Simpler Version
1. Click and hold at the same time "Menu" & "Volume Up"
2. Make sure that the remote your trying to pair is near the "Apple TV Device"
3. At the right hand corner of your "Apple TV" screen will and should say if you have paired it

Thanks I put mine in the wash so it works on my family room tv and not my bedroom. I just used the iphone as a remote. Thanks so much. You probably don't need to pair with your TV you just point to it and try raising the volume, it should work actually.
