Luffy is the simple solution to complex problems. Sanji being trapped on Baratie due to a debt is solved by Luffy saying to “just leave”, his solution to Nami’s financially slavery by Arlong is just “ok I’ll beat him up”. His neutrality to everything around him and make the simpliest solutions come true is always wonderful
Facts and once he watches luffys backstory and once luffys actions start having severe consequences. He will fall in love. Certainly. The stakes go from a 3 to a 10 by the end.
@@jimjason5146I have a hard time believing he’ll love Luffy even after Marineford. If it takes that much for you to enjoy a character, especially a mostly stagnant character like Luffy, his opinion won’t change much.
@lesten2707 seeing him repeatedly getting his A** beat for his friends and just what lengths he will go to for his friends adds a lot and makes you respect him more. The way he tries to help his enemies as well is admirable. And once Conquerors haki is introduced, it really explains why he can't back down. For example repeatedly trying to punch the inside of the snake 🤣. He is hard-headed, and through effort alone, he triumphs. And later in the story he gets more serious because they are in actual danger being at war with the yonkos and the marine's OP captains.
You claimed something interesting in this video about Usopp being Sniper King. That just can’t be correct because as Sniper King himself states he is good friends with Usopp, making him a different person entirely. I don’t know if we’ll ever know the identity of the sniper king himself but my best guess is Black Beard
I feel like so many of Charlie's criticisms can be resolved by simply reading the manga (pacing issues, maintaining interest without dragging on, and shorter flashbacks iirc)
That "300 episodes before it actually starts getting good" is the era of one piece millions of one piece fans wish for to happen again, more interaction with crew, more chill island travel, time on the ship, you cant statisfy everyone i guess, its why some of the show is slice of life other dark and serious and other is fights and action, it has something for everyone, a show kids can watch and adults can enjoy
Yeah,i miss the interaction with the crew and more chill island travel but i guess that will never happen again bcz of how One Piece is in the Final Saga which is Oda gotta be more focused on finding the One Piece and explaining every mystery that ever happen in One Piece
Yeah kinda same? It took a bit for me to get into it too and One Piece got better & more interesting story wise later on but I do miss the chill & laid back parts of earlier one piece. Where I felt the funny crew interactions were actually more funny rather than the same overused jokes later on. I also feel like the later arcs now are quite a bit longer and there's always high stakes & high tension without letting go. Like both eras got their positives & negatives. It did take me a bit to get into One Piece and while I think it's better &more intersting now, I do miss some of the earlier parts as well.
Still unfortunate to hear he hated the first 300 episodes so much 😭 definitely starts peaking around water seven but i got hooked at like baratie or arlong park
lol i got hooked when zoro joined and arlong park but it prob helped that i was younger and a lot of the comedy hit a lot more and second time rewatching it i got to enjoy all the details and foreshadowing
youre still just startin dude, and im glad. Cant wait for the many times your mind gets sooo hardly blown by different realisations about the story, oda and so on. MUch fun man!!
I always feel so sorry for him when he talks about how slow the pacing is. Poor guy doesn't know he's still in the "fast-paced" era that actually adapts more than 10 pages per episode
@@harnessedcomic4381ong as soon as i finished Dressrosa i vowed to skip right to the Doffy fight upon rewatch cause Dressrosa is paced so fucking bad. did you know that Rebecca's flashback is shown FIFTY-TWO TIMES throughout Dressrosa's entire course? holy shit.
I love how Charlie was just like us when we started one piece. “Nobody dies I hate it!” Then Oda started to cook now we don’t want anybody important to die anymore😭
they still need to kill of main characters we still haven't got a single good death it would be much sadder if it was someone we knew for a while then just one arc
the part that really got me wasnt that but when aokiji shows up at the end and stands from outside the party just to tell robin that saul was his friend and to make up for what he was forced to do that day he decided to give her another chance at life and tells her hes glad she finally found friends.
The thing about Luffy before time skip is that Luffy is very casual, outgoing and carefree. But after some events he gets serious and realises that his actions have consequences.
Aka saboudy and marineford and imo that’s where most of his development comes from realizing the scope of which the enemies he’s facing in route to becoming pirate king . And what makes that marineford/saboudy moments so impactful for luffy character is everything we’ve seen up until this point in how luffy always believes he can protect anyone and then seeing he couldn’t even save his brother . I hope he realizes all this whenever he gets there eventually. He has no idea at all about how deep Luffys character eventually gets
Luffy has a very subtle character arc, on the surface, he is exactly how you described him, however, as the show progresses and you start to pay more attention to the fine details, it becomes apparent that there is more depth to him than meets the eye. The first sign of inner wisdom was on jaya when luffy and zoro spoke with Blackbeard, as Blackbeard becomes more important, that interaction will also change your outlook on luffy. Luffy vs ussop also sets the tone for how luffy will grow as a character, that was one of his first true tests of his resolve as a captain and we’ll see more of that side of him in the future.
Nope. He is one of the main shounen protagonists that doesn't change. And theres nothing wrong with that. I hate critics who say that a good character is the one who goes through changes. *Character development.* Thats the problem allegedly. What about *character influence?* Naruto, Goku. Talk no jutsu? Luffy doesn't change. They change the people around them. Luffy changed Zoro, Nami , Sanji, Usopp, just to name a few. He got them to join his crew and die for him. That's a solid character. Accepting Ace's death is development. Luffy getting everyone to his side, which is 99% of his character, thats influence. You know what's crazy? We don't judge a person's character this way in real life. Because by this standard, a prison inmate who turned his life around has a better character than a person who has no criminal record. *Because character development.* No. You judge unchanging characters from what others say about him. What he did for others.
To defend Charli a little After 20+ years of reading one piece, Luffy's most prevailing character trait is Stupid and Hungry. Is it true he has other qualities like loyalty, kindness, and empathy, but in all arc Luffy's Stupidity somehow always handicaps him in the first act of every arc just so someone else helps him in the 3rd act.
I think you have to look back at Luffy’s big moments and see that when he switches goober mode off, he’s so fun to watch. Arlong, Crocodile, Rob Lucci; these fights force him to zone in during the fight and realize what is at stake. It’s not just the fights either, it is also when his crew needs him. Throughout the entire series, any time a member of the crew or a future member of the crew is in need, he fights for their freedom. Nami in Arlong Park and Robin in Enies Lobby are the two biggest examples, but they happen more often than you think.
Yeah but he has to turn goober mode off, which means charlie would presumably go back to not enjoying his character until the next time he’s out of goober mode . If you don’t enjoy a character like 60-80% of the time it’s safe to say you don’t like that character
@@boopinoop4545idk man the goober man is still part of luffy's core of freedom and adventure, which pairs along with his serious freedom fighting. I get not liking dumbassery but man hating the whole character for it means something is not being understood
One of the things I’ve always enjoyed about One Piece was the scale of the world Oda built. We aren’t just following Luffy and his crew, people are out and about doing their own thing and making their own moves. It makes the world feel so much more alive. The Ace vs Blackbeard fight was one of my favorite moments. We the audience knew it happened, but Luffy didn’t have a clue. So the tension was immediately raised in the following arcs. Oda just does a fantastic job at world building and making his world constantly feel alive and moving.
Absolutely. This is even more evident if you read the manga and see the little stories that go on in the title cards. Every character we meet truly matters and exists, and that's an amazing aspect of One Piece that I, as a reader of a looot of Shounen Jump, can appreciate
Funny that you mention the rest of the world making their moves and mentioned specifically Ace vs Blackbeard since *spoilers* In the manga we see all of the schemes of Blackbeard coming into fruition right now and the chapter that released just today is about Garp's fight against his commanders (notably Aokiji) to rescue Koby who had been kidnapped
Enies lobby gets kinda good. Sabaody gets absolutely hog wild. In like 5 minutes they introduced all the popular badasses and shit popped off. Sabaody all the way past marineford i watched in like 2 days. The most hype thing ever.
I think Charlie will start liking Luffy a little more when he reaches the Saobody Archipelago arc through to Marineford. I feel like Luffy is a lot less dumb and more focused throughout these arcs compared to when he's just goofing off and having an adventure in the earlier arcs with the crew
That's exactly what I was thinking myself based on what he said he doesn't like about him in this video. I can't really remember myself but I kind of remember myself feeling similar to Charlie, not that I didn't like Luffy but in these early arcs he was basically too strong for what they were fighting so Oda always had to find a way to sideline him to make the arcs longer whcih meant he would fall asleep, get lost, or something like eaten by a snake for half the arc before someone would free him and then the finale would begin. Kind of during and after Thriller Bark I think that starts to change once you're on the Warlords and up enemies. And when you get to the Emperors its almost the opposite where he may come to blows with them early just to show how outclassed he is.
@@JohtoBurglar like charlie said it’s either u like him or don’t. i’ve always liked him but i can understand y people wouldn’t. i think luffys role as captain plays a huge role. like imagine zoro attitude as captain. he plays the right hand man perfectly. plus then when luffy does get serious yk something is wrong

