But you don’t say what DAMAGE untreated bipolar does…like to the brain, I have heard that. My husband is bipolar 2 undiagnosed, they diagnosed him as unipolar depression after a major psychotic breakdown, they haven’t seen him acting hypomanic, only I have and I don’t count. They just thought he was ‘BETTER’ after 6 months in hospital and outpatient counselling for depression, and congratulated him for his recovery!
I was also diagnosed as having just depression for yearrrssss. Even though I insisted that diagnosis didn’t feel correct, but they still gave me just antidepressants. Usually antidepressants for a bipolar person are not great because they can cause you to go into a hypo manic/manic and depressive cycle. This happened the first time I went to see a psychiatrist, I didn’t realize I was going through a manic episode, but I felt the depression really badly. I stopped taking the meds and felt better. Then about a year later I went to an outpatient program which I was in for about 4months, in which I saw a psychiatrist every week. Same thing happened when he put me on antidepressants again (even though he was aware of what happened the last time), again felt better when I stopped taking them. Another year and a half passed and I JUST got diagnosed as being bipolar 2 after years of knowing that’s what it was. I got a second opinion from another psychiatrist and they concluded it was bipolar 2 as well, especially because I reacted quickly and so well when put on Lithium. Sometimes getting diagnosed is a looooooong process. Sometimes it takes years, and just looking and looking for a psychiatrist and therapist team who will actually listen when you advocate for yourself. What helped me advocate for myself was having my therapist, go through the DSM and explain and read the categories you would have to fit in order to be considered bipolar. She did this so I could advocate for myself, so I wouldn’t shy away from standing up for myself and getting the help I needed. I wish you and your spouse the best of luck, it’s not easy being bipolar but it’s not easy being the spouse of someone who is bipolar. Getting the correct diagnosis can be frustrating, but don’t give up, getting the correct medication can really really feel like a whole new lease on life.
Define "untreated". From where I stand; "treatment" = euphemism 4 medication. Speaking of such; y is medication MANDATORY/REQUIRED as "treatment" 4 mental health conditions (NOT "ILLNESSES") but OPTIONAL 4 other health conditions (especially/including insulin 4 diabetes)? That approach RE: mental health "treatment" ISN'T TREATMENT @ ALL!!!!!! IT'S PUNISHMENT!!!!!
