This is a misconception. Men in western times thru the 20s (rural areas), would tip their hats to other men as a sign of respect. This was a derived offshoot from medieval times when knights raised the face guards to other knights to show their intentions to be friendly as opposed to hostile. That is the origin of our military's salute. Men of old west era would do a half bow from the waist when showing deference to a woman as a display of being genteel in the presence of the fairer sex. The woman would curtsey in response. By the 30s, society became more fast paced (rat race), and men abbreviated the bow to a head nod or a touch to the hat brim. This lasted until the 60s when men started abandoning brim hats and suits as everyday wear. History also has shown a tendancy to categorize certain words as feminine or masculine that used to be unisex. It's perfectly fine to call a man beautiful and a woman handsome. Men used to wear purses to hold the oversized paper money of the 1800s. With the invention of the wallet and smaller bills, those became obsolete, but women still use them daily. Hats are still worn by men today but 90% are caps. Women rarely wear hats and large ornate hats have almost completely disappeared much like corsets, wire bustles, oversized bows, frills, parasols, etc. Convienience is king and caps for men are just another piece of apparel that almost never get removed outside of a courtroom or church...although military personnel still remove their cover in any indoor structure.
And people wear less hats in general. The population is majority moderate to high-density urban with indoors activity and automobiles with controlled environments; a lot of the historical incentivizes to wear hats are far less pressing for much of the population today, and with that, a lifestyle where a hat is unnecessary is an indicator of socio-economic status. Obviously, some still wear hats sometimes-they are generally far less culturally significant and can carry undesirable connotations today, though.
A funeral hearse and two cars full of family drove down our busy high St last year. Nobody acknowledged it. As it passed me, I stopped and took off my hat, watching it pass. Then I noticed a man about my age (60) on the other side of the road, doing the same. We nodded to each other and putting our caps on carried on our ways. Society is circling the drain. It costs nothing. Years ago, in a family car following my father's coffin, I remember seeing a man doing it as we passed. It meant so much to me. It is something i have practiced ever since.
My mom has a very touching memory of a gentleman taking off his hat and bowing his head as they drove by in her grandfather's funeral procession. This was the 40s, when she was little.
My mom taught us to do this and I taught my children to do it. It’s funny running into your comment because I honestly thought no one did this anymore. I am happy to hear you do this.
Exactly. I remember watching adults doing this as a car passed, a silent sign of respect. All of us kids stopped playing and waited until the cars passed. We also joined the honking when a car with "just married" made it way honking down the streets of our town. We celebrated each other's joys and were kind in sad moments. I miss those days.
Birth of a baby you brought food. Illness- food Death- food You welcomed new neighbour's with food. You shoveled the snow of the elderly and cut their grass in warm weather. We used to care about each other.
Isn't it funny how women in the comment section say they love all this stuff, but a handful of terrible women have ruined it all? I regularly hold doors for strangers. On MANY occasions i have been yelled at by women who "dont need a MAN to hold a door for them".
I’m a woman and don’t know why other women do this. Thank you on their behalf. There are kind women out there. If men and women could learn to understand and appreciate each other for our differences, the World would be a better place. At the end of the day, no matter which gender you are, everyone wants to be happy, treated with respect and loved.
As a young lady in my 20s in the 90s this very old But charming old man took hi cap off to me allowing me to pass him I was so in awe of such morals and respect!!
Morals, really? It's amoral to not tip your hat? I prefer when we actually started to question all of the brainwashing we were expected to swallow without good reason. These types of gestures were never even worldwide trends, but we should ascribe some morality to them, for what purpose? So we can brandish torches after those not aware of hat tipping 'morality' and who would be immoral then? Just someone looking for no good reason to think they can judge someone else is all I'm getting, morality has nothing whatsoever to do with it. I despise that sheep judge those who think for themselves, rather than follow without question, because they aren't the ones responsible for building or advancing civilization.
I totally get where you're coming from but don't be fooled! There is not really anything inherently"moral" in such a (charming but ultimately meaningless) quaint gesture. 😉 Just don't want to see any guy use that to "play" you 😊✌🏽
Yes! I had an experience like this, an older man tipped his hat to me and held the door open for me and my two daughters. It’s hard to convey the way it makes you feel when you experience unconditional respect and care from a stranger. It’s something you remember for life. It’s the way they were raised, and unfortunately it’s not seen very often in this generation.
I was at the gas station here in New England putting my seatbelt on, and randomly saw a handsome man getting into his car. We made eye contact and i smiled at him and he tipped his hat down with a gentle smile. Men can still nod gently as a sign of respect to women.
Oh to find a gentleman who opens the door for his lady, pulls out her chair at the dinning table, stands when she enters the room, escorts her by his left arm so his strong right arm protects her from any danger coming at them , thank you God for a great man (grandfather) who did all these acts of love to my grandma to their dying days. R.I.P Nana & Papa.❤
Jeff Beck tipped his hat to me once in our village, damn I melted and remember it every damn day since. Men, it’s such a beautiful, gracious, gentlemanly respectful and courteous gesture that literally makes our hearts swell with love, and it costs nothing. Tip your hats, 🎩
I turned down three dates(not my type). He asked again, I agreed to go for a drink. Walking me home, he stood on the outside of me and took his jacket off and draped it over my shoulders when I said I was cold. He asked for a kiss on my doorstep, I said yes. Ten months on we were engaged. Two years on married. Just celebrated 36 years married!
But where exactly comes the hat-tipping into play? 😁 (Edit: yes, I got it that the comment above was about romance and good manners. Yet the title of the video says "[...] when men stopped _tipping their hats_ " That's what I made fun of.)