One major flaw with the anime in general is that it was constantly being produced while the manga was being made. There’s no breaks between seasons so that the next manga chapters can finish, which leads to some parts being dragged on for 20 episodes (AKA Luffy in the snake) so that the manga can get ahead of the anime
It speaks to the strength of the story that people actually watch the anime. When I read the manga I get how it’s the most popular manga of all time but I can’t fathom the people who watch the anime.
Its even worse now. They just stretch everything out so much with extra reactions and extra flashy stuff, which really destroys the pace. The anime these days is better to watch the canon clips of good manga moments on yt. You still have to play it on 1.25 speed tho
The manga takes 1/4 - 1/3 of the time to read as the anime, and arcs like skypiea don't suffer from bad pacing and they're great. The anime does surpass the manga on occasion but it's not as good 99% of the time. But it's still great that you're enjoying the story one way or another.
So weird that you committed to 300 episodes before you actually enjoyed it. I read it so my experience was different, but I was gripped from chapter 1 and enjoyed a lot of the East Blue saga. Baratia was the first arc that really got to me continue the series. The Aarlong Park is THE arc that decides if you’ll be a fan of the series.
I can’t imagine a show taking 300 episodes to get good. Like sailor moon is only 300 episodes, One piece took the entirety of sailor moons run to get good
@yamiyugi6031 It's all a matter of subjectivity. Some people like it from the start, some people think it gets good after 100, 300, 800 episodes, or whatever. And some fully catch up and don't like any of it (there are people like that, seriously). I say all this to state that I think that the show is good from the start, and I disagree that it takes that long to get good. It's about taste, perspective, and preference in storytelling. It doesn't have to be for everyone, but you say it like it's a fact that EVERYONE thinks it's bad till Ep.300.
How could broski not think Luffy had character development after Enies Lobby? It's the arc where the crew gets challenged as a crew, not a traveling group of friends, and Luffy get challenged as an actual captain, not some adventurer with childish dreams just wandering around. He made the hard decision of kicking his BEST FRIEND off the crew because his opinions would endanger the safety of everyone else and Luffy's always had incredible empathy while being very blunt about it.
Welcome to the journey 💜 glad you finally started to enjoy it. I had basically the same experience as you took me around 2 years to get to where you at but, as like you did started to enjoy it thoroughly that being said and tbh it’s changed my life. It gets better.
I like Luffy because of the moments when he shows unexpected amount of emotional intelligence. He will see a crewmate in distress and know exactly what to say or do to snap them out of their funk. In Arlong Park with the hat, the way he immediately looks past the parts of Brook and chopper that they think would scare others. "I still haven't heard you say it" to Robin. It shows that beyond his goofiness he is absolutely paying attention to the issues of the people around him.
At the time that Enies Lobby was airing, the anime was dangerously close to catching up to the manga and running out of material to adapt. The studio wanted to keep up the weekly episodes rather than take a break, and that’s why they added those weird filler episodes in the middle of such a climactic moment. That’s also why Luffy was stuck in the snake belly for so long back in Spypeia. The anime really likes to play up Luffy’s lack of awareness for the sake of padding time.
Yeah I always thought of that as well, if it gets too close to the anime then they either have to delay the episodes or do a fullmetal alchemist and go it's own route which is a very heavy gamble and also not the story oda wants
Thats a really weak excuse, if they dont have chapters to adapt, wait... thats the most obvious decision and what most anime do to make it enjoyable, adding filler and dragging shit out for the sole purpose of not wanting to take a break is fucking braindead...
I kinda like how luffy doesnt kill the villains of the arcs because he views crushing your dreams as a worse fate than dying. Similar how zoro was willing to die for his dream on baratie rather than give up on his dream to live.
The author is so childish not letting the villains die. This is why One piece is catered to kids and manchilds because of the notions of “killing is bad” even if used against the villain.
How can you hate luffy after things like giving nami his hat, or “say you want to live” or, the biggest one for me, luffy vs usopp? That was one of the hardest things he’s had to go through as a captain imo.
Tbh i also remember not liking Luffy as a character in the earlier Arcs ,as i usually compared him with other MCs like Naruto,Eren,Asta all were dumb but had something likeable, however after Sabaody, Marineford,Timeskip Luffy really grew a personality his existence his ties to the story and overall plot moving forward made him likeable

