Those crazy Super Potato prices haha! I bought a complete great condition Links Awakening DX for half the price of that cartridge. Wow, that Pokemon Red was a great deal. I would've picked it up too. Great video and editing!
That sounds like a great deal for links awakening dx these days. You know it super potato is nuts. Yes quite happy with the pokemon red pickup. Thank for the kind words man.
This is the kind of video people need to see. Hard numbers and one-to-one examples of how ridiculous Akihabara is. I just came back from a trip to Yokosuka (about an hour south of Tokyo by train) this past weekend and saw those loose Pokemon games (yellow, blue, green, gold, silver) for less than 500 yen at a Wattman store (Kanagawa prefecture's local version of Hardoff).
On the walk there from funabashi station as I speak! Here in japan for two weeks and I was looking to buy a gbc and crystal to play on the trains! Really glad I found this thank you so much for the tip off 😊 if you see this… any tips on where to get a gbc console around here?
Great video Scruffy! You got to love the great life lessons learned from Ghostbusters 2 on the Gameboy: "Don't let your partner get stuck behind a doorway or piece of furniture!" Something not every parent tells their child.
Very nicely arranged and helpful guide. When I'll finally be able to visit Japan I'll have an extra reason to get out of the more "touristic" areas, something that luckily I always try to do when travelling. Thanks!
I'm traveling to Japan in about a week and I'll hunt some Pokémon games for my collection. Thank you for this information! I'll be looking for Surugaya and OFF stores on my trip to see what I can find :D
It will be really hard to find any with a fair price and in good condition. I work and live not far away from Akihabara, so I went to Akihabara for Pokemon games 5 times a week. Until now, I still have not found a Pokemon Pikachu for Game boy. But if you do not care too much about the condition, there is still a lot that you could buy.
I would've cleaned out a lot of those GB games that I don't have, since the prices are quite nice at that shop outside of Tokyo. That Super Potato on the other hand, can take their prices and shove it where the sun don't shine. Also another trip for some donoffee!
I paid over the odds in Akihabara but I wasn't finding the stuff I wanted, so blew my budget in the last few days and glad I did otherwise I wouldn't have come back with the things that I thought I was going to be tripping over in the street!
I would definitely agree with the sentiment that Akihabara is great for window shopping or grabbing something if your absolutely desperate for it. But you mightn't need to go too far outside of Tokyo to get some deals. You'll definitely get a deal in any of the electronic thrift stores (Book-Off, Hobby-Off etc.) that is outside of Akihabara or else try looking out for the generic 'TV Game' hole in the wall/Mom and Pop shops that are littered around. Some good deals to be had there! When I was in Japan last year, I didn't buy a lot in Akihabara. I also went to DenDen town in Osaka and the Super Potato there wasn't much better either. I walked into a Book-Off in Dotonbori and picked up some heavy hitters (SML series, Pokemon Gen 1 and 2 games and Zelda) altogether for less than what a single cart would've cost me in Super Potato
I think the main cause of the price spike in Akihabara is the fact that now foreign tourist are visiting at pre-"chinacough" levels. Give it a couple of years and you will see those prices in outer cities too.
@Scruffy Lookin RGB hi, i really like your UA-cam videos and I was just wondering if you could please tell me the exact name of the second shop you went to in Chiba as what I typed in that came up with subtitles got me know where with finding it on a Google search
I always watch your videos just in pure awe...I was planning on coming to visit in 2020 and we all know how that went! Then was supposed to come this January but we were expecting our first child that's now 4 months old so not sure when I'll actually be able to come and visit...but when I do...please take me to all the places outside Tokyo and do some game hunting! I fear for my wallet though haha big love form the UK
Thank you I really appreciate your support glad you enjoy the videos. Im certain you will be here some time in the near future and when you do you will have a splendid time game hunting and enjoying the japanese culture.
In us it’s even worst now. Your better off getting a rom version more then anything. I do blame youtuber like MJR doing videos about being cheap and probably why prices are higher but who knows..
@@ScruffyLookinRGB yah we don’t have nothing like in Japan where retro games is half good prices especially in box ones. You’ll be giving more then a thousand to get one like new.
very good deal on that CIB pokemon red...gb 2 is almost a straight fc port...both this hal laboratory games are way better than nes gb2...thats for sure! SUPER POTATO is nuts with the prices and we all know it!
I think we all saw this coming starting for some time. Too many resellers and collectors competing for the same games and not having either the time or knowledge to venture more outside of the usual areas of Tokyo (and Osaka).
The crazy thing is that some of these foreign tourist resellers/collectors still think they're getting a good deal when paying Akihabara prices because of how weak the yen is and the duty-free tax exclusion. So super potato, mandarake, surugaya, etc. will continue to charge what they charge.
The Pokemon red boxed version was reasonably priced. There were games at more affordable prices. Some prices were ridiculous. maybe you could make a video about your own game collection.
Yes, that is very true while some games are affordable others are unreasonable too it is always the case. That is a good idea for a future video thanks.
No in Tokyo 😂 I bought a gameboy color for ¥6600 at a hard off out near Yokohama way, there was two and I’m after another so I’m gutted I didn’t pick up both! I saw them for over ¥20000 in Super Potato and RGC, I didn’t hire the car specifically to go looking in hard offs but it was cheaper to hire the car and buy the gameboy outside of Tokyo than to buy the gameboy in Tokyo 😂
Yes it's kind of a double edged sword when one mentions a shop like this it helps folks find good deals but it also kind of dries up the well so to speak. I'm glad you liked the shop👍🏻✨️
this is the problem with the hobby and the community as a whole right now. the actual old hardware even parts are going for a premium these days its sad. tens of millions of these things exist but everyone thinks "oh its old/ retro it will fetch top dollar". the issue with that mentality is most of the people just want to relive nostalgia not resell for a higher price like the seller is anticipating (because that is the seller's own tactic already).
the more people post these game hunting videos in Japan showing the honeypots... the more the deals will dry up. please stop. everyone knows super potato is expensive. they get the most free advertising. Hard-off has gotten almost as expensive as super potato this past year. Now every fame seeking youtuber is recording all of the game shops outside of the major cities. If someone is devoted to the hunt enough they'll find it on their own. These shops will get more known and raise their prices because of videos like this...

