Hi friends. I hope you are well. I'm out of shape and need to reset many things. No place to begin like the beginning. This practice never fails to help me connect to the instrument.

You're being out of shape is like the best that I can aim to in my dreams. I really need to take the patience to work on long tones, so hard not being bored.

Noticed you never make a full exhaul before breathing in, so is that right? Vocal trainers always mention, that we don't need "old" air, so it should be replaced with new.

    • @zzajbird598
      @zzajbird598 3 роки тому +2

there are a lot of musicians (myself included) that feel that those resets are crucial for break-throughs towards essential aspects of what music is all about. So....nothing wrong with that! And thank you for putting out these videos, you're an inspiration for many of us!

See that, Bob? People happily watch you play one note for 10 Minutes, so get rid of the good ol' perfectionism induced resistance and keep it coming (if you find the time, that is :) Also words of wisdom from little Bob - preach!

Getting back on it myself... Dark times - Covid-19, bereavements, no gigs or playing for 12 months. No motivation. Seven days warning for a sit-in gig/jam was all I needed to get back on my horn. It felt so joyous to reconnect with myself and my buddies.
This is all I did for a week; long tones... fingers were more or less up to the job.
Long tones, thinking about Miles getting his tone back ("5 years..."). Every day will be better.
So reassuring to see that a great player does the same!

You see, the approach is what matters, nay, the intention! Music therapy indicates that we must try to go back to basics to find our center. The center of our Tone, Breathing, Sound, Timbre, Rythm, etc. In this video you somewhat show what your objective is, while using certain filters. The ability to be aware of your sorroundings, stopping your deep concentration and excercise to attend something else, patience, and calm PLUS the respect and empathy that you show to your kid at the end, that requires work, discipline and care for what you love. Any musician or person, for that matter, has to learn when to hear and listen, an learn everything you can from everything. Adults from kids and viceversa. Great video, played along with my trumpet, low and long tones help to relax the lips and chops. Thank you and have a great day!

Long tones at every practice warm up. Never forget the basics. I once heard Sonny Rollins say he enjoyed playing just long tones and scales all day. If it's good enough for him, it's good enough for me...

Hello Bob, I‘ m a student in school. I often don’t know how to manage all the things together with practice. I want to practice 1-2 or even 3 hours a day. I think you made a vlog “how to manage all the things” or something. I really can Say that beside almost every vlog from you over the years, this one helped me soo much. I‘m so thankful that you’re sharing your knowledge for us for free. This has an immense impact on my practice over the years. I just wanna say thank you. In addition to all your solo albums and snarky puppy stuff with this vlog together your mind your approach and your knowledge you‘re one of the completist artists these days. Thank you 🙌✌️

Thank you so much for putting this up. I just played along with the clarinet. Started on open G and continued with low G after a while.
You could probably explain in 10 seconds what to do, but it really helps my motivation to just follow along.
Looking forward to more practicing videos like this or maybe even longer sessions / live streams. No need to talk and explain even - if you don't want to.

    Tonality, control and articulation, baby!

Thanks Bob, great exercise to play along with and focus on breathing and tone. Also interesting to use ( or abuse maybe ) and play all different intervals along with your G on the Video. Trying to make it an as stable and perfect sounding interval as possible. And trying to "per-hear" the interval/ note I'm about to play against the G. The more dissonant ones were kind of hard to do for me.

Comment like number at 666. Didn’t want to change it. I do this with 4 beats before going down chromatically into bar 2 and three. So 12 beats three notes, then I take a full bar breath. Go down to the bottom of the horn from G an octave above Bob’s G. Then start again at G and go up into altissimo. I only have a 5th /6th range of altissimo (G - Eb). Then I do chromatic down and back G -F# G but increasing the width of the intervals. To bottom then top of the horn. Takes about 20 minutes. Then overtone Rascher type stuff. If I’m really into it might do crescendos diminuendos etc. Full on it’s about an hour. Sometimes I get around to playing music 😄.
Btw ‘When It’s Over’ from Hindsight is so beautiful. Just been listening in the car.👍