@@unironic-Fe-yThere's like dozens of other moments of him caring about his friends. He cared two of them up a long mountain, fought the world government over one and used the power of an afro to rescue another.
The childish nature of Luffy and the humorous moments that occurred in the pre-timeskip arcs are what drew me in. I was hooked since the Arlong Park arc. Seeing Luffy get serious was so rewarding. Once you hopefully catch up, you’ll come to miss these old arcs and the older animation style. There’s also an incredible amount of foreshadowing in the first few arcs that get explained in much later arcs.
I agree, everyone says that it only gets good later but I thought it was great from the start. My hot take is that I think the beginning arcs in the anime are better than what we have currently
Wouldn't say that Arlong Park completely hooked me on the show, but it definitely highlighted the fact that One piece has its serious moments. Wild that seeing Nami's backstory did nothing for Charlie. While it's true that Water 7 is the top or one of the top arcs for the first half of the show, the idea that everything before it is bad is definitely a garbage take.
It's a shame he doesn't like Luffy, Hell I like pre time skip Luffy more than post time skip Luffy because he has so many memorable moments, His fight against Ussop, Him charismatically holding Zoro hostage with either death or freedom at their first encounter. One of Luffy's greatest aspects is his emotional Intelligence, he can always read his crewmates emotions, respecting Ussops duel, Waiting for Nami to ask him for help first during Arlong park, Forcing Robin to say what she actually feels despite her sacrifice, The entirety of his relationship with Sanji during Whole cake island arc. That level of understanding keeps his crew together and boiling down his character to this goofy loudmouth idiot that is practically useless for 10-20 episodes before fighting the big bad is understandable but letting that side of his character affect your perception of what truly makes him a great character and leader is a bit undeserving.
luffy is one of the very few protagonists in anime(and media in general) to consistently rank number 1 in every popularity poll in his series. luffy gets series when needed, and he's much more perceptive than people give him credit for. he subtly develops as time goes on, his battles are extremely interesting to watch, his battle IQ is incredible. luffy just keeps getting better and better. the key to enjoying one piece is honestly just "Patience" expecting instant gratification will not get you anywhere with this show. or just read the manga for the amazing pacing
I think a lot of Luffy's emotional intelligence just makes him seem like an idiot because the Shounen genre and a lot of popular anime in general have the common trait of dense or outright stupid main characters. A lot of Luffy's development as well is seen better in hindsight once you've reached certain points of the story. The first few times where Luffy is being actually smart is easily written off as a coincedence but slowly it begins to add up and you realize who Luffy really is and why he does what he does.
I was hooked by Arlong Park cause how can you not be??? Luffy's enthusiasm is contagious, and that whole arc is just perfect. The scene where Nami's crying and trying to cut her tat off and kicking sand at Luffy but he gives her his hat. GOD DAMN
@@TheWarden04well put, yeah I got into one piece really heavy around baratie when Mihawk shows up. I was in it for the adventure so the lengthbwas exciting for me and the quality and payoff has been huge since specially in terms of the lore and world building that comes together
My biggest complaint is no one dies. I'm even on Egghead Island and everyone who has died that's not in a flashback is less than 5. (that we know of and are not red shirts)
I think it’s worth pointing out that Pel was supposed to die in the explosion, but the chapter of the manga where the bomb goes off came out literally just a few days before 9/11, and so Oda decided having a character die in an explosion was in bad taste, so he basically retconned it so pel survived even though he didn’t have an explanation for how he lived
A character based in a middle-east inspired country, no-less. Its understandable but I wonder if he'd be willing to un-retcon it now that time has passed. Like in a Remastered version
Worst part if OP is they basically have to do one ep a week. The terrible pacing and filler later on really taints the series. Its so refreshing reading the manga and waiting for anime. Just all story
I really think a lot of his complaints about pacing stem from the fact that he’s watching the anime. It drags absolutely everything out, even the punches which you’d tend to imagine as fast from how their depicted in the manga. For example, in Long Ring Long Land they added a whole bunch of extra things that weren’t in the manga, making it like thirty episodes longer than it should’ve been. The manga is just the superior version of the story in my opinion, and I can say this considering that I watched over 200 episodes of the show and dropped it. After that I was told to read it instead, which turned out to be a much better experience. Now it’s one of my favorite pieces of fiction.
That's fair, the manga pacing is like 10x better. That being said towards the latter half of one piece (mainly wano) the fights go harddd, I'd recommend watching those, plus the special moments when they say smth inspirational or emotional or whatever
I agree that the manga is overall superior when it comes to pacing, but I still have one huge gripe with it. Oda's artstyle has severely regressed after the timeskip. Current one piece manga has this awful thick linework with messy ink and the shading is often this weird patchy spiderweb. Panels with nice composition are ruined with a bunch of reaction faces, most likely to give the "1 episode of manga to 1 episode of anime" toei pacing some stuff to padd out the episode runtime. Oda also has a nasty habit of adding pointless clutter to his drawing, like a bunch of "energy lines" flying out when a character throws a punch (and I am not talking about haki here). The characters also have this strange white fade around them to help them stick out from the cluttered background, which again he wouldn't even need to do is he didn't clutter the pages with fuzzy ink. Go and look at the latest chapter and then go check out the first. The difference is night and day and it is not a good improvement.
The pacing wasn’t bad until the time skip. Also ik it’s a sacrilege to say that and I’ve been reading the manga for years now but the anime is better than the manga. You get voice acting, animation, music etc. It’s more fun to follow the anime (until dressrosa)
I can't wait for Charlie to get to Marineford, I 100% understand why he sees Luffy as annoying, so I'm interested in hearing what Charlie has to say once Luffy begins maturing and developing as a character from that arc forward
Luffy’s development is significant but more human and grounded he doesn’t just completely change after something traumatic happens he does learn but he always slips up and it makes his character so much deeper and human than any other in the show
eh not really, he’s still his normal self, but yea he does become a bit more dependable but he is still doing things that gets him and his crew in trouble
@@dblevsTM- it’s actually his crew that gets him in trouble. Like literally any request the crew makes Luffy answers half of it except for the turning back parts and even then it gets out voted.
You simply have to remember. When it was first being made one piece was literally being watched by some if not most of us as KIDS. We basically grew up with this as our childhood anime and it grew alongside us. As a kid i watched one piece as one of my first anime ever with inuyasha and ive seen them grow with the times. Yeah its pretty silly early on and unpolished but as a kid back then i loved it. And its slowly grown into something comparable to my current tastes while not abandoning the original concepts.
i'm sad to hear that it took until Enies Lobby to finally rope you in, but i am delighted to hear that it DID. i was hooked in Arlong Park and a lot of the fans agree with me when i say Nami's Plea is a pivotal moment in the show, but i understand that it's not a show for everyone. either way, huge props to you for actually staying on the ride and legitimately keeping an open mind and waiting to see if the show spoke to you. im glad that it got there eventually! also Enies Lobby has always been my favorite arc and i doubt that will change until our goofy band of misfits finally makes it onto the final island and uncovers the greatest treasure in the world
I absolutely agree with you. To me, arlong parked really pulled me in with the emotions they up in. Before that, all bosses just seemed so boring and weak and I could really acre less about them but then arlong came along and really showed me how satifying it was for luffy to destroy him.