To the men please continue being you from many women who continue to love these acts of respect. I still remember each time a male stranger has said excuse me, given up his seat on public transportation for me, politely opened doors etc. These acts do not go unnoticed. And if you feel the women around you criticize you then change the company you keep or move to a more encouraging location. Compassion and chivalry is not dead ❤
How women carried themselves in society, many decades back, is the kind of respect they got, it's as though that almost came natural for men to tilt their hats, so different in this era, the way i saw my mum treat dad was really special, they had so much respect n love between themselves, what a time that was, they still do, even in their older age. Words just fail when I try to describe how perfect Alexandra is! Playful, intense, thoughtful, romantic, beautiful, natural, they just keep coming! Quite literally, from the first scene with her in the bar in Cairo when she first met Spencer, when I had no idea who she was or if she was even going to be an ongoing character, I was simply stunned and memorized!! The show had just started and I was at my brother's house, as he had Paramount, and I remember trying to him and said "OMG! I don't know who that girl was, but would you rewind that, because she was awesome!" I didn't know if she and her friends were all passing characters, but she just glowed, she radiates an energy and just STOLE the scene and from than in I just couldn't stop watching the show. She is, quite simply, as perfect as any woman created by God has any right to be. As a man who knew the love of a good woman in marriage, I very much am living vicariously through Spencer and want him to move Heaven and Earth, and to crush anyone that stands between him and this woman. Because if God had brought her into my life, that's what I'd do. That's what a love story is, that's why it's so amazing!

We met more than a few cowboys who acted with "old school" manners, and we loved every second of it. I doubt we're the only "city girls" who enjoy chivalry.
As a young associate in an accounting firm, I traveled a lot to our Atlanta and New York offices. In Atlanta, the men would part like the Red Sea to let women off the elevator first. I tried that in NYC, and an old lady yelled at me for not exiting right away. I guess it’s not just a matter of era but also place.

Romance died with feminism. Chivalry only makes sense if you assume women are a different kind, that is inferior in many aspects and you have to treat her different than thee way you treat another man because of that. The point where women decide to pretend they were equal to men. Men felt like chivalry useless.

Women have the right to wear ANYTHING (not intrinsically FEMALE, Romans wore SKIRTS into battle and how can any leg garment be specific to one sex; both have waist and legs) and women are protected from genital mutilation!!! women gave up elegance and charm when they switched so enormously to pants) yet they retain a stranglehold monopoly on skirts, the original garment of civilization). Who was wearing a skirt was ONLY about who was not riding a HORSE!!
@@kooshanjazayeri I will state what you will have a hard time understanding. How many styles of clothing are women banned from wearing (none) and how many styles are men banned from wearing? Draped garments, but in ancient times everyone wore them; pants were "barbarian" and in AD 393 men in pants were exiled from Rome, their property seized. Pants were invented by Parthians and Mongols for riding horses; not because masculinity depends on pants. Why should women have a skirt monopoly since they rarely wear them anymore? ONLY because of World War Two factory work do women get to wear pants today 18 million USA women wore them for the FIRST time ever, not due to Hepburn and Dietrich in 1930s movies, Skirts and trousers are style differences only, not sex differences. If you told a Roman soldier wearing HIS skirt he was a transvestite, your head would be on a pole.

