  • Removing a broken S-type engine at home which didn't go as planed. This 1999 S-Type V8 has a very broken engine that needs to be removed and replaced with a good used unit. Can I remove the engine at home without a lift?

Adam, once you've made sure all the bell housing bolts are out use a prybar and separate the engine. What I think is happening is the locating dowel pins are stuck due to corrosion. The dowels are made of steel while the engine and bell housing are aluminium causing the corrosion due the dissimilar metals. I've had this happen lots of times in 45 years of doing mechanic work. You should be able to remove the engine without removal of the transmission.
In my experience its best to leave the vehicle on jack stands to make it easier to work on doing this procedure. So again use the pry bar and I think you'll thank me later for making this job a lot easier. I've worked on Jags in in the past so I know they can be challenging at times especially when it comes to engine removal. You're on the right track, you'll have the engine out in about 20 mins or thereabouts. Stay safe and let me know how you get on with this job.

Thanks! I have tried with a pry bar for about 30 minutes or so. It moves a tiny bit but it’s stuck together. If I try more I’m afraid I’ll damage something. It’s also that it’s not bolts that hold the torque converter onto the flex plate but studs which I think are also binding as I try to separate things.
The car has been moved to my other unit which has high ceilings now to try again. I have removed a few other engines, some Jag ones but this is the first time in an S-type. Always fun to try new things

Nice try. Here are some suggestions, having done numerous Jaguar engines in the past, although not an S type:
Out the Top without the transmission (where you are now):
Remove the radiator. Take up the weight of the engine using the lift, with the tilt set to horizontal. Pull the engine forward, so it separates from the transmission (you may need to get underneath and use a pry bar to get it to pop apart). Adjust the tilt to about 30 degrees up angle. Wiggle the engine until the first motion shaft is out of the bell housing. Adjust the tilt up to about 45 degrees and pull the engine forward. You'll now need to get the engine hoist all the way up to allow you to adjust the tilt to horizontal to remove the engine. If you don't have enough clearance, let the air out of the tires.
Out the top with the transmission:
Re-connect the transmission. Disconnect the driveshaft at the end of the transmission. Remove the radiator. Raise the car about 18" off the ground. Take up the weight on the engine hoist so that it's off the motor mounts. Pull the engine/transmission forward as far as it will go, adjusting the angle upwards (eventually, you'll hear the rear end of the transmission hit the ground). When you can't go any more, lower the car as far as you can. Adjust the angle to horizontal. Have a helper with a rope hold the tail end of the transmission so that it doesn't swing. Pull the engine/transmission forward, removing it entirely from the car.
Out the bottom engine and transmission together (this is how it's assembled):
Re-connect the transmission. Disconnect the driveshaft at the end of the transmission. Remove the radiator. Place support underneath the engine/transmission (i use wood blocks). Attach the engine hoist to the engine. Give it a small lift. Disconnect the steering. Drain the brakes and remove the front hoses. Unbolt the entire front suspension where it mounts to the body (in an XJ, it's not a whole lot of bolts). Remove the engine mounts from above. Lower the engine onto the blocks. Change the engine lift to the front of the body. Lift the body off the engine, which is now sitting on the blocks. I, personally, only did this once, and found it much harder than the out the top methods.

1st post! Cool! Glad to see work resuming on your S type vehicle! Been there and done that with a lot of cars over the years, always something that is still connected during an engine swap.
    You got this, great video!

Congrats on being first Mark! Yes there is always a wire or hose that you forget. It’s been moved now so it should be easier taking it all out together

As the motor is scrap you should remove cylinder heads, front timing transmission, alternator, Power steering pump, radiators and so on to have better access!

What a job. You have an incredible level of patience Adam. I think I would have taken one look at that and just said no. It makes older cars look even more straightforward than ever. I thought I had fun with replacing the engine in my W116 450SE Merc! Ha! Simple compared to this.

I like the realism of "This is the point I find out what I forgot to disconnect". :-)*
Wondering if mounting some powerful lights and an oldish cellphone on an electric skateboard would be a good way to examine the underside of cars without the hassle of jacking and creeping?

I like the idea with the old cell phone to inspect. Might be something that I’ll try sometime.

@@LivingWithAClassic P.S. On reflection, I think a tracked robot or possibly an RC car chassis might be a better carrier than an electric skateboard. explainingcomputers.com has some videos on building a robot whose use escaped me at the time, but with a slight adjustment might suit. The cellphone still seems part of the design, though.

Really interesting, I’ve never done an S type jag engine but I would guess you would need to remove the front panels and radiator to get clear access don’t take my word for it look it up. And I love your videos thank you

Hi , I have an s type r . I've owned it since new . Try as I may the car drivetrain needs freshening up. My question I have the whole front of the car disassembled would it be possible to remove the engine and trans together ? Sorry if this sounds crazy but it would save a ton of labor . I live in Florida and I'm amazed at how clean my car is from lack of salt and snow etc. Any advise be great . The trans needs work and engine has 230k miles . I drove this car everyday and want to save it.

Curious ! OK let me start by saying I have never removed an S Type engine, but every car I have worked on the torque converter remains with the engine attached to the flex plate but you disconnected it first, does the manual say to do that ?, also do be careful of the 'plastic' front grill, you may wish to remove it before pulling the engine and maybe the front bumper too.

    • @LivingWithAClassic
      @LivingWithAClassic  3 роки тому +1

I haven’t found a manual for these early cars, a year later they are a bit different.
One of the big issues is that it doesn’t have torque converter bolts but it’s studs that are quite long. So with everything at an angle it gets stuck I think. The car has moved now to my other unit where I will remove it all as a unit together

This v6 came out from the top leaving the gearbox in place - seems the engine mounts were removed from the top, maybe yours is jamming by having to lift too high before moving forward: ua-cam.com/video/cJ7p3Lxa-bs/v-deo.html