I started watching it recently and the crew have just landed in alabasta. So far I'm enjoying it and zoro, nami and new addition chopper are all great but genuine question, when do luffy and usopp get more fleshed out? so far I'm with Charlie that Luffy is BY FAR my least favourite character. He seemed more intelligent and emotionally mature as a child in his flashback then he does currently and his "always on" stupidity really takes away any tension the show tries to build if Luffy is in the scene. I enjoyed Usopps introduction and his compulsive lying to make others feel better and liven up his town was a neat switch-up on an otherwise negative characteristic but there has been so many moments already where it feels like he's resolved himself and is going to change and make more of an effort and then next episode he immediately reverts back. I plan on continuing the show egardless but I'd mostly like to know if this is something I'm gonna have to deal with throughout or if they actually have a character arc and become more likable people with more nuance to their character, especially Luffy who right now is just "hehe im stupid, I like meat and am stupidly strong" on NON STOP REPEAT. Hell Goku was dense but he was never as outright stupid like Luffy is sometimes which is saying something lmao.
@@reindogfan that's entirely fair honestly, I can see how Luffy looks one-dimensional early on. I would argue that very soon after Alabasta Luffy begins to realize that he has to take his journey much more seriously, as the main villain of Alabasta kinda fucks him up a bit 😂 As for Usopp, he has a much more hidden growth that's hard to see unless you really pay attention to who he is as a character. I don't want to say anything else because parts of it are pretty solid spoilers but I hope you enjoy the rest of your journey!
One Piece always had me from the start, personally (episode 1). It's not for everyone, but the main "hook" was "The Walk" from Arlong Park for me, where I saw just what this series was capable of, and then Water 7 was the moment One Piece reached true elevation for me. Glad to see Charlie's found his moment, even if it did take longer than expected.
Yeah a lot of His complaints about no stakes luffys character and no one getting killed off his reaction once he makes the time skip I look forward to it
Luffys development after enies lobby was a more important one imo, post marineford luffy learned he needed to be stronger, and found out the true scope of the world and how much stronger he needed to become, but enies lobby/water 7 taught luffy that he has responsibilities, being strong and beating up the strongest guy can’t solve everything, he needed to become someone they cud follow without hesitation, someone who would be their guide, which imo is the most important for luffy as his role as captain on his ship, which I think critikal majorly looks over in his watching of the series
@@K1_Trains I have serious doubts he'll be able to get through the Paramount War. He despises Luffy cause he can't stand his carefree and dense personality and there's literally like 200 episodes of just following Luffy by himself
When I first watched One Piece I had the same sentiments, but now at episode 1069 and after reading the manga I really do appreciate the earlier episodes a lot more now
It took me like 3 years to get past episode 100, but now im nearly 600 deep this year alone (thanks one pace). It generally takes a lot for me to physically react to any movie/tv show, but I've cried and jumped for joy so many times over the last few months, amazing show
@@sasagrcevic475 bro emotional intelligence is the understanding and awareness of your own emotions and the emotions of others, that is exactly what luffy is capable of we've seen this especially when it comes to his crew
Water 7 is definitely a turning point for people that don't enjoy one piece initially. Most of my friends who've started it definitely had a change in attitude during water 7 and marineford.
yeah those arcs are goated, i kinda went through the same experience, except i was enjoying it, but not ALOT, idek how i binged like 30+ eps every day even though it wasn't THAT good, def a turning point around water 7 One piece is def top 3 for me, the thing that ruins it for me is obviously pacing (manga pacing is fine tbh) and the fact that the start really didnt get me fully commited on watching it, watching the first 60 eps felt like a drag (they were not bad, just not that enjoyable) , and a bunch of other small stuff that is very subjective. i like other animes more, but one piece will definitely stay up there
It’s unfortunate it took you that long to enjoy one piece but I understand. Personally I enjoyed it from the beginning and like the character interactions and found the humor funny. After being caught up I thought back and appreciated the earlier stages of one piece how it was less serious and had more crew interaction. The story overall is amazing and the later arcs get so much better.
Seriously, i was skeptical before starting it. But the pre time skip humor and drama especially before the grand line instantly clicks with me, post time skip is great but lacks a certain charm for me, but the fights and animations definitely improved by lots.
Personally I find arcs too long for nothing. I still read until the end of wano arc but seriously so dam long. That's why I prefer nowadays mangas better except if they ( old mangas ) are really good. Like I kind of liked DBZ and Naruto. Bleach, OPM are prob my fav. Not counting isekai I read since a lot of them are shit compared to these shows. But One Piece, meh. Just my opinion. I have a friend who watch the anime and it's the only anime he watches. One of my teacher too and I still respect them. But ain't no way I would be able to watch the whole thing. The pacing is soooo slow.
if the pacing is an issue, look into the one pace project, its a fanmade project that has cut it down from about 1000 episodes to about 400, and cuts the majority of the filler
I've heard there's a community project called One Pace who strive to make the episodes concise and remove every unnecessary filler episodes and over all makes it more enjoyable to watch. Because it's true that the filler stuff in the Anime can get annoying especially the ones between arcs that aren't even in the original manga. I'm glad something like One Pace exists at least.
One pace is good to a certain extent, but it also cuts down some important scenes, like dressrosa when you-know-who meets up w luffy and he cries cause he thought he was dead. That scene is just a slideshow on one pace which is a crime.
Yes, and Enies Lobby is actually the perfect place to jump into One Pace because they've completely finished every arc from then on except Wano (because it's still airing). I can't recommend One Pace enough, seriously. Especially in Dressrosa.
I've felt that the Arlong Park Arc (Manga vols. 8-11, anime episodes 31-45) tends to be the best litmus test on if someone would like One Piece or not. If it doesn't hook someone, it's very unlikely the other 1,000+ episodes will.
I think it did hook him in the moment. His problem is that he was consuming it way too slowly. Watching a show over two years, especially one with poor pacing, means you're gonna forget A LOT. Which isn't 100% his fault but he still hasn't acknowledged that. For example, he says certain characters hadn't had development till now which is false when talking about every crew member. Luffy's intellect does change a little but that's not what's being developed. It's his leadership skills.
@@KagariAsuhait's good before Arlong Park, that's just the best that's "early", so if someone doesn't seem to like One Piece and then doesn't like Arlong Park then they probably won't like the rest of the show.
I think the complaints about Luffy are valid, but I think it's more understandable when you know his motivation. Luffy essentially just wants to have fun and go on an adventure. It's why he doesn't bat an eye when Buggy is about to chop his head off. It's why he doesn't go out of his way to kill the villains. Luffy just wants to be free and go on adventures with his friends. One thing i think is easy to miss is how he so readily and fully believes in his friends' dreams no matter how ridiculous. Nami and Sanji for example almost always get laughed at even by their closest friends for having ridiculous goals, but Luffy just believes them right away. To him it's just a matter of fact that they'll one day achieve their dreams even if everyone else would say otherwise. All his crew in turn trust him completely as well. It's his power to bring people together and make them believe in each other so completely that makes him a good protagonist imo.
@@EthanP. I think it entirely depends, part of Luffy's charm is that he's silly, goofy, stupid, but gets serious when he actually needs to. It's a bit like Goku but even more stupid and silly. People either really like that or really dislike that. Most One Piece fans have Luffy in top3 because they either liked him from the beginning or watched enough for Luffy to have fights that make you really like him because of the fights and eventually fell in love with his charm as well. People who don't have Luffy in their top3 normally just didn't put in the time because an unenjoyable MC is normally a motivation for people to drop a series and if they dropped it then they can't really be called a "one piece fan" because they watched 20 episodes and decided the annoying MC is too annoying and they cba to watch a show with an annoying MC.

