12V Air Conditioning - 'Holy Grail' Treeligo Mini Split Van Install

  • 12 volt Air Conditioning for a van or motorhome is hard to find, especially on a budget. We install the Treeligo 12v Mini Split air con unit on our van back doors and test it out to see whether it lives up to the hype.
    Our setup relies on a 680ah AGM battery bank, half of which is usable for this if needed. Aside from this we have 960W of solar, so wanted to see if this AC install could truly be off grid. Naturally we will put it to a longer term test too as we travel about in our campervan.
    We bought the 12v AC direct from Treeligo, starting with an email. This wasn't super smooth and we kept it safe by going through PayPal. Not recommending you do this, but it worked for us.
    Here it is on eBay: ebay.us/YRo1pK
    In our install we also added an extra battery protect, supplied by BSPK Solar in the UK. Thanks for the advice too - great company. The Treeligo mini split does offer some level of cut off at 11.9 volts, but we didn't want to go that low as we are not using Lithium, and like an element of control.
    In our install we also used the following things:
    Air conditioning vacuum pump and gauges: amzn.to/3y54cZD
    Black air con hose wrap (it comes with white but looked yellow): amzn.to/3SstO9z
    Additional clips (Treeligo were tight and only include one): amzn.to/3SpLOBB
    Just to note this is not a how to video, we did our own research and followed the instructions. But please do so too, stay safe and we hope you enjoyed the video.
    If you have questions on our van air con please put them in the comments, we will answer them if we can and if there is demand can do a long term test video too. We really need to see this thing in action before we can fully endorse it.
    Thanks for watching. Take care.

    Hey all. Thanks for watching, we will be giving the unit a good test over the next few weeks. So any questions please ask away.
    Quick heads up - about 6 mins odd in I did not add an overlay of the victron install. But it still makes sense - just a bit of a jump cut.
    Thanks so much for watching. Appreciate it. Safe travels and stay cool

    Stick a thermometer in the vent coming out of the a/c for the most accurate indication of how well it’s doing. Also, all of the furniture and other items inside the van are radiating heat so they have to be cooled down, too, before you’ll really feel the effect of the a/c. Just a little fyi from a girl from deep Tex-Ass 😂😅😊

    • @WanderbusAdventures
      @WanderbusAdventures  2 місяці тому +1

      That’s a great tip. Will give that a go. And that totally makes sense re. The stored and radiant heat. I think the key for our bus will be to keep the blinds up if we are somewhere very hot and stationary to try and combat this. With the widows it does store the heat a lot. Great advice. Thanks.

    Great video, thanks for your time and effort.
    How noisy is the outdoor compressor/fan? In other words could you run it on a campsite without annoying your neighbours.
    I guess you could cut down the hose lengths if you found the correct fittings and a crimp tool. Which may help with efficiency?

    • @WanderbusAdventures
      @WanderbusAdventures  2 місяці тому +1

      No problem at all. Great question, the outdoor fan is definitely louder than the indoor unit. You probably wouldn’t want to run it all night next to someone in a tent, but it’s not hugely noisy. Will see how it is with a basic DB Meter on my phone when I’ve a chance.
      Absolutely. If you knew someone that could make up hoses, or crimp on new ends that could work and you’d need less refrigerant.

      @WanderbusAdventures thanks for the reply. We managed to park up next to someone a few weeks ago (Karen🤣) who moaned about us running a small 12V fan overnight. It was 40C😏🤣

    Nice that's actually fairly well priced, how much was shipping?
    2nd best thing about AC after the fact it cools is that it also reduces humidity which makes sweating a lot effective which makes you feel even cooler.

    • @WanderbusAdventures
      @WanderbusAdventures  2 місяці тому +1

      Amazingly that included shipping. Shipping was quite a lot of it. I think as I went direct it cut out a lot of the fees. Bear in mind I did buy it almost a calendar year before fitting it.
      That’s a great point re. The humidity. You can see it on the Ruuvi tags I have drop a lot quicker than the temp. Which is no bad thing like you say.

    Nice job! I've got the same unit, just installed it in the cab of my expedition vehicle. How many and what size refrigerant cans did you use? Thanks! I don't know about the UK, but here in the USA you can rent the vaccum pump and manifold set for free at most auto parts stores.

    • @WanderbusAdventures
      @WanderbusAdventures  Місяць тому +1

      Thanks. I used replacement gas for R134a, I believe in US you’ll be able to buy cans of actual R134a. I used two cans and the pressure looked good on the low side and within the range on the high side - but could have been higher. Best advice I can give is go by the pressure and not the number of cans. That’s interesting you can hire them for free, amazing actually. What a saving.

      @@WanderbusAdventures So I did the refridgerant service and the cooling works great. Just wondering if you have a vibration noise, especially when the compressor kicks on. I notice that the compressor is mounted on rubber isolators but they seem really stiff and don't seem to do any dampening. Just wondering if you have experienced this. Cheers!

    • @WanderbusAdventures
      @WanderbusAdventures  Місяць тому +1

      @conjin1 brilliant stuff. Well done on that. We’ve noticed it on the inner unit and think we will add rubber spacers behind it to dampen it a bit. On the outside when on full blast it is noisier for sure, but we can not hear that inside so much. Have you added sound deadening to the panel? Our doors have that and that’ll take the resonance out of the panel.

    • @conjin1
      @conjin1 Місяць тому +1

      @@WanderbusAdventures there is sound deadening installed on the wall. I am also thinking of adding isolates inside and replacing the ones on the compressor with softer ones.

      So far so good. There are potential things I’d do differently next time. I might have run the cables in their own grommet perhaps. Will
      Share as we learn more in the travel vids.
      Re the hose. Yes I reckon that’s possible and I might attempt it. Same for the venting warm air to the unit. We shall test and learn 😊

    What is your power bank and how much power it use for 10 hours
    Is it2 batteries of 200A each
    good or i need more to run for 10 hours
    Thank you

    • @WanderbusAdventures
      @WanderbusAdventures  28 днів тому

      Hi, we have 680ah of battery. Ours are AGM Supercycle, and as such we have around 400ah of usable power. In very hot climate on full blast we think that would last 4-6 hours. However if you put in on a lower setting this would last longer, and if you have solar like we do longer still (obviously its best to avoid the sun but on days when we can't we can run this without depleting the battery). It's best to use an online calculator to work out what you might need.

    • @WanderbusAdventures
      @WanderbusAdventures  18 днів тому

      Hi. So you’re right that the capacity is around 100ml. I’ve checked with Treeligo and they’ve confirmed this is already included; my advice is to check when installing. No leaks on mine, but you never know.

    cool. 🥸 It will be interesting to see how effective it is at cooling the whole van down on a hot day (you do rarely get them there, but with climate change you might get a few more) Your install is very pro, just like the rest of the van. 👍
