We have finally upgraded to Blue we added a Victron smart solar charger and a Victron DC-DC Orion Tr smart charger in our selfbuild vw crafter campervan, our new Lithium Roamer 230SB (SEAT BASE ) 250a battery has finally arrived it time to get stuck in and fit this long awaited upgrade see how we get on It's a game changer!

Nice compact setup. I'm in the process of replacing my FLA batteries (4x230ah) with two 300ah lithiums. The weigh savings will be significant, like you mentioned. I've got 510 watts of solar on the roof and will be adding a 20amp b2b charger so those should keep the batteries charged up. Like you, I have 2 fridges, but smaller. Both can be set from -16c to 10c so I use one as a freezer and one as a fridge. With the new battery monitor it will be interesting to watch the usage.
Sound like you have a good setup. I would look at investing in a bigger B2B for the winter months you will be glad you did as your solar input will be very low or none existent, mate

@@TheCraftyBlindersvanlife Thanks, I'll see if that is needed. The B2B charger is a new addition. I've had just the solar recharging the batteries for the last 5+ years and generally it's been okay. I also hope to avoid winter😊 in the near future so we'll see how this new setup works.

Great vlog👍 Yep your fridges will work better when they have items in them rather than an empty fridge. Only fill the fridge to about 80% of its capacity, same goes for a freezer.👍 Looks like you will have to add another 30Amp BtoB charger to up the charge to on average 55Amps. That will sort you out and should charge the battery up to approx 90% in 1 hour of driving👍
It's our intention to install another B2B like you say is a must for the winter months with very little solar 😁👍
Glad to see you going blue ;) Victron inverter/charger next, you won't regret it. I'm averaging between 7-8kwh daily usage if I'm not conserving energy but that's down to my pc. If I turn it off my solar keeps me at 100% SOC. I find my Orion doesn't always charge the way you expect so worth keeping an eye on it through Victron Connect and it's worth adding a fan to aid cooling of the Orion and keep it charging at maximum rate. Also, if you go to the VRM Portal you can see a lot of data, it has a lovely easy to read chart of grid/solar/SOC etc, compared to the Roamer app. Smartshunt is also a great way of monitoring power usage.

thank you the battery has been in a while now and has been spot on a little underpowered on the dark winter days due to the lack of solar but soon sorted with a little drive around
fantastic setup. Have a look at Blue Sea Systems for high quality switches and other electrical bits. High end boat gear worth paying the extra for 👍

Another tweak/mod if using a normal 220v fridge is to wire the thermostat up so that it activates the inverter. This would mean the inverter would not be on all the time and cause a drain on the battery, and would only come on when the fridge thermostat would activate the inverter.

we are currently looking for a compressor fridge
our 3 way consumes to much power on 12v and put too much heat out when on gas great.in winter, not so good in the summer months

Hi mate that carbonoxide monitor you have is miles 2 high i was told on the Hymer Group carbonoxide is lower that air so if your asleep you would be dead and not wake up the one i had in my Hymer was high i soon altered it so its just above ground level great video mate im looking at buying the same Lithium battery
Hi, you have raised a hood point there and something that shouldn't be over looked when selecting the correct location 😁👍
Ours is a 2 in one device, fire & and carbon monoxide and fitted as per the manufacturers instructions. we have another monoxide detector in the garage

3 way fridges are woefull on 12v, much better on gas 👍
TBH the 12v is really only for when driving, they are designed to run on gas or 240 hook-up when on site 🤔
my compressor fridge uses about 11W per hour, that's a huge difference to ni on 60w your 3way is using on 12v

2 months ago I bought a rechargeable light from Lidl, i haven't seen it for 7 weeks 🙄 all i managed to do was charge it snd test it once, then i tidyed the Amby up for the MOT and light go hidey 😭

Fridge will behave better once it cycles less. Good install pal. Any chance you could show your inverter setup if you have one and what advice would you give for 240 off grid, ie separate ccts or sockets or change over switch shore/inverter. Appreciate the help pal

We have like you gone with roamer and victron. Everything is working well for us now just thinking of adding a second b2b for additional charge to cover no solar in the winter months.