My half-brother has been watching this show since 2009, and he has completed the show around ten times. I didn't believe that mf until he told me every detail of every episode. Absolutely crazy.
It's so cool to hear people's experiences with the show, I personally loved it from episode 1 and I really got invested during Arlong Park arc. I think it was such a great way to show how Luffy has some solid morals even if he's a goof, and showed a very complex side of Nami as well. I have the best memories watching this show and especially the earlier seasons. I know the anime likes to take it's time, but I skipped over the filler especially after the time skip. Some early filler was really good though. If you're looking for a show that will have devastating consequences, this isn't it, but it'll make you feel good and happy inside, which I think we all need form time to time ahaha.
Arlong park was goated but then the show gets so boring for about 50 episodes imo, I’ll always prefer Naruto and like Charlie said having a MC like Luffy can ruin the whole series, I prefer Sasuke but still Naruto is a goated MC and he makes the show worth watching same as Ichigo
@@jasonpetrillo7716 I think it comes down to personal taste too because I really like Luffy. I don't mind him being goofy most of the time cause Nami brings that seriousness and logical side to it. In a way she's more the captain than he is ahaha.

There are so many times in this video where I just think, ‘wait till you get to marineford’, such as when he says that no one dies, or that luffy has nothing to his character
*Spoiler for Marine Ford* In Marine Ford are just 2 Major Deaths, for a war Arc this not much(plus maybe Little Oars Junior, his status reads as unknown, which is ridiculous). There are virtually no deaths from all the other parties including John Giant who took the massive punch from Whitebeard. Especially that no high ranked/named marine died is ludacris.
Yeah I watched one piece up to whole cake and I caught up, then I’ve been reading since and have re read the manga many times it’s pacing is 20 times better than the anime
Luffys tenacity is what makes him a legend to me, idk how you can watch his fights with arlong, crocodile and Rob Lucci and still just boil him down to some stupid guy. He feels genuine anger on behalf of the oppressed, he sheds tears for his friends gets the shit beaten out of him putting his life on the line for others. He does often put them in a difficult situation, but because his intentions are always to help the oppressed, those people end up joining his side and balancing the scales, resulting in a super satisfying victory after a steep and tenacious uphill climb.
Yeah seeing luffy fight with ussop and turn his back while crying after beating him hit me. Charlie wasn’t watching one piece he was watching two halves
Him shitting on skypiea luffy actually hurt my soul because that arc is what made luffy a legend for me The entire arc was built around luffy wanting to prove that the sky island exists, that being said we get to watch luffy just explore and have a goofy fuck around of a time on AN ISLAND IN THE SKY THAT WE NOW KNOW DOES EXIST and all the while he is slowly putting together what’s going on around the island, it takes such a long time to build up that you start to think “wow this luffy guy is really just fucking off around this arc” and then you get to the climax of his enel fight and all of a sudden you realize that THE ENTIRE TIME LUFFY WAS FUCKING AROUND ON THIS ISLAND HE ONLY HAD ONE GOAL SHOOTING THROUGH HIS MIND AND IT WAS TO RING THAT FUCKING BELL DUDE LITERALLY TUNNEL VISIONED AN ENTIRE ARC JUST TO PROVE TO A GUY HE KNEW FOR TWO DAYS THAT THERE REALLY WAS SOMETHING UP THERE AND HIS LIFES WORK WASNT FOR NOTHING it’s just such a grand beautiful payoff, and that’s when I realized luffy wasn’t dumb, he just goes with the flow with only one singular goal in mind and he doesn’t stop until that goal is achieved regardless of everything that gets in his way because he’s just a pirate on his own journey. Skypiea luffy changed the entire game for me and his tunnel vision has held strong through the entire manga and I CANT wait to see the inevitable end. Wish Charlie could see the in between where luffy secretly knows what he wants in every arc and accomplishes it 99% of the time
I still really dislike the giant asspull oda pulled out for the end of the kaido fight. And people try to Always cherry pick Something to make some theories how Something was foreshadowed 3 million years ago. The worst part about one piece are always the fans. Especially the extreme fanatics.
Thisbis basically my one piece journey also. I started watching after Christmas 2023 and have been fully caught up for a few months. One of the weirdest most enjoyable odd shows ever.
@@ulrald8864 I have teared up a few times across a handful of anime, outside of that the only other type of media that has made me get the sniffles. Was the one scene in 'I am legend' where will smith has to strangle his dog to death. But outside of that no other movie, show, or game has done it.
Honestly Robins whole story is one of the best/saddest next to Sanjis. Her best friend telling her "No ones born to be alone" speech while him and everyone she knows dies around her by the world government hits me HARD even know I get goosebumps... one of the best speech's in the show so far.
@@felixgutierrez993 It hits close for me. I bounced around in foster homes until a wonderful family took me in. I know how it feels to be rejected by everyone until finally someone accepts you.
@@DJ-sn2wn it’s that situation of “expecting the characters to always be smart in anime” when the whole cast of characters are for the most part not really smart at all, they are just human, which makes One Piece so relatable
As a guy who picked up one piece out of boredom, I’m really glad to hear you’re enjoying it! One Piece is one of those animes that have gripped my heart by the aorta and haven’t let go. You’ve seen One Piece pre-time skip at its best, and it only gets better the further you get. I’m happy to hear you like it man, keep it up!
Fishman Island was painful to watch after perhaps the greatest arc regarded by many but yeah post-time skip luckily picks up again at Punk Hazard one of my top 5 arcs IMO its underrated, I love the way it builds it all up to Dressrossa but that suffered from pacing it felt like it took forever with all the filler but once you reach Zou/Whole cake I felt that hype again I got from watching Water 7/Ennies Lobby for the first time. Haven't watched Wano yet so can't really form a full opinion on the whole show so far.
Luffy starts getting more serious whenever the situation is serious. I understand why you don't like him but I genuinely love his character, he is a good blend of serious and happy. He's the embodiment of happiness.
@@adam-lu4vr I kind of get him because I feel the same way towards goku in db super. He's way too immature and doesn't take anything seriously 90% of the time.
