Raven being the Spring Maiden the entire time pretty much confirms that when an individual is using the Maiden power, their eyes do the flaming effect. Whenever Vernal supposedly used the Maiden powers, Raven was beside her with her mask on. Only once she didn’t have it on which was during the lightning strike, in which everyone in the camp was concentrating on attacking Yang and Weiss.

@@gh0xttherebel She even spelled it out to Cinder as well, but almost nobody caught it... She called out Cinder by saying, "a maiden with a surname so appropriate she probably chose it herself." The decoy Spring Maiden, Vernal, is similarly named - "Vernal" means, "relating to Springtime."
I noticed that in the last episode for the first time and it blew my mind
I love Yang, with only one arm and without throwing a single punch she delivers one of the harshest beat downs I've ever seen.
Nearly 19 years of 'WTF, Mom?!' went into that. Delivered with the passion of a Branwen and the calm surgical precision of a Xiao Long. Doesn't matter what the rest of the show has shown. To me that was Yang's graduation.
Definitely a O-O moment

Quick clarification, when Yang says "did you kill her too?" she's not referring to Summer, she's referring to the old, more respectable Raven.

@@Bakemer94 The fighting for her team and tribe part is a qualifier to the previous statement about her not knowing Raven. Grammatically, the whole thing has the same meaning as it would if you put the middle part in parentheses or deleted it outright. The Raven that Tai talked about was complicated but fought for what she believed in, but that Raven is nowhere to be found now. Yang is insulting her by implying that in order to survive Raven killed the version of herself that cared.
SPOILER:
Moreover we know from later seasons that Raven was not responsible for Summer's death, so there's no reason Raven would act like she did if that's who Yang was talking about.
honestly these episodes have some of my absolute FAVORITE lines in the whole series.
"I don't need him to hurt... I just need him to *GO DOWN!"*

the entirety of raven and yangs confrontation, and of course, "You won't find it there, because Vernal isn't the spring maiden. *I am."*
The thing that always breaks my heart is that no matter what shot team JNR is in, they always leave a space for pyrrha, it still breaks my heart
Also in episode 11, the ending scene when the spear disappears, she is in the EXACT same pose as pyrrha was 😭

Just so you are aware, the spear that hits Weiss that Cinder made, is Phyra's spear.... when cinder gripped phyra's spear in volume 3 and snapped it with her heat, she is now able to recreate that weapon because she 'held' it.

Man oh man, that cliffhanger at the end, really throws your brain into a loop!!! Like, seriously, I remember watching Volume 5 so well cuz that's where I first started when I got into RWBY. Chapter 11 was the newest episode out and MY GOD it was so painful to wait a week for the next chapter to come out... AND THEN CHAPTER 12 HIT ME EVEN HARDER CUZ OF THAT SECOND CLIFFHANGER!! Literally got jebaited twice lmao. Literally can't wait for the next part of the finale ;)

For me chapter 11 hit even worse because as I remember Crwby went on holiday break the next week so instead of waiting one week like usual to know Weiss was alive we had to wait 2! And it was right before Christmas too!! “Happy holidays Weiss, here’s a harpoon!” 💔
RIGHT?? The first time this dropped that plot twist hit me like a FRIEGHT TRAIN. But volume 6 is by FAR my favorite so I literally cannot wait to see the next video!

I could tell that Raven was going to leave that encounter with the spring maiden power somehow, but I never guessed she went INTO it with them.
While some people call this the worst season. This is the one that cemented Yang as my favorite character. I love her in the finale, her arc from the beginning to here is so good. Maturing from the thrill seeker to the responsible, calm, one who was broken and is still working to piece herself back together into a better person.
The scenes with RWBY reuniting are good but I love that they always show JN_R in the same shot or right after. Before Blake comes back you see the six of them and they all celebrate and have dinner, catching up and joking around. And then when Blake comes back you have the emotional RWBY hug with JN_R in the background just looking at each other and knowing that they will never be able to have that moment.
I always liked JNPR more and it still hurts.
Rewatching, I definitely don't think it's as bad as people made it out to be.
Yeah, the finale is weird (like why are all the fights one on one?) But the animators were still doing their best, and we see them get the hang of the new animation software with every volume, eventually even making team fights happen again.
The story and drama was honestly well done. A nice sort of breather for V6.
Love how this went from intended as 2 episodes to the entire finale cause that's how pulling RWBY is xD
Yes, Blake did zone in on Yang and that says plenty; we BB'ers fed well on that scene along nvm the bit of "All That Matters" that plays during the part where Yang accepts Blake back xD
Raven vs. Cinder is top tier imb, such a good fight and even if one has issues with v5 serves as a good reason to rewatch xD

Also you're about to enter into the crème de la crème of RWBY, 6-8 are top-tier and the best so far; even surpassing the goliath that is v3 as the top for me.

