligent creatures, been outsmarting me six ways from Sunday for months now!
If you have a trail camera, set it to video mode and see what they are doing. May help you form a new plan. They are good at figuring things out though.

I just use a bucket full of water, piece of 2x4 and black sunflower seeds. Make a trail up the 2x4 and float seeds on the water surface. I’m catching very big rats this way.
Took me less than five minutes to round up the supplies, build, bait and set up in the garage. No water to test if they can jump out. Water (with oil) if they can.

I mentioned that in the video so people who prefer to relocate them can still participate. As a farmer, I can't afford to have then running wild so I've only used the water method....

Think this works better for mice than rats. I have a rat that is able to extend to the middle while holding onto the edge with its two feet allowing it to balance.
We call that a "trophy" rat 🐀... Yeah, once they get to that size you'll need something else. Rats and mice are amazingly intelligent. No wonder they've survived for centuries.....

If they are getting too big for your bucket you might want to shield half of your bucket off (with the rotational axis being in the middle), that would force the rats to enter from one side. You then don't put the peanut butter the middle but on de end close to the shield. The rat will have to reach twice as far so I believe you will be able to then even catch the big ones. I guess that the bucket needs to be deep with soap water added to 1/3 or halfway as otherwise they will jump out.
My worry. I'm going to buy one in a bit. Its a crawlspace. I so badly want to use a 55. But it wouldn't fit. Have traps and now the exterminator said to try it. Will try anything. Im terrified of them so unfortunately want them dead. I wish i had it in me to be humane. Cant sleep at night. Guy said it's not about how dirty/clean you are that its a warm spot for them. My dog sniffs at vent all night. No urine/droppings in home but still a wreck right now. Now outside i would definitely buy a massive bucket. Im debating if i use water or antifreeze. I aint touching a thing. So i want them preserved/no water to freeze. My gut said the bucket might not even work but it's all i can fit down there.
If you can seal them into the space they will become much more desperate for that bait. Just make sure you have no other food or water that they can access. Even flexible water lines aren’t safe from a starving rat.
You can give that a try but the pvc may have more friction during the rolling process and it is more porous giving them a better chance to maintain their grip. If it's all you have though, I would still make one.

The rats were chewing in the wall under the fuse box. That can't be good. If i tell my landlord, she will simply say "rats are our friends". REALLY? I was feeding a pack of dogs that only came out at night in town. Some older more friendly ones to.. ,So I tied two 5 gal buckets to the chain link fence outside the railroad fence one day. I used nylon baling string. I put dogfood in one and water in the other. I kept checking the buckets daily when doing rounds at rail road drop yard. I started finding hoards of dead rats in water, once water was about halfway. So I did not want dead rats in the wild dogs water, so I simply put a piece of 2x4 in bucket and the nasty rats would not drown in water meant for stray animals.. So yes a five gallon bucket, rats CAN NOT climb up the smooth sides for nothin.. those rats are real dumb with some things. Remember water attracts animals as well. Like bees, snakes. So keep that in mind... Put buckets up against trees with twine at far side of property and fill 1/2 way to 3/4 full.. you will catch rats forsure... Just plain 🪣 5 gal buckets & twine to tie them to chain link fence or a tree or two is all ya need.. one day I found 7 dead big rats in bucket.. I discovered that method back in 2007 by accident.. Good luck boys, kill all those nasty rats... 🤠

I had a store bought trap and this one side by side in my barn where rats were getting into my seed. Every one I caught was in the bucket trap and zero in the store bought one. PS. I now have a cat as well..lol. Good luck as they can be quite destructive.....
Mice or rats? Mice are dumb, rats are smart. I've tried a version of this and rats use their tail to anchor themselves then stretch down into the bucket and grab the seeds I had.
My first attempt ended with the licked clean can was the only thing in the water. I did not secure the wire tightly enough and I think I need a bigger bucket Nasty rats, these guys chewed through my propane line which spewed into my trailer. That was the day after I finally killed the mouse after relocation efforts failed…same mouse. I had read rodents have large families. I think this was an attempted hit , I think I killed a “ made mouse”

Hey, until you’ve had mice and rats in your home, eating your bird’s food (they climb anything), try to be understanding. I’m a vegetarian, with reason. If you recycle the rodents into food for wild animals you complete the circle.