Luffy's personality is a hold over from all the other main protagonists of the time when the manga was originally written. A lot of Shonen anime had the dumb happy go lucky protagonist that loved to eat is just that now a days all those manga stopped and the only big characters that are still like that are Goku and Luffy. Times have definitely changed
Water 7 is the point where One Piece hits different is because that’s when the straw hat crew truly feels like they earned the title of pirate. It’s a lovely story. I love one piece… it’s worth the journey, especially right now.
When I started I didn't like it either but I think today is harder to engage with OP... when I started (in 2010 I think) We were used to slow and long animes (like Naruto or HunterxHunter) and we knew that to get to the good stuff we had to endure. Today that concept no longer exists, productions aim for immediate impact so it's very difficult for someone to cach on with OP. In addition, Toei speculated a lot with fillers, frozen frames and minimum payment to animators to also reach the pace of the manga. Hopefully the Netflix remake will try to cover that generational gap
Just a note about Pell being alive. When Oda was drawing that part back then, the 11 september just happen. So was his decision to not kill that character in a bomb explosion.
It would be okay if one or two characters survive situations like that, but One Piece is so afraid of killing characters, that you can never be sure of a character being dead even when they die for real.
I highly recommend reading if pacing is your main issue. A lot of the pacing is just much better in the manga, although skypia and fishman island still moved a little slow for me
For those that don't enjoy manga, I recommend googling One Pace. It's a fan edit of the anime that follows the events of the manga to a tee which makes the pacing much more bearable.
I just got to Fishman Island in the anime and I really don't know why but holy hell it's HARD to get through. Last time I felt like this was Syrup Village
Yeah, seeing this makes me think he would have had such a better experience with either One Pace or just reading the manga. Most manga mega-fans can’t even watch the anime.
First 500 so episodes are goofy and more focused on the adventure and the shenanigans in each arc. But after a certian event, it gets serious as the stakes are higher and the arcs are more focused on the story of one piece going further rather than limited to the arc itself.
Oda might not like killing off his characters, but when he does… it’s truly something special. So not having many deaths in the story makes the deaths that do happen much more emotional.
@@asoleieifretton7578 yeah, its REALLY hard for people to not know Ace dies before he dies these days. It's posted so often on every related One Piece, pretty much any OP Forum has decided that things are not spoilers unless it hasnt been animated yet.
Special my ass. Nothing is shocking about one piece‘s death scenes. Until now only WB and Ace died who we have seen basically nothing about. I mean the flash back came right after ace died which was the dumbest decision ever. We should know the characters first before they get killed off. Also in over 1000 episodes only 2 characters died and that in the same arc. And you call that special?
I'm actually watching this with my little sister, and we're almost at water 7 so its kinda nice to see Charlie's around there too. In my opinion, I was on board with the show since episode 1 but Arlong Park made me a fan. The whole One Piece doesn't kill people is a valid point but the stories that it tells for not only its main characters but also its side ones make it amazing. Even the backstory of some random guard dog from the buggy arc near the beginning of the show was so beautiful that it makes you root and worry for them despite knowing that they probably won't die. When a show can keep you engaged and invested into even the most irrelevant of characters without the risk of death. That's the sign of a good show.
Personally imo I don't see why people think the only stakes a work of fiction can have is someone dying. The entire central theme revolves around dreams, and Oda has gone on record to say Luffy doesn't fight to kill but to crush the villains dreams that harm others. Idk, it's a weird thing for people to get hung up on.
@can_can9119 I agree 100%. Also even if they don't die, the villains like arlong and crocodile are beaten so badly that their lives and goals are fundamentally destroyed, practically killing them off in the sense of purpose rather than in a traditional literal sense. To me, that's more poetic and gives greater stakes as whether they are defeated determines the lives of the islands and world around them. If arlong hadn't been defeated, cocoyashi village would forever be extorted and east blue would pretty much belong to arlong. And if crocodile hadn't been defeated, the people of alabasta mostly would've died from civil war or dehydration. Just cause the main characters/villains lives aren't necessarily at stake cause of plot armor doesn't mean that a battle doesn't have tremendous stakes in the world as a whole.
@@can_can9119for the part about the main characters having dreams, so they can’t die in the story, I agree with. Which is why I think Usopp will die at the end
@@potatogaming7044 I didn't necessarily mean the main characters but the series as a whole. Oda has said that for characters their dreams are more important to them than life itself. He's trying to hammer home the idea that crushing the villains dreams, and them being forced to live with the fact they'll never accomplish what they set out to achieve is tantamount to death. People can like that or hate it, completely subjective but imo it's perfect for a story that revolves around dreams and the means people will go through to achieve it, no matter who it hurts. I can understand why people wouldn't like that approach in a shonen though.
There's a couple times where the anime was too close to the manga, causing the studio to have to fill some weeks with filler episodes. Dressrosa is the prime example of this where we see luffy ace and sabo exchange a cup of sake like 30 times
One thing i love about this show is how you don't actually follow the story from the beginning, You follow the crew as they insert themselves in the story that was ongoing without them.
And the so called story that was going without them has prophecies about your chosen one into being in the story before he was even in the story. So you don't actually love the story of One Piece for that reason, you just wanted to write anything that sounds good to ears
@@hydrocy.9165 Luffy isn't chosen because he was born that way. He is chosen because the world needs someone like him. Someone who embodies freedom. Because you need the personification of freedom to take down the personification of oppression