Like to paint a picture: v4 is considered generally as "okay" or "good"; 5 is "acceptable" or "weaker" since it has issues but is still enjoyable; 6 is "top tier" or "the best"; and so on to give some semblance of a gauge xD
I'll leave the intensity to when you get to that point to not risk spoiling anything xD I'll just say that you're in for a ride xD

Always a sacrifice. Every single small thing she said, was theatre to continue the lie that Vernal was the Spring Maiden. You can go back and see those scenes again in the bandit camp, just HOW MANY small things she does and says to reinforce it. So no, she doesn't care more about Vernal than for Yang. Yang she saved once. Vernal would live for exactly as long as she was useful.

She's talking about Vernal. Yang gestures at her when she says "Did you kill her too?" Then Raven turns to look down at Vernal's body. You guys are overthinking that line too much. Just look at their motions as it was said. Raven got set off after that because she actually cared about Vernal but would never openly admit to being attached to another person. I don't think she's a bitch as much as she's hurt and keeps distance from others so she doesn't have to feel loss again.

The post-credit scene was just Raven doing what she does best: running from her problems. Her portals are anchored to those she's close to: Yang, Qrow, Vernal, and Tai. Vernal is dead and she's running from Qrow and Yang. Fun fact: Raven distances herself from others and has a semblance that brings her closer to them. Qrow, on the other hand, loves his family but his semblance forces him to stay away.
I am absolutely hyped for you getting to volume 6. It is by FAR my favorite volume. You are in for a wild ride!

I had a friend over and I watched a reaction with him and he laughed a lot at your editing yourself into the background during the Blake and Sun conversation about team RWBY. Love the content and the attitude and vibe that comes with it. I need to admit watching reactions is how I cope with the pain inflicted by the show and having to patiently wait for the next season because I would prefer waiting longer than having it rushed.

So, for some clarity on the whole "notice how she said yang and not ruby or weiss".... A lot of people assumed this was an easter egg bumblebee moment (and maybe there was a little of that.) but the bigger picture of it was, if you remember:
at the end of Vol 3, the last time Blake saw Yang, her arm had just been severed and she was unconscious. Everyone was running for their lives, and the last thing she knew was that one of her teammates could have died. So to suddenly see Yang, in combat stance, in a fight, with what looks like her arm must have been a huge shock to her. Maybe even moreso than knowing Ruby and Weiss also made it.
on the 'Raven wants Qrow dead' thing - it's very clear that she was talking shit to manipulate Cinder. her semblance gives her constant access to Qrow and she could've killed him at any time (volume 4 would've been a prime opportunity), especially with the power disparity between them. she wouldn't need Cinder's help to kill him, but telling her she does makes Cinder less suspicious of Raven because Cinder operates on a very vindictive sense of logic
her semblance itself is the biggest giveaway that Raven isn't as tough and hardened as she likes to present herself as (with all the lies she's trying to convince herself of) - it literally functions as a connection to the people she loves, but she's so boxed in by her own paranoia that she can't use it for that purpose without admitting to that vulnerability

The Schnee Summoning Semblance is limited in that each Schnee can only summon creatures they've previously defeated. The Giga Knight was what Weiss defeated in the Volume 1: White Trailer.

@@RainLight1991 Yeah I've come to realize the animation makes it hard to tell since Volume 5 already has several animation errors in it so I don't know if the animation is just wrong and she's supposed to be looking at Vernal or if Yang actually meant Raven herself. The only reason I doubt the latter is because it just doesn't sound like something Yang would say since up to this point she's never used metaphors before.

Loving the reaction to the end of Chapter 12. A few people including myself figured it out when Cinder and the crew first showed up to Raven's camp and Raven made the dig at Cinder about her surname being Fall, saying she must have picked it herself.
But Vernal literally means Spring. Add the fact we never saw Vernal with the fire eyes and Raven having her mask on every time Vernal "used" her powers, and you've got yourself a decoy. Was VERY clever of Raven.