Some of the rats on the Mississippi River in New Orleans around my house are able to definitely jump out, so it's a must for me to have enough water at the bottom for them to drown I did use pvc on one the other two pop cans but last night big mistake not enough water or I left to much peanut butter on the outside too were they were not desperate enough I personally think to much bird seeds and peanut butter on the two ramps tonight in the utility room one ramp and very little like a small appetizer and it should work but I have pvc on this one with a coat hanger out side two pop cans plus I feel my ramp came off the last rung of the ladder. Well, I will not stop. I ordered glue from outside the states shot down in New York I got the email yesterday bummer
I love the simplicity of this design! Even though I'll fill my bucket halfway with water, some folks may not be cool with that, so I appreciate you addressing this matter with class.
I use a large paint roller, handle and all. Zip tie the handle to the top of bucket and brace the end of the handle to keep it upright and not sag into bucket. Smear peanut butter all over center if roller. I’ve caught several large rats over last two weeks. They climb chain link kennel I use as chicken coop, walk across paint roller handle, and out onto the roller. I dab peanut butter all around kennel leading to the bucket. I’ve been getting a rat every two-three days since using this technique. I reset everything after catching a rat. I’ve caught some huge ones. I think the fat paint roller may give them a little more confidence and you can really saturate it with peanut butter so more opportunity for them to fall in.

@@tallswede80 yep, the fuzzy roller absorbs some of the peanut butter and makes the rats have to commit more to balancing to get it all. I got small to medium ones regularly and about one jumbo for every 5 small/mediums.

We are having a rat problem, and our rats just laugh at 5gl buckets...they can jump right out of our waist high rolling trash bin. Until I put 8 inches of water in it. Now I'm the one laughing

Grease the bucket lip with vegetable oil and they have no chance. I've got chipmunks and squirrels this way. You can't grip what you can't apply pressure to.

Yes. I'm using a beige garbage can. I'm going to add unscented dish soap to the water ~ We have lots of racoons too that knock pails over. The garbage can has 2 handled on it ~ So I'll tie them to 2 fence posts ~ Add the ramp & peanut butter. I live near the beach where all the restaurants are ~ So yes ~ Due to this covid thing ~ The rats have moved in , under my shed. It's been a nightmare. They come up the back staircase onto the deck at night. Had to cut branches way back from 2 surrounding trees because they were literally jumping from the top branches onto the roof!! The rats just moved up the street 😐 🤦🙄😳

Thank you. I'm having same issue. They are getting into the animal feed. Chewed right through plastic storage container to get to bird seed but when I saw thier babies in the garden mid day I knew I had a big problem. I didn't want to kill the critters but the pheromones they leave behind...anything less than a 5 miles away release, with a body of water between us, and they will come right back I'd imagine. And releasing them feels like I'm just making it someone elses problem. I'm not hiking 5 miles out into the woods everyday with a rat or two. If I got a bunch at once...maybe. Torn about it but these things got to go. They are dirty and multiply fast. Thanks for the tutorial and best of luck to your anty down in Alabama.

I have had zero luck with these traps. I think it's because I am using a nonstandard bucket--it is five gallons, but it is tall and narrow. Also because I am using a jar that doesn't entirely cover the coat hanger. So far as I can tell, the rodents latch onto the rim of the bucket, stretch out to nibble the bait, and catch themselves on the coat hanger if they slip. And if really big rats are visiting, they can probably just jump out if they fall in. They are such intelligent creatures, been outsmarting me six ways from Sunday for months now!
If you have a trail camera, set it to video mode and see what they are doing. May help you form a new plan. They are good at figuring things out though.

I just use a bucket full of water, piece of 2x4 and black sunflower seeds. Make a trail up the 2x4 and float seeds on the water surface. I’m catching very big rats this way.

Took me less than five minutes to round up the supplies, build, bait and set up in the garage. No water to test if they can jump out. Water (with oil) if they can.
But it hasn’t caught a single rat/mouse yet. Bummer

I mentioned that in the video so people who prefer to relocate them can still participate. As a farmer, I can't afford to have then running wild so I've only used the water method....