Actually, this trdition started with knights in a jaust, lifting their visors to show their face to their opponent as a respect thing. Chivalry comes from chevalier, French for knight. It was a code of behavior designed to tame the absolute invinsible monsters that knights were. And yes, it included code of conduct with ladies, but not women... there is a difference. So Chivalry was not really romantic.
My favorite detail about chivalry is if a knight found a lady alone in the forest he was obligated to protect her. But if she was already protected by another knight and he managed to kill that knight, then he was free to do whatever he wanted with her. That claim might not be true but I've run across it more than once.

That it was considered a more civilized, cultured, refined behavior by the people of that time and place while I consider it such a bonkers way of life. We live in a mostly peaceful society (compared to what things used to be like) which is the result of hundreds of years of patriarchy working to build a better world. So it's easy for us to forget how violent the world used to be, before benevolent patriarchy made it so much safer for us all.
Thanks for the history check!
Finally, someone who knows of what he's talking about 👍

A funeral hearse and two cars full of family drove down our busy high St last year. Nobody acknowledged it.
As it passed me, I stopped and took off my hat, watching it pass. Then I noticed a man about my age (60) on the other side of the road, doing the same. We nodded to each other and putting our caps on carried on our ways. Society is circling the drain. It costs nothing. Years ago, in a family car following my father's coffin, I remember seeing a man doing it as we passed. It meant so much to me. It is something i have practiced ever since.
Beautiful!!❤
Illness- food
Death- food
You welcomed new neighbour's with food.

Just don't want to see any guy use that to "play" you 😊✌🏽
Sally, I completely agree with you❤
@@brisay1844 Can you define morality for me? I rather doubt it.

I still tip my hat, but only when I'm on patrol and I'm trying to be kind while I'm in uniform without inviting an air of casualness.
Thank you and God bless 🙏😊

Romance died with feminism. Chivalry only makes sense if you assume women are a different kind, that is inferior in many aspects and you have to treat her different than thee way you treat another man because of that. The point where women decide to pretend they were equal to men. Men felt like chivalry useless.

Tipping the hat to a woman says a lot of respect without a single word being uttered
Tipping of the hat represents courtesy and respect and acknowledging one's worth and acceptance and kindness. PS: Respect deserves Respect whether it happens to be another human being, an animal, a place and or a thing..
Respect is earned not given.

Romance died when women started believing they are the centre of the world....😒😔
Corretion: romance died when women already had equal right, then fought for equal rights again, and took rights away from men
Women have the right to wear ANYTHING (not intrinsically FEMALE, Romans wore SKIRTS into battle and how can any leg garment be specific to one sex; both have waist and legs) and women are protected from genital mutilation!!! women gave up elegance and charm when they switched so enormously to pants) yet they retain a stranglehold monopoly on skirts, the original garment of civilization). Who was wearing a skirt was ONLY about who was not riding a HORSE!!
AHAHAHAHAHAHHAHA oh boy you americans are on another level of stupid
women took rights away from men?
@@charlessavoie2367 yes, indeed i have a very hard time understanding what you mean... first of all, even if women took the right of dressing whatever from men (which they didn't) are you sad because of what you call "skirt monopoly"? and you think women took that right away? that's a normal society attitude, to make everybody dress similarly and according to their current culture, it has nothing to do with women, basically men stopped wearing these and ridiculed everyone who did (as they do for any kind of particularity, forcing everyone to conformity, and everyone does it, even most probably you, but for the cases that you think are "obviously wrong") but no single group, be it men or women can not do something this severe to others, except when there's a majority, and the majority has and will force it's will and taste on everybody, especially when there's no fierce resistance, what you are complaining has nothing to do with women alone, as i said it's a cultural thing that whole societies adhere to
I always do head nod still constantly when I'm out, since you can't tip a beanie. It's just a real quick disarming move at the store or office or wherever.

@@andrewd7112😑😶🤨
@@andrewd7112 …… Why is that your favorite 🧐
@@Charlene_____ Because of the stark raving insanity of it!
That it was considered a more civilized, cultured, refined behavior by the people of that time and place while I consider it such a bonkers way of life. Armed dudes running amok in the forest, and that was considered an *improvement* over what things were like before chivalry.
We live in a mostly peaceful society (compared to what things used to be like) which is the result of hundreds of years of patriarchy working to build a better world. So it's easy for us to forget how violent the world used to be, before benevolent patriarchy made it so much safer for us all.
Chivalric code was a huge step forward yet it's so deranged by our perspective. It beggars the mind!
