One thing to note - if the good guys are thwarted by actual planning from the bad guys, instead of their own lack of braincells, it MAKES THE BAD GUYS A BIGGER THREAT. In the first Extraction, things go wrong because the gang ambushes their transport out of there. It shows the villains as both smart and capable of taking out even experienced fighters, upping the tension for our protagonist. In this, things go wrong... because the people they're escorting are completely unprepared for an evacuation they themselves requested. It doesn't show us anything about the villain and it makes the sympathetic characters less sympathetic.
Pretty sure falling into a river in Bangladesh with a open wound would be more than enough to kill someone, even if the wound would have been survivable.
I disagree that the main reason the action didn't work in extraction 2 is idiot plot. That's only part of it. The main reason is actually that the action sequence in the first was positively motivated by character and consequence. Getting the kid to trust him, navigating an action sequence and car chase with a dependent, fighting the guy who's supposed to be his equal, etc. all of it a means to show positive character growth and interaction. Then take the sequences from the second movie, and it's more just an excuse for action to happen. Why didn't the kid trust him in the first one? Because who the hell would trust a guy like that who just shows up out of nowhere after being kidnapped in the first place. He has no reason to believe he isn't being kidnapped again. Whereas, why did the kid in the second movie blindly idolise his father? So the action could happen. The dude repeatedly beat on him and his mother, and his adoration for his father is explained how? Well it's not, really. He just idolizes his father because that's what is necessary to create conflict. There's no reason for any of it. I think the dumb decisions are a symptom of the same problem - there's no character motivation for anything that happens. It only happens because it results in a cool action sequence. That leaves the whole movie feeling like a disconnected and frustrating mess. The first movie is characters reacting to a situation and forcing their will on the plot. The second movie is the plot forcing characters into circumstances that don't make sense.
Pretty much agreeing. What I liked about the first Extraction was that the violence held itself in a semblance of believability, it was reasonably realistic, thus feeling dramatic and really dangerous. What happened in the sequel was purely money-driven drivel with the express purpouse of generating brain dead action, which thus lands in the meaninglessness of super hero movies. One side effect is of course that the concept of script loses all meaning as well, so it's essentially written on the back of a recepipt, with a crayon, by a baboon, who's drunk, and blind, newly divorced, and also recently was told that you-know-who is his father (NOOOOOOO!!!). One of the other really good movie channels did a good piece a while ago about storytelling in violence and action scenes, this is so much a case of that. The first movie actually had a story being told in the violent bits, while the second forgot to include one at all.
Fantastic vid as always. A writing partner of mine suggested the "unsanctioned" fix that Mission Impossible can't get away from - if you just had the wife reach out to Jake-straction covertly and the whole opp be off the books with no funding, have Hemsworth barely make it into the prison through basic social engineering and a few bribes, suddenly the back half might click into place. The set up and pay off as they stand are from different films imo. All it needed was a structural edit to rewrite the intro to match the rest of the story methinks (or you don't make them make obvious mistakes but it's an action first flick so presumably that was the heart of the early development)
14:50 See, when you posed the question, my first guess was "Ovi, the person he spent the entire first film spending blood and sweat to keep alive". I would also have guessed "one of his teammates from the first film, who has been/is about to be captured by the gang that's still out for revenge over their mission"; or, if changing countries is a necessity, "who's flown to another country and been caught by a gang there who plans to sell them back to Bangladesh for the first gang to take revenge on".
That's a good point it could have more than just his wife. Like if Nik or Yaz got caught he would have gone after them. Ovi too altho then it really would have a repeat of the first film lol. Still think the wife would have worked best
I like this idea much better than fridging the ex-wife, especially since we don't even know her. But I don't see why the person he extracts has to be personally connected to him at all. It's already established that's what he does. I'm sure he's got medical bills to pay 😂 But seriously, they could be a super important whistle blower or diplomat or researcher whose death would impact a large population, so keeping them alive saves more lives. That should raise the stakes enough to convince him to come out of retirement
Same, I couldn’t understand why he hated that one shot intro action scene. If you’re gonna watch an action movie, the action is going to be the first priority. Do I think it’s a very good movie? No. Do I think it does exactly what it promised? Yes. The first one was narratively better, but that’s a bonus for action films. Plus in this movie, he’s extracting 3 people, it’s not as easy as telling a teenage boy to hide behind him when there are 3 big targets to shoot at. On top of that, if the wife and her kids were really experts at the extraction, what would that mean? That they’ve got some sort of military training? In this scenario (where a young girl is involved, much younger than the boy in extraction 1), there are bound to be errors. You can’t expect a preteen child to be perfect in these scenarios at all, her dropping her thing was not anything out of the ordinary. On top of all of that, this movie was pretty much just huge action sequences with a bit of narration in the start and middle. How much more do you want from an action film?😂 Considering that this was released on Netflix, I’m impressed even more because in comparison to their general standards, this movie was an adrenaline rush to watch at the very least.
They probably never would have been able to get it greenlit because you need star power to make a film like this work, but extraction 2 following the kid Chris rescued instead could have been very interesting. Maybe Hemsworth could have appeared in flashbacks or dream sequences to give him guidance or something like that.
I you want action to be good in a movie I highly recommend (what in my opinion are the best action movies ever made) The Raid 1 and 2. Part 2 has even more insane fighting sequences (though part 1 is more compactly made) and even a good (albeit simple and nothing new perse) story imo. I never get tired of watching them and its always at the top of my recommendation list when people ask me for the best masterfully made brutal action movies I would say it is definitely an analysis worth by you on how to do good action

While your points are correct, I still love watching Extraction 2. In my opinion, these movies aren't meant to be deep, profound stories, but are designed to show cool action scenes. I watched these movies because Tyler looks badass and the fighting is entertaining. That's all I think it needs. If we had these same problems in something like Breaking Bad or The Last of Us, then I'd be upset and fully back you though.