Think this works better for mice than rats. I have a rat that is able to extend to the middle while holding onto the edge with its two feet allowing it to balance.
We call that a "trophy" rat 🐀... Yeah, once they get to that size you'll need something else. Rats and mice are amazingly intelligent. No wonder they've survived for centuries.....

If they are getting too big for your bucket you might want to shield half of your bucket off (with the rotational axis being in the middle), that would force the rats to enter from one side. You then don't put the peanut butter the middle but on de end close to the shield. The rat will have to reach twice as far so I believe you will be able to then even catch the big ones. I guess that the bucket needs to be deep with soap water added to 1/3 or halfway as otherwise they will jump out.
My worry. I'm going to buy one in a bit. Its a crawlspace. I so badly want to use a 55. But it wouldn't fit. Have traps and now the exterminator said to try it. Will try anything. Im terrified of them so unfortunately want them dead. I wish i had it in me to be humane. Cant sleep at night. Guy said it's not about how dirty/clean you are that its a warm spot for them. My dog sniffs at vent all night. No urine/droppings in home but still a wreck right now. Now outside i would definitely buy a massive bucket. Im debating if i use water or antifreeze. I aint touching a thing. So i want them preserved/no water to freeze. My gut said the bucket might not even work but it's all i can fit down there.

If you can seal them into the space they will become much more desperate for that bait. Just make sure you have no other food or water that they can access. Even flexible water lines aren’t safe from a starving rat.

I don’t have a metal tube like yours. Do you think it will work with a pvc pipe instead ?
You can give that a try but the pvc may have more friction during the rolling process and it is more porous giving them a better chance to maintain their grip. If it's all you have though, I would still make one.
You might try stringing two or three Red Bull cans together.

The rats were chewing in the wall under the fuse box. That can't be good. If i tell my landlord, she will simply say "rats are our friends". REALLY? Great idea
I was feeding a pack of dogs that only came out at night in town. Some older more friendly ones to.. ,So I tied two 5 gal buckets to the chain link fence outside the railroad fence one day. I used nylon baling string. I put dogfood in one and water in the other.
I kept checking the buckets daily when doing rounds at rail road drop yard. I started finding hoards of dead rats in water, once water was about halfway.
So I did not want dead rats in the wild dogs water, so I simply put a piece of 2x4 in bucket and the nasty rats would not drown in water meant for stray animals..
So yes a five gallon bucket, rats CAN NOT climb up the smooth sides for nothin.. those rats are real dumb with some things.
Remember water attracts animals as well. Like bees, snakes. So keep that in mind...
Put buckets up against trees with twine at far side of property and fill 1/2 way to 3/4 full.. you will catch rats forsure... Just plain 🪣 5 gal buckets & twine to tie them to chain link fence or a tree or two is all ya need.. one day I found 7 dead big rats in bucket..
I discovered that method back in 2007 by accident..

Have you caught rats in this trap. I'm having an issue with rats.
I had a store bought trap and this one side by side in my barn where rats were getting into my seed. Every one I caught was in the bucket trap and zero in the store bought one. PS. I now have a cat as well..lol. Good luck as they can be quite destructive.....
Mice or rats? Mice are dumb, rats are smart. I've tried a version of this and rats use their tail to anchor themselves then stretch down into the bucket and grab the seeds I had.
My first attempt ended with the licked clean can was the only thing in the water. I did not secure the wire tightly enough and I think I need a bigger bucket
Nasty rats, these guys chewed through my propane line which spewed into my trailer. That was the day after I finally killed the mouse after relocation efforts failed…same mouse. I had read rodents have large families. I think this was an attempted hit , I think I killed a “ made mouse”

Some of the rats on the Mississippi River in New Orleans around my house are able to definitely jump out, so it's a must for me to have enough water at the bottom for them to drown I did use pvc on one the other two pop cans but last night big mistake not enough water or I left to much peanut butter on the outside too were they were not desperate enough I personally think to much bird seeds and peanut butter on the two ramps tonight in the utility room one ramp and very little like a small appetizer and it should work but I have pvc on this one with a coat hanger out side two pop cans plus I feel my ramp came off the last rung of the ladder. Well, I will not stop. I ordered glue from outside the states shot down in New York I got the email yesterday bummer
