Huge Criticism: If you're going to bring up how you should turn the battery off before disassembling the joy con, mention it in the beginning of the video and not near the end. My left joy con no longer connects simultaneously with the right one, and I'm certain the reason why was because I dismantled it while the battery was still on.
PSA: Watch video fully before you do the repair. Some edits are super quick and you can miss a step and rip a ribbon cable! It's a helpful video but definitely one you need to pause/rewind at points :)
Agreed. This was the "top" video UA-cam showed me, I didn't rip a cable, but I didn't have to disconnect them in the first place, which another video instructed (wish I had seen THAT one first) and ribbon cables are the bane of my existence, since I have giant hands.
Yes, ribbon cable part is given short shrift. Unclear what to do, what to look for. My solution is... look for a different video with a more precise presentation.
My little girl dropped the left joy-con and everything worked except the joystick would not click left, to replace it would have cost £60, I have no experience with electronics what so ever but after watching this video I thought I would give it a go. A complete novice like me replaced the broken joystick in about ten minutes with this video. Absolutely brilliant.....Thankyou!!!
I’ve been crying since 4pm because I couldn’t get the bottom one in (the one underneath the battery and stuff) thank you for showing me how to replace it!
I don’t usually comment on videos but thank you very much for keeping this short but knowledgeable and to the point! Your video was literally half the time the others were!
This was super helpful. I didn’t even disconnect any of the ribbon cables other than the ones for the sticks themselves.(wouldn’t recommend unless your willing to risk a break) and it went pretty smooth hardest part was reconnecting the antenna but that was mostly due to my super cheap plastic tweezers. But yeah absolutely better than shipping them off to Nintendo for who knows how long or dropping $80 for a new pair.
Just got done replacing mine, thanks! Although I do notice a split second delay on the replacement joystick versus the original one, not sure if anyone's noticed.
thanks a lot!! was a bit tricky to figure out how the latches opened, but it worked out in the end! turned out my right joycon just needed the callibration, so i still got 3 spare thumb sticks for future need! soo nice to not spend over 60 dollars on a set set of joycons (cause for me, i figured i might as well just replace them both) and on top of that, just fun to learn and try something new!
I want to know one thing. The reparation works as a permanent solution to the drifting problem or does it appear again in a future. If so, how long did it last?
hi! i can help by saying, if the issue with the joycons having the joysticks they came with wear out was just with the *joystick*, then it could be possible a different joystick from a different manufacturer may wear out less when you replace it. but i would say, they seem pretty delicate so after a certain amount of use they will likely still need to be replaced. it depends how often you use them
Okay cool I opened the joycon and i see the reason the lights weren't lighting up or anything is because the sl/sr ribbon underneath the battery was completely bent and now I've snapped it, just great
My was slightly different but I did it I was so happy so my daughter will have fun with it again but I didn't figure out the small small small latch and until the last peice Thank goodness I got it figured out thank you
I know this is an old video but I should let you know this: you saved my TOTK Joy-Con. I was wondering why my right one wasn’t working so I decided to follow your video and the moment I opened it up I noticed the bottom cable ribbon was extremely loose. Like I could ever so gingerly remove it some it’s socket and out it came out. I thought I was gonna have to be sitting down for a while trying to trouble shoot… Nope just a loose cable. Edit: the only reason I was on your video is because my right joy comes wouldn’t work.
Just went through this while playing fire emblem yesterday with my pro controller ordered in some backup wireless controllers first problem I've had since getting the lite during lockdown other than that everything is cool ❤❤
I followed this on one of my joycons and the top ribbon on the back plate of it, the clip it goes into doesn’t stay in and flips up by itself so it wont stay in place
FYI: Some joycons do not have a “latch” for the first ribbon, you can just wiggle them out. I straight up broke the casing for the first ribbon trying to undo a latch that wasn’t there. Should have watched more than one tutorial :*(
My [right] joycon works after i out it back together but now when it is finding the switch it has light 1 and 3 flashing instead of going up and down from 1 through 4
Don't put ribbon that above the battery above! put it in the hole exactly above the connector and between battery! Because of that one of mine was bent over! And it started to disconnect randomly and after dissambling again it was teared apart.
Slow down, dude. You're video is more concerned with quick edits to match the cadence of your voice than it is with actually taking the time to demonstrate properly. I broke the ribbon cable connector at 1:37 because it's difficult to see where you lifted up as you described (zoom would have been helpful there), and I'm watching full-screen on a 28" 4k monitor. Also, the 2nd joycon can actually be replaced without removing any of the ribbon cables, which I did quite easily (albeit carefully). Thanks all the same.
This really helped me out, n saved me 70 bucks in getting new joycons but overall the left controller was sooo much harder to change the stick than the right, idk why but for me the right had a different location for the antenna slightly makign it way easier to deal with
thank you so much, especially for linking the kit! i replaced the joystick on the right hand side of my precious animal crossing joycon and will save the other one for if and when the left one breaks. one thing, i could not see what or where the "latch" was to release the ribbon cables, so i did not figure it out where it was until i was already done ^_^"" that given, it is possible to replace it without removing all of the ribbon cables. the only required one was the one connected to the old/new joystick. albeit probably easier than the left one, i was able to turn and maneuver the inside plastic part with the very delicate ribbon cable attached without removing it. i simply worked around the plastic pieces with the ribbon cables still connected for ease of putting it back together and not bothering with reattaching them again later (as you said you had trouble with that). maybe it just works better if you have small hands ^_^"" would not recommend risking breaking the ribbon cables, but it is possible! thank you for this video! very straightforward. i was able to avoid spending $200 for new animal crossing joycons. the only thing that was not made clear to me was the 'latch' , but maybe i wasnt looking close enough. also... magnetic screws are a godsend thanks for the relatively short and simple explanation! perfect for people who arent too knowledgeable about technology repairs/etc.
Okay so it fixed my joy stick problem, I don't have an issue with any of the buttons but now my switch doesn't recognize when the controller gets put onto it. EDIT: I figured it out. The bottom ribbon cable was loose.
My brand new OLED left analog is making spring noise when pushed to the left on the 2 day after buying it . What to do . It sounds annoyng ! The right analog is silent just the left one is noisy
Okay so it fixed my joy stick problem, I don't have an issue with any of the buttons but now my switch doesn't recognize when the controller gets put onto it.
At 1:35 - can anyone tell me what this ribbon cable is for? Replacing a buddy's batteries, all went smoothly (no ripped cables lol). This *looks* like it's for an antenna, but it certainly isn't the main antenna. After a cursory glance on Google, I can't find a diagram for all the replacement parts to reverse-engineer what this might be.
My ribbon cable of the right joycon ( the one that connects the button and seal the slot of the battery) is too short and doesn't make me grab it with pinchers due to the small room and the fact that it's twisted and goes backwards inside the slot. I'm stucked there. Any idea?
For me, my brother always attacks it so I have to keep it in an unknown location so I put it in a candy box and apparently one of the candies melted and went inside the zl button so it’s not pressing properly.
What would be the problem if the right joycon works fine when connected to switch but doesn't work wirelessly when disconnected? I followed this tutorial so I could open it up. Took a cursory look around and didn't see the antenna disconnected. And nothing seemed out of place. Don't know what I'm to look for outside of a potentially disconnected cable
Can someone help me my left joy stick has water damage I think and when I connect it to the switch it connects like makes the sound but it doesn’t say connected and I can’t use it I have a ps4 so I’m not bothered getting new ones for 100 bucks