@@TheCraftyBlindersvanlife 300 amp and we use a few electric items to cook such as induction hob microwave and kettle. Works really well in the summer with 400 watt solar but on dull and cloudy days is only giving us 3 days max. Which is still good but with only 30 amp b2b not putting much back in looking at maybe adding a new sterling 40amp unit

I don't know if you have upgraded the Orion dc to dc but I think you would need at least 60 amps to charge the roamer battery in a faster time.
We do intend to add another B2B I just wanted to see how one worked out first during summer we managed our power with no issues how ever during these winter months we have had to keep an eye on things
Nice one Sam 👍I'm just back home to the north west of Ireland after a 9 day trip to England and Wales. My batteries are just bog standard lead acid leisure batteries (2 × 130ah). However, I do have a 320w mono crystalline panel feeding through a Victron mppt charge controller and a Sterling 30amp dc - dc charger which I'll be swapping out for a Victron Orion unit quite soon. I did avail of ehu on a campsite in Wallingford so the mains charger (another blue box!) could do its stuff. Will I go Lithium? I expect so but not before my current batteries have given up the ghost. Love your stuff mate, keep on keeping on 👍

@@TheCraftyBlindersvanlife many years ago, on foot and with a very small tent. In my opinion, a ferry crossing from Cairnryan to Larne and then follow the "Wild Atlantic Way" from the very top of Ireland, eventually travelling down to Cork, would be a really splendid trip..
Love your videos brother, thank you for taking the time to vlog your upgrades... What is the small dial on the mppt you turned up to 7 used for? I've got 2 Victron mppt chargers the same size as yours but I haven't got those dials?
Hi so glad your enjoying the vlog it means alot the dial is the battery pre sets number 7 is for lithium it comes preset at number 2 which is Victron gel or agm batteries
It has 8 preloaded charge algorithms for ever type of battery on the market 😁👍
Nice video. Got myself a roamer battery a while back about to take on all the wiring. I like how your whole system is under the front seats. Are they stock seat bases? You work in the maritime industry by any chance?

Hi mate I have jist bought a roamer 230ah battery like yours what invertor do u have.. all I want the invertor.for it to run my coffee machine
Well, here's the thing
I too bought mine to run our coffee machine, and it did on the bench
but it's never worked since installing it in the van, and I think it's out invertor that's the issue so I wouldn't want to recommend it as I think it's too small it's only 1500w/ 3000w peak
Good work on the video thanks, I'm looking at buying the 300amp roamer battery and Victron orion dc2dc with a 540w solar setup with Victron 100/50 MPPT controller. I'm concerned about charging the 300ah battery back up on a bad solar day. Interested to know roughly how long it takes the dc2 dc to charge your 230 ah roamer when out driving on a poor weather day? thanks
I'm jot going to run as low as I did in the video again as it took quite some time to recharge the battery to full using the DC- DC it took a good 4 x 45 - 60 minute drives to get it back up to near full but it was topped of by the solar
The system is managing its self at this moment in time but winter will be a different issue I'm sure I nay need a second DC-DC charger
I'm just monitoring tge situation to see how we get on with the current arrangement 😁👍
@The Crafty Blinders van life glad to hear its coping well at the moment. yes ideally i would like to have it always within 50-100% state, my concern is not been able to fully charge the 300 ah battery to 100% so effectively partial recharging at a lower charge and damaging it. A second dc2 dc would work, I'm just wondering if i would be better off with a 60 amp sterling B2B. although from what I understand they don't always charge at full b2b current rating and it depending on battery discharged state.

Hi, on your smart charge controller why did you change the VE Bus setting underneath to 7? Asking as I’m hoping to install mine at the weekend

The dial allows you to select the correct battery type
Selecting number 7 adjusts the charge algorithm for lithium batteries
All explained on page 7 in the vitron manual

No issues in fact we basically don't even monitor it these days it works an absolute treat