Volumes 6, 7, and 8 are some of the best in RWBY in my opinion. I cannot wait for you to begin that journey!

One of my favorite tiny details in the Raven vs Cinder fight that is hard to see unless you watch it at a slower speed is the way they visually convey the emotions of both combatants as the fight progresses. Cinder starts off very smug, thinking she's unbeatable, but as Raven keeps outplaying her it eventually turns into a look of panic that can be seen as Raven chases her among the falling rocks, all while Raven is smirking. It all happens so fast that it can be hard to spot, but little details like that are really awesome.
I can definitely see it now!
Cinder was without a doubt outclassed. That smugness….was met, and defeated
I think it’s important to understand that Cinder is in fact a superior fighter to Raven in terms of pure skill as a warrior.
As for why Cinder lost to Raven here, that was mainly due to Raven’s superior knowledge and experience with the Maiden powers, having about a decade longer than Cinder with which she used to master them, whereas Cinder only had a few months at most.
It is also important to acknowledge the disadvantages that Cinder faced during this and her other battles. Firstly, her Grimm arm (its official name being “Shadow Hand”), whilst enabling her to siphon Aura and/or magic like the Maiden powers into herself, also serves as a crippling weakness, and not just to the Silver Eyes. Because Cinder’s Shadow Hand is not protected by Aura, we see it getting impaled by a shard of her own sword in the beginning of this fight, not to mention the however many tonnes of rock that collapsed on her later Despite enduring the pain of what would be equivalent to grievous and debilitating injuries on most people, Cinder is still able to fight on, which speaks to her sheer strength and willpower, to the point where her Aura level was about the same as Raven’s by the end. Additionally, we mustn’t forget about the other scars and burnt flesh and tissue all over Cinder’s body; those ought to contribute to lessening her full potential in some regard. And furthermore, Cinder is missing an eye, which diminishes one’s ability to judge distance, and subsequently harms their overall fighting ability. Therefore, Cinder was able to fight her enemies even with poor vision and other physical defects.
So Cinder is technically a superior fighter to Raven in terms of skill, but was just overcome by her older opponent’s greater experience with the Maiden powers, as well as her own physical disabilities (namely the loss of her eye, heavy scarring, and an entire arm that can’t be protected by Aura). Had Cinder been in her peak physical form like she was when she defeated and killed Ozpin himself in Volume 3, Raven might not have fared so well against the Dark Maiden here.
See, if you think about it they kinda hinted Raven was the Spring Maiden this whole volume. The Maidens represent their respective relics, and they kinda reflect it in their actions/personalities/etc
Raven sought out Knowledge and had been interested in learning what she could.
Cinder, made Choices that has (and will) impact not only her life, but the lives around her.
Winter (Creation) & Summer (Destruction) Maidens will represent similarly.
Also, next volume….is a lot of LORE.

One VERY important thing to remember is that Raven has had the power of the Spring Maiden for years, meaning shes trained and honed its power.
Cinder just got hers.
Also I feel bad for Raven, Everyone likes to hate on her leaving Yang, Failing to meet the Responsibility and Commitment She had to her Family (Ruby, Yang, and Tai),
But they like to Ignore the fact that she Already had a much older Responsibility and Commitment to her Family (Her Tribe, The whole reason She and Qrow went to beacon was to be Stronger for their Tribes sake, and Qrow abandoned THAT commitment). Of course, Raven could have taken Yang with her But that would mean taking her away From her arguably Cushy life with Tai and Ruby, and Into the Harsher, more Brutal life of a Bandit. Even then we are assuming Qrow wouldn't try to take Yang back to Keep Her from that life.
Eh I find it hard to be a Raven sympathist. Regardless of older commitments, she's still setting her brother, daughter, and Ruby up to be killed. Even ignoring that the tribe is a bunch of murderers, since it's the life she grew up with, she doesn't have to express her loyalty to one family by killing the other. Especially considering that Qrow and the gang weren't even supposed to be involved in the first place. She's the one that crossed that line.
This is a really good take!
By taking on Oz's missions, marrying Tai and having Yang, Raven herself abandoned the tribe just like Qrow, but eventually her loss of faith in being able to defeat Salem let her cowardice take over and she returned to her tribe. It was *not* some twisted loyalty virtue like you make it seem, the tribe is just a convenient excuse to cover up her cowardice just like her "strong to survive" sophistry. This is shown by the fact that she doesn't return to the tribe; she runs away to Patch.
Rewatching this i still can't understand how some think v5 was the worst because the Raven Spring Maiden Twist?? THE MAIDEN VS MAIDEN FIGHT?? iconic tbh

