From the beginning at the time I had a feeling that Serena was going to win the tournament especially when discovered that she already won the title before in 2003 & 2005 I said 2007 is hers. She had that quirky streak going as she won the title again 2 years later in 2009. I remember how disappointed she was when she lost in the quarter finals to a player she said had never heard of at a small tournament a week before the 2007 Australian Open to think that loss gave her that extra motivation to step her level back up.

She was ranked 81 at the start of the tournament and when she reached the final, people like Pat Cash said 'A great run but it's over now'. She made Pat Cash (and others) eat their words that day!
this suggests that Serena had a bad opposition, weak. she is not the greatest with such competition and such weak opponents as Sharapova, Azarenka, Kvitova, Li, and other two-time slam champions like Zvonareva and Safina and Wozniacki. Now Serena wouldn't benefit from half of what she has. Osaka, Rybakina, Iga, Sabalenka, Gauf and others, now they would wipe their feet on her. Serena is not the greatest, she is the queen of the weak, slow court era.

I was 16 when I saw this match living in Uk at the time stayed up late so nervous for my girl Serena wasn’t sure if she could do it boy did she shut me up!!! And I was gladly to shut up was at edge of my seat best feeling ever seeing this win 🏆 Serena proved when she is at her best and focus. Nothing will stop her and that’s what I love about her.
It didn’t even matter that Serena was unseeded and facing the world number one Sharapova. Serena was so focused and gave Maria absolutely nothing to work with. Serena’s serving was incredible too. Much different match than the Australian Open 2005 Semifinal between them
Never get tired of watching this match. Cannot believe this match was 17 years ago. I remember staying up late watching it live as a 18 year old. The match finished so quick. After this match Sharapova knew she would never defeat Serena again. Most of their matches 2007-2019 Serena won all of them and they were very one sided only in 2008 Charleston on clay it went 3 sets which Serena won 6-1 in the 3rd.
I remember watching this match. Serena had poor form and was recovering from injuries. A lot of people were writing her off and saying Sharapova was the favorite. Serena wanted to prove them wrong in the most brutal way possible 😂

This match was due to the commentators trashing Serena the entire tournament and saying she was out of shape and finished. She was looking to prove a point in the final and Maria just happened to be the opponent but she was looking to wipe the floor with whoever it was. Sharapova actually had the advantage in their match ups until this point and let their previous match up slip away after having multiple match points. That coupled with getting crush by Serena here and Miami a couple months later really sealed the deal and Maria no longer believed she could actually beat Serena or close her out. Should Serena have the better h2h yes, was Serena just better absolutely, should Maria still have a few more wins over her yes.
I remember this time very well. The media kept saying that Serena was past her prime and she was “washed up”. Little would they know that their beloved Russian would never beat Serena again.

An Australian former player said she lacked the attention span to succeeed, and would never win another championship. Serena made no noise and didn't respond verbally to the critics, she just let her racket do the talking and man did it talk. She however saved the best for last and it was one of the best finals I had ever seen.
The queen knows how to celebrate! the best serve of all time, and much faster/better movement than Maria. And those horrible serves by Maria right smack in the middle of the box, what was that? It's amazing Maria won what she did considering her movement abilities....and she caught Serena off guard at that first Wimbledon final matchup.....

Maria played a very bad match at the AO 2007, and Serena played a great match. Those two often go hand in hand. If Sharapova had played better, it wouldn't have been as easy for Serena. She might still have won, but we'll never know. What happened in later matches is a completely different story.

Now everyone is in the top 50, they can serve as hard as Serena, only they move faster and hit more powerfully. Now any of their top 10 would simply destroy Serena. Don't cry, look for a new idol.