Im on the same boat as you, charlie. It took me about 6 years of dropping it and coming back to finally get to water 7/enies lobby. Now im loving it, at around ep 540 of the anime. As a fair warning, thriller bark is kinda slow, but the arcs right after it are gold. Good luck and may we all catch up and watch the finale eventually.

@@bendybill5529 I can boutch for it, I saw it with my feyonce and she loved it and for myself, in general, it was a lovely experience. I 100 times rather jump the amazing G8 arc watching One Pace than going trough the slug fest of Dressrosa and some stretch out parts of Wano from the original cut.
I genuinely think you'll like Luffy later on. He kind of losses that nonchalant attitude, or at least it's shown less. The plot will also change from individual arc plots, to incorporating different peices from every plot to strengthen the overall plot line.
I had the EXACT same experience. Everyone I know that I respect their opinions said One Piece is the best story ever told. I tried 4 times to start the anime, would get frustrated or fall asleep (wishing I could somehow catch up in my sleep lol). Made it a handful of episodes and gave up. Eventually I grinded it out while doing art and watching it in the background. By the time Alabasta finishes it stopped feeling like a grind and I started liking it. After Water 7 I started loving it. Im at Whole Cake now and obsessed. I cannot believe something so perfect exists. The more the back stories flesh out and more world building threads are tossed into the mix and more emotional scenes happen it becomes something that no one can deny. Its literally a masterpiece of story telling and yes even the beginning was necessary. You grow along WITH the characters. The SHOW itself matures while the characters do. And Luffy, for all his goofiness eventually becomes insanely beloved. Even though he IS stupid, his heart and passion intensifies and the fact that everywhere he goes people are flabbergasted with his child-like reckless abandon and his selfless defense of the down trodden and his ability to trust in “humanity” while everyone else has been so broken by the cruelty of the world and they cant help but admire someone like that and wholeheartedly believe he WILL BE THE PIRATE KING.
If I ever wanna get into One Piece myself, I'll probably just stick with that for the sake of my sanity. Maybe watch a few select episodes afterwards of any story arcs I enjoy.
@@chimerschang personally I feel like its not worth watching select episodes. its long for a reason and id even say most of the filler ive seen so far does add to the story in meaningful ways. i get alot of people just dont want to read manga for multiple valid reasons but in most cases it is the best way to experience the story of an anime that interests you

@lesten2707 seeing him repeatedly getting his A** beat for his friends and just what lengths he will go to for his friends adds a lot and makes you respect him more.
Wait til he watches usopp go backwards as a character in wano lmao he's gonna be pissed
Not even that far in the series in arlong park, pay attention to how he treats nami before he marches to the fight

To defend Charli a little
After 20+ years of reading one piece, Luffy's most prevailing character trait is Stupid and Hungry.