That's Volume 5! I've been looking forward to your reaction to the Raven reveal, and now, when you go back to every time Vernal's "exhibiting" the Maiden powers (each Maiden has those eye flames when the powers are used) in reality, it was Raven the entire time, hiding the eye flames thanks to her mask. I really enjoyed this Volume a lot, it may have been slower, but I think it was necessary in this way, as in a few others. It really gave certain characters a lot of time to show some vulnerability, to lay their feelings bare, show where their heads are at the moment. Not to mention, explain some things fans were curious about, including the tidbit that Ozpin's cane is not one of the Relics, which fans had been speculating about, as well as what qualifies as a Relic, while bringing some new questions to ponder.
I love the Lord of the show so much! I love when shows really slow down the pace and give you more character inside with a lot of people. That’s what really grabs the attention for me. Don’t just give me exactly what I want all the time,
let me learn about the story, the plot, the reasoning, everything
The show is top tier for that

Some people were convinced that Cinder died there, lol. I didn’t believe it for a second because of one simple rule: no body, no death.
That, and also the fact that Cinder is the main villain of the entire series. She's not dying permanently until at least the end of the series.

Did you notice? Cinder recreated and used a javelin similar in design to Pyrrha’s weapon, Miló, to injure Weiss. I think Cinder creates and uses weapons (and other aspects) of people who have left an impact on her.

I love Raven fr my favorite character, she's too prideful, and too cowardly, she's so scared that she almost always has her hand on her weapon, she's the most human character in the show imo, she looks evil on the surface but when you think about it, she was scarred in some way and now she won't trust anyone. When she interacts with others she usually says hurtful things because of her pride, and then tries to actually be nice, but her first impressions are just so terrible. She's so relatable because I have had similar problems just not to that extent.
I know hindsight is 50-50, but I love Raven’s minute expressions that demonstrate just how conflicted he is. Reactions just make me love this show more and more. Also, when Yang said “Did you kill her, too?”, she was talking about Vernal, and judging by Raven’s reaction Raven probably does feel guilt for putting Vernal in harms way.
I swear right?! It’s those minute details that make the show so good!

Darth Vader's real name was Anakin Skywalker, but he always talk about Anakin like a diferent person, someone that he kill in the past, Obi-Wan also talk about both like they were different persons, that's what is implying Yang here, that Raven changed so much, that she is not the Raven that was part of the inner circle of Ozpin to protect the world, member of Team STRQ, Taiyang's wife or even her mother, not anymore.

When it’s simply all about Raven right now. The sentences are all structured around Raven and who she once was. Tai told us earlier in the season that Raven was once a different person than today. It’s referring to that whole conversation. Think of it like that scene in Star Wars. Obi-wan said Anakin killed Luke’s father. He’s right. Because Anakin killed that part of him and became Darth Vader.
This is essentially that same thing.

Ah, raven, an honestly really good character and foil to qrow, but she didn't really get much of her character shown so the tears don't impact the audience as much as it should. Her semblance is so symbolic too with it having the most worth when used in conjunction with a friend or team, yet she's a coward in denial and refuses to bond with anyone as she fears it would make her weaker, but really the opposite is true. I would say a little more of qrow, but I think you need just a tad bit more context.
It only just occurred to me that Jaune really tried to stab Cinder THROUGH THE FACE!!!!

One of my favorite things about Jessica's acting is when she first started out in Volume 1, most people seemed to have a problem with her choice (specifically, the lack of actual voice acting skills) as they felt the deep, sultry yet mysterious voiced she did for Cinder was too forced. She was originally a cosplayer, but she's come such a long way as a voice actress! Clearly she's taken classes and gotten RESULTS. Which is actually more than I can say for the main characters.... but they've gotten better too. it's just not as notable. -
I actually knew of her from YEARS ago and to realize that she was the voice actor for Cinder was even more amazing because she’s very well at it!
