What an elegant kill-box trap! We used to make one on the same principle with a small square profile wooden box open at both ends. We used a deadfall over a vertical stick on the box stick about a foot long instead of the bow, and notched the trigger in a hole in the top of the box. We used old school tobacco pouches for the dead fall weight. Filled it up with rocks when you set the trap. Great job!
It would be quiet interesting to watch how he cooks and eats those animals. Of course, if he really does. Roasted squirrels used to be a favourite meal for aborigen people in Siberian Tayga.
Forest rats and squirrels are pretty normal food in lots of SE Asia. There are plenty of videos about trapping and eating rat in Vietnam. Hell, squirrel was a pretty common meal for me as a kid growing up in Iowa.

For fish and turtles it's called six pack ring.
You can use PVC pipe to replace the bamboo and a flexible branch to power the rope.