The Ace vs Blackbeard fight was one of my favorite moments. We the audience knew it happened, but Luffy didn’t have a clue. So the tension was immediately raised in the following arcs. Oda just does a fantastic job at world building and making his world constantly feel alive and moving.
Facts I love how the world moves on without the main characters
Absolutely. This is even more evident if you read the manga and see the little stories that go on in the title cards. Every character we meet truly matters and exists, and that's an amazing aspect of One Piece that I, as a reader of a looot of Shounen Jump, can appreciate

I think Charlie will start liking Luffy a little more when he reaches the Saobody Archipelago arc through to Marineford. I feel like Luffy is a lot less dumb and more focused throughout these arcs compared to when he's just goofing off and having an adventure in the earlier arcs with the crew
@@jacobzukaitis2995spoiler

The manga takes 1/4 - 1/3 of the time to read as the anime, and arcs like skypiea don't suffer from bad pacing and they're great. The anime does surpass the manga on occasion but it's not as good 99% of the time. But it's still great that you're enjoying the story one way or another.

@@IrisBread yeah the pacing for the anime is pretty bad but the story is definitely good aside from that
@@IrisBreadsoo true 😢
I try to keep up with the manga but I still don't like it and it drags for me.
From what I’ve seen, the anime’s pacing only gets worse, especially after the timeskip.

Nahhhh. i didnt like arlong park too much but i still love one piece
@@IWantToStayAtYourHousei dont kno why you didnt along but that's what got hooked me completely.
Not trying to be rude but, as a non-fan, if a series takes 8-11 volumes of manga to get hooked, I think that’s a major failure on the writer’s part.
@@KagariAsuhait's good before Arlong Park, that's just the best that's "early", so if someone doesn't seem to like One Piece and then doesn't like Arlong Park then they probably won't like the rest of the show.
There’s always enough space in the crew for u Charlie. U a real one 😎
It's his power to bring people together and make them believe in each other so completely that makes him a good protagonist imo.
i disagree. most one piece fans have luffy in their top 3 characters, i personally think hes one of the best shonen protags

I think it was such a great way to show how Luffy has some solid morals even if he's a goof, and showed a very complex side of Nami as well. I have the best memories watching this show and especially the earlier seasons. I know the anime likes to take it's time, but I skipped over the filler especially after the time skip. There are so many times in this video where I just think, ‘wait till you get to marineford’, such as when he says that no one dies, or that luffy has nothing to his character

Him shitting on skypiea luffy actually hurt my soul because that arc is what made luffy a legend for me
The entire arc was built around luffy wanting to prove that the sky island exists, that being said we get to watch luffy just explore and have a goofy fuck around of a time on AN ISLAND IN THE SKY THAT WE NOW KNOW DOES EXIST and all the while he is slowly putting together what’s going on around the island, it takes such a long time to build up that you start to think “wow this luffy guy is really just fucking off around this arc” and then you get to the climax of his enel fight and all of a sudden you realize that THE ENTIRE TIME LUFFY WAS FUCKING AROUND ON THIS ISLAND HE ONLY HAD ONE GOAL SHOOTING THROUGH HIS MIND AND IT WAS TO RING THAT FUCKING BELL
DUDE LITERALLY TUNNEL VISIONED AN ENTIRE ARC JUST TO PROVE TO A GUY HE KNEW FOR TWO DAYS THAT THERE REALLY WAS SOMETHING UP THERE AND HIS LIFES WORK WASNT FOR NOTHING
it’s just such a grand beautiful payoff, and that’s when I realized luffy wasn’t dumb, he just goes with the flow with only one singular goal in mind and he doesn’t stop until that goal is achieved regardless of everything that gets in his way because he’s just a pirate on his own journey. Skypiea luffy changed the entire game for me and his tunnel vision has held strong through the entire manga and I CANT wait to see the inevitable end.
Wish Charlie could see the in between where luffy secretly knows what he wants in every arc and accomplishes it 99% of the time

It really doesn’t. Most of post time skip is torture to watch…
A lot of Shonen anime had the dumb happy go lucky protagonist that loved to eat is just that now a days all those manga stopped and the only big characters that are still like that are Goku and Luffy. Times have definitely changed
I call it embodiment of stupidity
Water 7 is the point where One Piece hits different is because that’s when the straw hat crew truly feels like they earned the title of pirate. It’s a lovely story. I love one piece… it’s worth the journey, especially right now.
I agree. Water 7 and Enies Lobby are my favorite arcs.
not to mention FRANKY
Well when people ask when u normaly get hooked to op its
-> ep1 , arlong , water 7
fishman island, punk hazard and the first half of dressrosa are absolute dog ass
true after wano the manga is crazy it's at it's peak
When I started I didn't like it either but I think today is harder to engage with OP... when I started (in 2010 I think) We were used to slow and long animes (like Naruto or HunterxHunter) and we knew that to get to the good stuff we had to endure. Today that concept no longer exists, productions aim for immediate impact so it's very difficult for someone to cach on with OP. In addition, Toei speculated a lot with fillers, frozen frames and minimum payment to animators to also reach the pace of the manga. Hopefully the Netflix remake will try to cover that generational gap
As a person who loves one piece I see this as an absolute win

That’s kind of funny
It’s completely unconfirmed
Wait i thought that was the sky island guy who died on the september 11
This reach is longer than Luffy using his powers.

No spoilers, but let me just say that things start to really pick up in the Water 7 arc
Robin's back story is very important to the story because it shows how corrupt the navy is, and it also shows how she's important to the story