4k yen for a pokemon game is just insulting...
Tell me about it man.

So cool! Same place had a gbc in the glass case. Hope you find some good stuff.

Prices in Akihabara seem out of hand. I wonder how much this is affected by Japan opening up again fully after COVID?
Yes indeed. A lot has to do with the high dollar and also the opening of the borders.
Thank you for this. I’m going to Japan next month. I’ll adjust my plan to just get OSTs in Akihabara and elsewhere for the games
Glad i could be a help😉

Good point. Akihabara has a good selection but unfortunate it is so expensive. As long as you are happy with what you got that it great.
@@ScruffyLookinRGB only regret is not getting Chase H.Q. on Saturn. Kept telling myself I would find it elsewhere but didn't... DOH!

Yes there are many tourists but i hope the prices dont get out of hand everywhere.
Just out of curiosity, where do you find these retro shops to hunt in?
Experience and google.

Chiba Kanteidan Funabashi, on maps its a different sign but thats becuase they have recently changed it.

Messing with my retro game deals is like messing with my emotions.
Love your content
Thank you.
What was the location of the first thrift store you went to in the video with the Pokémon for 680 yen? Thank you!
It's in the description, and actually, its the second store 👍

Dang sounds rough being a game collector in the states. I dont know if it is the fault of MJR i think it just is what it is.

It is already cool but how much are the prices

ironic how it’s called super potato Lol They probably see the tourists as Potatoes they can easily rip off
Aren't we all just a bunch of superpotatoes floating around in a burlap bag universe?😉🥔✨️