You should always watch the whole video before attempting. YDI.
Dude thats not even a huge problem
@@monyty1542 yes it is bro, it means he can only use it alone
I have the same problem. Mine left controller cannot connect to the right one after replacing the joy con. Any solution?
always disconnect power in anything you are disassembling, #1 step in every eletronic disassembly
Thanks
I’m glad you went through both the right and left joy-cons. Usually the tutorials only show the left.

Worst hardware to ever been produced in the console era. Can't believe how cheap and low quality they made the joycons

Awesome job. Can be intimidating trying something new like this. Good to hear you got it done.
I’m having trouble with the latches! Any tips?
I'd like to know too, can't get one to close
My joycon wouldn't physically connect after DIY repair. Checked your video. Little ribbon wrong way around. Works great now. Thanks!!!
Awesome tutorial, right what you need and straight to the point~

I had my left joystick replaced and it is still going strong 6 months later and it's endured ~ 200 hours of gameplay time idk if that helps
It will have the same problem at some point
I could really use a troubleshooting guide for when the joy con doesn't seem to power up anymore :D.
That happened to me and I went and reput the ribbons. They are kinda tricky
Step one: buy new joycons
Step two: profit
These golden screws are from hell
2 years later and still so helpful, thanks so much for the concise and clear instruction! Redirecting this to my boyfriend for his joycons as well
Thanks for watching and sending to your friend.
Now there is a sequal to breath of the wild lol
Big thanks for the help! Great video !
the most informative nintendo repair video I've seen. do you think you could do a repair on a joycon with a broken R botton?
Dude mine is broken too
My L button doesn’t work :[
Thank you!!!! This definitely helped me. Now to try the right joy con… lol that one seems a bit more tricky
Just having an issue where the y and +/- buttons don't stick out right after closing the casing
They’re spring loaded, you might’ve lost the spring
Thank you very much my friend, I followed your footsteps and did succeed in reparing mines.
Great as an overall tutorial as well! Replaced the full case and you made it so much easier!
I have now damaged my ribbons. I was unaware which way you were pulling on you latches
Exactly, he should have shown it better and emphasised it better
Worked for me, thanks mate! 10 minutes and job done. I've used a piece of Amazon's hard brown envelope's cardboard.

Probably won't do it but I'm gonna watch this out of curiousity.

this is a good question. Ik its 5 months old but I will get to repairing mine soon and will let you know

What’s the difference between the screwdriver you used and another tiny screwdriver?
The screws have a Y-shaped indentation, unlike the + or - shaped indentations more commonly seen. These screwdrivers have a head that fits in there.
